Sveti Nikola Peak – The Highest Peak of Hvar Island with a Chapel, Large Cross, and Spectacular Views of the Adriatic
Sveti Nikola is the highest peak of Hvar Island, located at an elevation of 626 meters above sea level, high above Sveta Nedjelja and the steep vineyard slopes of the southern coast. At the summit, there is a small stone chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, a large stone cross, and a fire lookout tower, offering views that encompass much of Hvar, the surrounding islands, and the open Adriatic Sea. This is one of the best locations on the island for panoramic photography, hiking, and experiencing a completely different mountainous landscape of Hvar.
Unlike the coastal areas known for their beaches and vibrant promenades, Sveti Nikola reveals a more rugged side of the island. Here, limestone rocks, low Mediterranean vegetation, and rocky ridges steeply descend towards the sea to the south. Hiking trails lead to the summit from Sveta Nedjelja, Dola, and Svirč, and there is also an option to approach by car via a dirt road from the northern side of the island.
Views from the Highest Peak of Hvar – From Brač and Vis to Korčula
The main attraction of Sveti Nikola is the view from the summit ridge. To the north, there is a panorama of the interior of Hvar Island, the Stari Grad Plain, and Brač with Vidova Gora, while to the south, the view drops almost vertically towards Sveta Nedjelja and the deep blue sea.
On clear days, the islands of Vis and Korčula are clearly visible, and the view extends to other Dalmatian islands and the mainland coast. Due to its position at the highest part of the southern island ridge, Sveti Nikola offers one of the widest views in this part of the Adriatic.
The contrast between the calmer, greener interior of Hvar and the steep cliffs on the southern side is particularly striking. From the summit, it is easy to understand why settlements like Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac are so isolated from the central part of the island.
For photography, early morning and late afternoon are especially beautiful, when the light is softer, and the relief of the rocky slopes is highlighted. Due to its exposed position at the top, stronger winds often blow here than along the coast.
The Chapel of St. Nicholas and the Large Stone Cross
At the rocky summit, there is a small chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, one of the most revered saints in the Dalmatian maritime tradition. The chapel is mentioned in historical records as early as 1495, indicating the long religious significance of this site.
Built of stone, it has a simple shape that blends into the bare summit landscape. Next to it stands a large stone cross, one of the most recognizable features of Sveti Nikola and a common subject for hikers' photographs.
There is also a fire lookout tower at the summit. Sveti Nikola is an important point for monitoring forest fires, as it provides a view over a large part of the island.
The chapel can be viewed from the outside, but one should not expect regular access to the interior. Surrounding the chapel and the cross are rocky surfaces offering panoramic views, but caution is necessary when approaching the edges of the cliffs due to the steep drops.
Ascent from Sveta Nedjelja – The Shortest but Steepest Trail
Sveta Nedjelja is one of the most interesting starting points for the ascent to Sveti Nikola. From the settlement, the hiking trail climbs almost directly towards the high ridge that dominates above the houses and vineyards.
The trail passes through rocky terrain and Mediterranean vegetation, and during the ascent, there is the well-known Sveta Nedjelja Cave with the remains of an Augustinian monastery and the church of Our Lady of Snow. This is an interesting separate attraction and a good opportunity for a shorter excursion for those who do not wish to continue all the way to the summit.
The hike from Sveta Nedjelja to Sveti Nikola takes approximately one and a half hours of ascent, according to hiking data. This is the shortest but also the steepest of the main approaches to the peak.
In some sections, the ascent is particularly rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are a much better choice than regular sneakers or summer footwear. Due to the significant elevation gain and lack of shade in exposed areas, this trail is not recommended for inexperienced hikers during the hottest summer months.
Hiking Trails from Dola and Svirč
For hikers seeking a more gradual approach to Sveti Nikola, trails from the northern side of the island are of interest.
From Dola, near Stari Grad, a well-known hiking route leads to the peak. The ascent takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The trail passes through the interior of Hvar, where traditional agricultural landscapes, dry stone walls, Mediterranean vegetation, and rocky mountain areas alternate.
From Svirč, there is also a marked hiking trail, which takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes of ascent. This approach is particularly interesting for guests staying in Jelsa, Vrboska, and nearby areas.
Both routes require appropriate footwear, sufficient water, and basic fitness. Although Sveti Nikola is not a high mountain in the continental sense, the rocky terrain and strong summer sun can make the ascent more strenuous than the elevation alone suggests.
Can You Reach Sveti Nikola by Car?
For visitors who do not wish to embark on a longer hiking ascent, there is an option to approach the peak by car from the northern side of Hvar.
Dirt roads lead to Sveti Nikola, including approaches from the direction of Dola and a turnoff from the Stari Grad – Hvar road. These allow access close to the summit area, but do not provide easy access by personal vehicle to the chapel itself.
The condition of the dirt roads can be poor, with stones, unevenness, and steeper sections, so it is not advisable to rely on passing with a regular low vehicle. A vehicle with higher ground clearance is more suitable for such access, along with a prior check of the road conditions and permission for passage.
The final part to the summit must be completed on foot over rocky terrain. There is no standard tourist parking near the chapel.
If hiking from Dola, Svirč, or Sveta Nedjelja, it is best to leave the car in a permitted area in the starting settlement.
What to See During the Ascent?
The ascent to Sveti Nikola can be combined with visiting several interesting local sites in its vicinity.
The most famous is the Sveti Nedjelja Cave, a large natural cave with the remains of an Augustinian monastery and the church of Our Lady of Snow. It is located high above the settlement and represents one of the most unusual historical sites on Hvar.
On the slopes below the ridge, vineyards of the indigenous Plavac Mali grape, particularly characteristic of the southern part of the island, spread out. Their stone terraces and dry stone walls demonstrate how challenging it has been to cultivate land on such steep terrain.
For experienced hikers and adventure enthusiasts, the area around Sveti Nedjelja is also known for sport climbing and Via Ferrata Hvar. However, the secured climbing routes are not the same as the regular hiking trails to Sveti Nikola and require special equipment and experience.
When is the Best Time to Visit Sveti Nikola?
The most pleasant conditions for the ascent are usually during spring and autumn, when temperatures are not too high, and visibility often allows for distant views of the islands.
In summer, it is best to start very early, especially if ascending from Sveta Nedjelja. A large part of the trail is exposed to the sun, and due to the rocky ground and high temperatures, the ascent can be exhausting. It is necessary to bring enough water, as there are no established sources of drinking water or hospitality facilities along the way.
In winter and during windy weather, the summit ridge can be uncomfortable due to strong gusts of wind and slippery rocks. It is particularly important to avoid approaching the edges of the steep southern cliffs.
Sveti Nikola is an excellent choice for visitors who wish to actively explore Hvar, see the island from a completely different perspective, and visit its highest peak, rather than just the beaches and coastal areas.
