Bristova Beach – A Tranquil Cove and Bogomolje Harbour on the Northern Coast of Hvar
Bristova Beach is situated in a deeply recessed cove on the northern side of eastern Hvar, a few kilometres below Bogomolje. Unlike many small coves in this part of the island that can only be reached by dirt roads or by boat, Bristova is accessible by car via a local road, making it one of the more practical options for swimming in the vicinity of Bogomolje.
At the end of the cove, there are smaller pebbly areas suitable for swimming, a few houses and apartments, while the eastern side is developed as a harbour. Bristova is, in fact, the traditional harbour of Bogomolje, where a small beach, local moorings, and a calm anchorage coexist.
There is no typical tourist centre, beach bars, or large developed beach. The main reasons to visit are the clear waters, tranquillity, easier road access, and the natural surroundings of the northern coast of Hvar.
Bristova – The Old Harbour of Bogomolje
Bristova is not just a beach.
It is a harbour for Bogomolje, which has served as the settlement's outlet to the sea for centuries. Bogomolje is located inland, approximately two kilometres from the coast and about 250 metres above sea level, so the surrounding coves have always had a significant connection to fishing, boats, and transport.
A jetty was built in Bristova in 1911, and the current spatial plan of the Municipality of Sućuraj designates it as a harbour open to local traffic.
This means the cove appears somewhat different from the completely natural neighbouring coves. On one side, there are moorings and a concreted shoreline, while the more natural pebbly areas further from the harbour section are used for swimming.
Pebble Beach at the Bottom of the Cove
The most pleasant swimming area is the inner part of Bristova.
The shoreline is predominantly pebbly and rocky, with smaller beaches between houses and natural parts of the coast. The pebbles are typical for this part of Hvar, making entry into the sea easier than from the rocky sections of the coast.
The seabed in most of the cove transitions to sand, which is evidenced by its long-standing use as an anchorage. Due to the sandy bottom, the water in the shallower areas takes on lighter blue and green hues on sunny days.
However, one should not expect a wide sandy beach. It is most accurate to describe Bristova as a small pebble beach in a cove with a sandy seabed.
Entry into the Sea and Depth
Entry into the sea from the pebbly areas is generally easy.
In the inner part of the cove, the depth increases gradually compared to the open rocky shores, making Bristova pleasant for relaxed swimming and suitable for families with children who can enter the water independently.
Near the harbour, care should be taken with small boats and local maritime traffic. Therefore, it is better to choose a part of the cove that is away from the moorings and the concreted operational shoreline for swimming.
If visiting with small children, the pebbly end of the cove is much more practical than the area near the jetty.
A Quiet Cove Without Large Tourist Crowds
Bristova is more developed than Vela Pogorila or some completely wild coves of Bogomolje, yet it still lacks the character of a typical tourist destination.
Along the coast, there are a few houses and apartments, while the surrounding area is dominated by Mediterranean vegetation and rocky slopes.
This gives the cove a good balance: it is not completely isolated and hard to reach, but neither is it overcrowded with tourist infrastructure.
It is most suited to guests who wish to spend a few hours by the sea without music from beach bars, queues for sun loungers, or a large concentration of bathers.
Natural Shade
Along part of the beach and houses, Mediterranean greenery grows, but the amount of natural shade depends on the location and time of day.
One should not expect a large continuous belt of dense pine forest immediately above the entire beach.
For a full day’s stay during the summer months, it is advisable to bring a sunshade or other sun protection.
Due to its northern orientation, certain parts of the cove remain without direct sunlight earlier in the afternoon, which can be very pleasant during the hottest hours.
How to Reach Bristova
Bristova can be reached from Bogomolje by car.
From the settlement, a local road descends towards the northern coast. Road access is one of the significant advantages of Bristova compared to the surrounding coves.
The drive is short, but the road descends from the interior of the island to sea level, so it is advisable to drive cautiously, especially on narrower sections.
Bristova is therefore well-suited for guests who wish to explore the beaches around Bogomolje but do not want to drive long dirt roads every day.
Parking
There is no large organised public parking area in the cove intended for a significant number of daily visitors.
Houses and apartments have their own parking spaces, but these are private and should not be used without permission.
For a day visit, it is necessary to find a suitable spot along the local road or an area where the car will not block passage, access to houses, or harbour traffic.
Due to limited space during July and August, it is wise to arrive a bit earlier.
No Typical Beach Facilities
Bristova is not an organised municipal beach.
At the beach itself, one should not expect public showers, toilets, sunbed rentals, or a large beach bar. A few accommodation establishments are located right by the sea, but their amenities are intended for their guests.
The nearest basic services and shops are towards Bogomolje, so for a longer stay, it is advisable to bring water and everything needed for a day at the beach.
This is particularly important if planning to stay for several hours with children.
Bristova as an Anchorage
The cove is also interesting for guests arriving by boat.
Due to its shape, it is well protected from southern and western winds. Anchoring is possible at depths of approximately 2 to 10 metres, and the sandy bottom generally holds the anchor well.
On the eastern side, there is a concreted shore with moorings, where the depth is approximately two metres.
However, Bristova should also be viewed as an active local harbour, so when anchoring and swimming, it is essential to leave space for boats and respect the harbour infrastructure.
In stronger northern winds, conditions can be significantly less favourable than in southern winds.
Bristova or Vela Pogorila?
When choosing between the two coves, the difference lies primarily in character.
Bristova has better road access, more houses by the sea, a harbour, and serves as a local port. It is more practical if one wishes to arrive easily by car and spend a few hours swimming.
Vela Pogorila is more natural and secluded, but access is more challenging, and the cove has even less infrastructure.
For a family or a guest for whom ease of access is important, Bristova is the more practical choice. For a completely secluded feel and less developed coastline, Vela Pogorila has the advantage.
A Good Starting Point for Exploring the Bogomolje Coast
Bristova is just one of many coves around Bogomolje.
To the east are Vela and Mala Pogorila and other smaller coves, while to the west are Zavala, Solotiša, and Gačice.
This makes the area particularly worthwhile for guests staying several days and wishing to try a different swimming spot each day.
There is no need to rush through all the coves in one day. In this part of Hvar, it is much more pleasant to choose one, bring food and water, and stay for several hours.
Who Will Enjoy Bristova Beach the Most?
Bristova is a good choice for guests who want a quiet beach but do not want a complicated access.
It suits couples, families, guests staying in Bogomolje, and sailors looking for a sheltered cove with anchoring and mooring options.
It is not ideal for those seeking a completely wild coastline without houses and boats, nor for guests who require beach bars, sunbeds, and complete infrastructure.
It is best experienced as a small Bogomolje harbour with a pebble bathing area, clear waters, and a peaceful island atmosphere.
