Komarča Beach Vis – a hidden rocky beach near Rogačić
Komarča Beach is located on the northern side of the island of Vis, right next to the area of Rogačić and just a few kilometres from the town of Vis. Unlike the more well-known island beaches with wide pebbly shores, Komarča offers a more natural and rugged experience – here, you will find rocks, larger stones and small rocky sections alongside exceptionally clear water.
This is not a beach for those seeking sun loungers, beach bars or long shallow waters. Komarča is a better choice for those looking to find a quiet stretch of coast, set down their belongings among the rocks, and spend several hours predominantly in the sea.
It is particularly suited to couples, strong swimmers, and anyone who does not mind forgoing a traditionally arranged sunbathing spot.
A rocky beach, not a typical pebbly shore
It is advisable to know what to expect at Komarča.
The coastline stretches for approximately one hundred metres, but it is not uniformly developed as a compact beach. It consists of rocky sections, larger boulders, and a few spots where access to the water is easier.
The seabed is predominantly rock and stones, with occasional sandy or grassy patches. The depth increases gradually, without a sudden drop right at the shore.
Due to the rocky terrain, Komarča is not a place where one can comfortably lie on a thin towel. A mat or thicker towel is advisable, and some visitors simply find a flatter rock and spend most of their time in the water.
The sea is the main reason to visit
The best part of Komarča is the very clean and clear water.
The rocky seabed allows for good visibility, and along the edges of the rocks, there is enough interesting underwater life to warrant bringing snorkelling gear. It is particularly enjoyable to swim along the coast and explore the smaller rocky outcrops rather than just staying directly in front of where belongings are left.
You may also encounter sea urchins on the rocky bottom, which is typical for this type of clean rocky shore. Therefore, water shoes are useful, especially when entering at spots with larger stones.
It is advisable not to tread randomly between the rocks or to rely on the unseen seabed with bare feet.
Is there shade at Komarča?
Komarča is surrounded by low Mediterranean vegetation, and in certain areas, the rocks and foliage provide some shade during the day.
However, I would not rely on natural shade for an entire day. The sun's position changes, and a large part of the coastline remains exposed.
If visiting in mid-July or August, sun protection and sufficient water are much more important than at beaches with large pine trees just behind the shore.
For this reason, morning and late afternoon are particularly pleasant times to be at Komarča.
How to get to Komarča Beach?
One of the advantages of Komarča is that, despite its wild appearance, it is not particularly difficult to access.
You can reach the Rogačić area by car from the town of Vis, and then continue along a local road towards Komarča. The final part of the approach is narrower and less developed, with a surface of earth and stones, but it does not require a long walk as is necessary for some more remote beaches on Vis.
From the point where you can leave your car to the shore is approximately 50 to 100 metres of walking.
The final approach to the beach involves natural rocky terrain, so normal sandals or trainers are a better choice than very thin flip-flops.
Parking at Komarča
There is no large paved or officially designated tourist parking area near Komarča.
There is a small space for parking near the access point, after which you continue on foot for a short distance to the sea. The surface is earthy and rocky.
The number of spaces is limited, which is not a significant issue for this beach as Komarča generally does not experience mass visitation.
However, cars should be parked in a manner that does not obstruct access for other vehicles or local roads.
No restaurants, beach bars or other facilities
At Komarča, there are no catering facilities.
There are no beach bars, restaurants, showers, toilets, or rentals for sun loungers or umbrellas. Everything needed for your stay must be brought with you, especially water.
If planning only a morning or afternoon swim, this is not a major drawback as the town of Vis is very close.
For a full day’s stay, however, one should come prepared.
The lack of infrastructure is one reason why Komarča remains significantly quieter than the more famous beaches on Vis.
Is Komarča suitable for children?
For small children, there are much more practical beaches on Vis.
Komarča lacks soft sand, wide pebbly shores, and very shallow waters. Larger stones, rocks, and sea urchins require more caution when entering the water.
Families with older children who are good swimmers can enjoy spending several hours here, especially if they like exploring the coast with snorkelling gear.
For small children, I would prefer Milna, Zaglav, or Stončica.
Komarča or Rogačić Beach?
Although they are very close, these two beaches do not share the same character.
Rogačić Beach is more practical if you prefer a more traditional pebbly shore and an easier spot to lay down a towel.
Komarča is rockier, wilder, and quieter. It is more suited to those seeking a secluded piece of coast rather than a developed bathing area.
If staying in the town of Vis and having your own car or scooter, both can easily be visited in one day, allowing you to choose the one that suits you best on site.
A good place for peace and swimming away from crowds
Komarča is not a beach that will suit everyone.
If beach bars, easy sandy entries, sun loungers, and facilities for children are important, there are much better options.
However, if you are looking for clear water, a natural rocky shore, and enough space to swim without being surrounded by dozens of other people, Komarča has just what you need.
The proximity to the town of Vis is an additional advantage. There is no need to organise a full-day trip or navigate kilometres of poor dirt roads, and after a short approach, you feel as though you are on a much more secluded shore than the distance from the town would suggest.
This is a good beach to bring your snorkelling gear, find a quiet spot among the rocks, and spend several hours predominantly in the clear water, rather than on a tourist-developed shore.
