BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Grohote is a village on the island of Šolta, in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is located in the middle of the island, in the northeastern part of the Sridnje polje plain. It is also located at the intersection of the main Šolta road Gornje Selo-Maslinica-Rogač. It is the largest and oldest village on the island. According to the last census, it has 425 inhabitants. It has always been the administrative and economic center of the island. Grohote has a clinic with a helipad, a post office, police, firefighters, a school, a market and an oil mill. It is only 2 kilometers away from the island's main port, Rogač.

CULTURE, HISTORY and ATTRACTIONS

The center of the settlement consists of irregular narrow streets with rustic stone houses. These old valuable examples of architecture contribute to the experience of an authentic island ambience. The population is engaged in agriculture, shipping and lime production. In Grohote there are the remains of an early Christian basilica and the parish church of St. Stephen the First Martyr. The Croatian poet Vesna Parun found her final resting place in the local cemetery in Grohote.
