Komarča Beach Vis – A Hidden Rocky Beach Near Rogačić
Komarča Beach is located on the northern side of the island of Vis, right next to the area of Rogačić and just a few kilometers from the town of Vis. Unlike the more well-known island beaches with wide pebble shores, Komarča is much more natural and rugged – here, rocks, larger stones, and small rocky sections dominate, along with exceptionally clear water.
This is not a beach where one comes for sun loungers, beach bars, or long shallow areas. Komarča is a better choice for those looking to find a quiet piece of coastline, set down their belongings among the rocks, and spend several hours mainly in the water.
It is particularly suitable for couples, good swimmers, and anyone who does not mind not having a traditionally arranged sunbathing spot.
Rocky Beach, Not a Classic Pebble Shore
When visiting Komarča, it is good to know what to expect in advance.
The coastline is approximately about a hundred meters long, but it is not uniformly arranged as a compact beach. It consists of rocky sections, larger stones, and several spots where access to the water is easier.
The seabed also consists mainly of rocks and stones, with some smaller sandy or grassy areas. The depth increases gradually, without a sudden drop right at the shore.
Due to the rocky terrain, Komarča is not a place where one can comfortably lie on a thin towel. A mat or thicker towel is advisable, and some visitors simply find a flatter rock and spend most of their time in the water.
The Sea is the Main Reason to Visit
The best part of Komarča is the very clean and clear water.
The rocky seabed allows for good visibility, and along the edges of the rocks, there is enough interesting underwater life to warrant bringing snorkeling gear. It is particularly enjoyable to swim along the coast and explore smaller rocky outcrops rather than just staying directly in front of where belongings are left.
Sea urchins can also be found on the rocky bottom, which is typical for this type of clean rocky shore. Therefore, water shoes are useful, especially when entering at spots with larger stones.
One should not step randomly between the rocks or rely on the bottom that is not clearly visible.
Is There Shade at Komarča?
Komarča is surrounded by low Mediterranean vegetation, and in some parts, the rocks and plants create some shade during the day.
However, I would not rely on natural shade for an entire day. The sun's position changes, and a large part of the coastline remains exposed.
If visiting in mid-July or August, sun protection and sufficient water are much more important than at beaches with large pine trees just behind the shore.
For Komarča, the morning and late afternoon are particularly pleasant.
How to Get to Komarča Beach?
One of the advantages of Komarča is that, despite its wild appearance, it is not particularly difficult to access.
You can reach the area of Rogačić by car from the town of Vis, and then continue to Komarča via a local road. The final part of the approach is narrower and less maintained, with a surface of dirt and stones, but it does not require a long walk like some more remote beaches on Vis.
From the place where you can leave your car to the shore, it is approximately 50 to 100 meters of walking.
The final approach to the beach goes over natural rocky terrain, so normal sandals or sneakers are a better choice than very thin flip-flops.
Parking at Komarča
There is no large paved or officially designated tourist parking area near Komarča.
There is a small area for parking near the access point, after which it is a short walk to the sea. The surface is dirt and rocky.
The number of spots is limited, which is not a significant issue for this beach as Komarča generally does not experience mass visitation.
However, cars should be parked in a way that does not obstruct other vehicles or access to local roads.
No Restaurants, Beach Bars, or Other Amenities
There are no hospitality facilities at Komarča.
There are no beach bars, restaurants, showers, toilets, or rentals for loungers or umbrellas. Everything needed for a visit must be brought along, especially water.
If planning only a morning or afternoon swim, this is not a major drawback since the town of Vis is very close.
For a full day stay, however, one should come prepared.
The lack of infrastructure is one of the reasons why Komarča remains significantly quieter than the more popular beaches on Vis.
Is Komarča Suitable for Children?
For small children, there are much more practical beaches on Vis.
Komarča does not have soft sand, wide pebble shores, or very shallow water. Larger stones, rocks, and sea urchins require more attention when entering the water.
Families with older children who swim well can comfortably spend several hours here, especially if they enjoy exploring the coast with snorkeling gear.
For small children, I would prefer Milna, Zaglav, or Stončica.
Komarča or Rogačić Beach?
Although they are very close, these two beaches do not have the same character.
Rogačić Beach is more practical if one prefers a more classic small pebble shore and an easier place to leave a towel.
Komarča is rockier, wilder, and quieter. It is more suitable for those seeking a secluded piece of coastline rather than a developed bathing area.
If staying in the town of Vis and having a car or scooter, both can be easily visited in one day, allowing you to choose on-site which one suits you better.
A Good Place for Peace and Swimming Away from Crowds
Komarča is not a beach that will suit everyone.
If beach bars, easy sandy entries, loungers, and facilities for children are important, there are much better options.
However, if you are looking for clean water, a natural rocky coastline, and enough space to swim without being surrounded by dozens of other people, Komarča has exactly what you need.
The proximity to the town of Vis is an additional advantage. There is no need to organize a full-day trip or traverse kilometers of poor roads, and after a short approach, you get the feeling of a much more secluded coastline than the distance from the town would suggest.
This is a good beach to bring snorkeling gear, find a quiet part of the rocks, and spend several hours mainly in clear water, rather than on a tourist-developed shore.
