Stipanska Island near Maslinica

Stipanska is located west of Maslinica and is the largest of the seven islands in the Maslinica archipelago. It is approximately one kilometer long and is recognized from the settlement as one of the green islands that closes the view towards the open sea. Unlike nearby islands that are mainly visited for swimming and peaceful rocky coves, Stipanska is particularly interesting due to its valuable archaeological remains.

The island has no settlements, organized tourist attractions, or regular boat connections. Therefore, visits should be planned in advance and adjusted according to sea conditions, the type of vessel, and the possibility of safe disembarkation.

Remains of the Early Christian Basilica

The most significant feature of Stipanska is the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th or 6th century. Research has confirmed a single-nave church with a rectangular floor plan, an apse on the eastern side, a narthex on the west, and additional rooms along the northern wall. Some walls have been preserved up to approximately three meters in height, allowing the shape of the former structure to be clearly recognized.

It is believed that the basilica was dedicated to Saint Stephen, and that the island was named after it. In addition to the church remains, Stipanska features old field cottages and lime kilns that testify to the later use of the island. The entire area is protected as a cultural-historical landscape.

The site is not arranged as an open-air museum. There are no ticket offices, working hours, information centers, or fully developed paths, so visitors should not expect a conventional tourist experience. Climbing on the remains of the walls is prohibited, and stones and other items should not be moved or taken away.

How to Reach Stipanska

Stipanska cannot be reached on foot or by car. Access from Maslinica is possible by private, rented, or organized vessels, while kayaking is suitable only for those with sufficient experience and appropriate safety equipment. The Punta beach area, located west of the town center, is often used as a starting point for exploring the Maslinica islands.

The arrival time depends on the type of vessel, the departure location, wind, and sea conditions, so it is not possible to provide a reliable travel duration. Before departure, it is advisable to check the weather forecast, especially the wind direction and strength. Small boats and other vessels entering the harbor pass between the islands and Maslinica, making it unsafe to attempt swimming to Stipanska.

Visitors should not expect a well-organized tourist dock or easy disembarkation in all weather conditions. The landing spot is chosen based on the sea, wind, and the size of the vessel. For visitors unfamiliar with the area, arriving with a local boatman or someone who knows where to dock is safer.

Cars should be parked in permitted public areas in Maslinica, and the boat or kayak departure point is reached on foot. Private moorings and parking at marinas or hotels cannot be used without permission.

Coast, Swimming, and Movement on the Island

The coast of Stipanska is natural and predominantly rocky, with smaller stone coves and areas where access to the sea is possible. The entry into the water is not arranged, and the seabed can be sharp and slippery, so it is advisable to wear water shoes. Pine vegetation provides some natural shade, but visitors should not expect shade at the landing site throughout the day.

The archaeological remains are accessed via natural and uneven terrain. There are no paved walkways, handrails, or access paths suitable for persons with mobility difficulties on the island. Sturdy closed shoes are a better choice than flip-flops, especially for exploring the interior of the island.

Stipanska is not the most practical excursion destination for small children, elderly individuals, or those with limited mobility. Families with older children can visit with safe boat transportation and constant supervision, but should be aware of the rocky coast, uneven terrain, and lack of developed facilities.

There are no tourist facilities on-site. It is necessary to bring enough water, food, sun protection, and everything else needed for the stay, and all waste should be taken back to Maslinica.

Best Time to Visit

The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning when temperatures are lower, and the sea is often calmer than later in the day. Late afternoon can also be nice for views towards Maslinica and the sunset, but the return should be planned early enough to avoid navigating and disembarking in the dark.

Stipanska is a year-round natural and archaeological site, but practical visits largely depend on weather conditions. The best period is from late spring to early autumn, with stable forecasts and calm seas. During July and August, it is advisable to avoid the hottest part of the day.

A visit to Stipanska is a good choice for lovers of archaeology, nature, and boat excursions who wish to explore the lesser-known side of Maslinica. The island is not a developed bathing area or a conventional tourist attraction, but the combination of secluded nature and the remains of the basilica makes it a special place in the Maslinica archipelago.
