Uvala Jorja on Šolta – secluded beach and restaurant on the southern coast

Uvala Jorja is located on the southern coast of the island of Šolta, east of the Tatinja cove and south of Grohota. It is a small, deeply recessed bay surrounded by rocky slopes, pine trees, and dense Mediterranean vegetation. There is only one house in the area, so Jorja retains a sense of seclusion even during the summer, which is hard to find on beaches in populated parts of the island.

At the end of the bay, there is a small natural beach covered with pebbles and smooth stones. The sunbathing area is limited, and some visitors also settle on flatter rocky surfaces by the sea. The beach is not developed or filled in, so one should expect a completely natural terrain, without a paved walkway or ample space for sun loungers.

The water is exceptionally clear, with shades ranging from light turquoise near the shore to dark blue towards the mouth of the bay. The bottom consists of a mix of pebbles, rocks, and underwater stones, making Jorja very suitable for snorkeling. Water shoes are advisable due to larger pebbles, slippery rocks, and potential sea urchins.

Entry into the water is easiest via the small pebble beach. The depth increases gradually, but there is no long shallow area like those found at larger family beaches. The bay may be suitable for families with older children, while it is not particularly practical for small children, strollers, or individuals with reduced mobility.

There is some natural shade along the edges of the bay and under certain pine trees, but shaded spots are limited. The central part of the beach remains exposed to the sun for most of the day, so it is advisable to bring head protection, sunscreen, and sufficient water.

Restaurant Lero in Uvala Jorja

Above the beach is the seasonal family-run restaurant Lero, known for its traditional Dalmatian cuisine, fresh fish, and dishes prepared in a simple island style. Its location above the bay offers a view of the sea and boats moored below the terrace.

The restaurant is not a typical beach bar where one can expect fast food, ice cream, or a wide selection of snacks throughout the day. It is mostly visited for pre-arranged lunch or dinner, and reservations are recommended during July and August.

The dining facilities belong to the restaurant and should not be considered public beach infrastructure. There are no public showers, toilets, changing cabins, sunbed rentals, or lifeguard services at the beach itself. When the restaurant is closed, there are no shops, kiosks, or other places for supplies in the bay.

How to reach Uvala Jorja?

Uvala Jorja can be accessed by land from the interior of Šolta, via rural and walking paths from the direction of Grohota. The final approach is not paved like the road to the town beach, but passes through rocky, uneven, and mostly sunny island terrain.

Sturdy footwear, sufficient water, and sun protection are necessary for hiking. The return from the sea to the interior involves an ascent, so it is not advisable to set out during the hottest part of the summer day.

Do not expect a large, organized parking area near the beach. Smaller vehicles can approach part of the rural road, depending on the current state of the terrain and allowed traffic, but the last section is safer to traverse on foot. Vehicles may only be parked in sufficiently wide spaces, without blocking the road, access to homes, or passage for emergency vehicles.

Therefore, Jorja is not a good choice for visitors who wish to step out of their car just a few meters from the sea. It is easiest to visit by boat, while land access is more suitable for hiking enthusiasts and those seeking natural, less accessible bays.

Arrival by boat and mooring

Due to its spacious marine area, Jorja is popular among sailors and owners of smaller boats. The bay has mooring buoys connected to the restaurant Lero, which should be arranged in advance, especially during the peak season.

The number of buoys is limited, and one should not assume that every empty buoy is available or intended for public use. Crews wishing to dine at the restaurant should simultaneously reserve a table and check the possibility of mooring.

The bay provides good protection from northern and some side winds, but is open to the southern sea. During strong southern winds and waves from the open sea, staying may become uncomfortable and unsafe, so it is essential to check the weather forecast before arrival or overnight stays.

When entering the bay, it is important to reduce speed as swimmers often venture away from the small beach and swim along the edges of the bay. Special care should be taken regarding mooring lines, smaller boats, and people in the water, which may not always be easy to spot from larger vessels.

Who will enjoy Uvala Jorja the most?

Uvala Jorja is best suited for sailors, couples, good swimmers, and visitors who wish to combine swimming in a secluded bay with lunch or dinner by the sea. Its appeal lies not in tourist facilities, but in solitude, clear waters, and the natural landscape of southern Šolta.

It is less suitable for families with very young children, individuals with reduced mobility, and guests expecting easy car access, organized parking, showers, sunbeds, and ample space on the beach.

For land access, it is most pleasant to set out in the morning when it is not too hot. Arriving by boat is nice before the main afternoon crowds, allowing for swimming and staying for lunch. Regardless of the mode of arrival, it is necessary to take all waste with you and respect the private space of the house and restaurant.
