Stipanska Island near Maslinica
Stipanska is located to the west of Maslinica and is the largest of the seven islands in the Maslinica archipelago. It stretches approximately one kilometre in length and is easily recognised from the mainland as one of the green islands that frames the view of the open sea. Unlike the nearby islands, which are primarily visited for swimming and tranquil stone coves, Stipanska is particularly interesting due to its valuable archaeological remains.
The island is uninhabited and lacks developed tourist attractions or regular boat connections. Therefore, visits should be planned in advance, taking into account sea conditions, the type of vessel, and the possibility of safe disembarkation.
Remains of the Early Christian Basilica
The most significant feature of Stipanska is the remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the 5th or 6th century. Research has confirmed that it was a single-nave church with a rectangular floor plan, an apse on the eastern side, a narthex to the west, and additional rooms along the northern wall. Some sections of the walls have been preserved to a height of approximately three metres, allowing the shape of the former structure to be clearly discerned.
It is believed that the basilica was dedicated to Saint Stephen, and that the island was named after it. In addition to the church remains, Stipanska features old field cottages and lime kilns that testify to the later use of the island. The entire area is protected as a cultural-historical landscape.
The site is not organised as an open-air museum. There are no ticket offices, opening hours, information centres, or fully developed paths, so visitors should not expect a conventional tourist experience. Climbing on the remains of the walls is prohibited, and stones and other objects must not be moved or removed.
How to Reach Stipanska
Stipanska cannot be accessed on foot or by car. Visitors must arrive by their own, rented, or organised vessel from Maslinica, while kayaking is only suitable for those with sufficient experience and appropriate safety equipment. The Punta beach area, located to the west of the town centre, is often used as a starting point for exploring the Maslinica islands.
The time of arrival depends on the type of vessel, departure point, wind conditions, and sea state, making it impossible to provide a reliable travel duration. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before departure, particularly the wind direction and strength. Small boats and other vessels frequently pass between the islands and Maslinica, making it unsafe to attempt swimming to Stipanska.
Visitors should not expect a developed tourist dock or easy disembarkation in all weather conditions. The landing site should be chosen based on the sea, wind, and size of the vessel. For those unfamiliar with the area, it is safer to arrive with a local boatman or someone knowledgeable about suitable landing spots.
Cars should be parked in permitted public spaces in Maslinica, and visitors must walk to the boat or kayak departure point. Private moorings and marina or hotel parking cannot be used without permission.
Coastline, Swimming, and Movement on the Island
The coastline of Stipanska is natural and predominantly rocky, featuring smaller stone coves and areas where access to the sea is possible. The entry into the water is not developed, and the seabed can be sharp and slippery, so it is advisable to wear suitable footwear for the sea. Pine vegetation offers some natural shade, but visitors should not rely on shade at the landing site throughout the day.
The archaeological remains are accessed via natural and uneven terrain. There are no paved walkways, handrails, or access points suitable for those with mobility difficulties on the island. Sturdy closed footwear is a better choice than flip-flops, especially for exploring the interior of the island.
Stipanska is not the most practical destination for small children, elderly individuals, or those with limited mobility. Families with older children can visit with safe boat transport and constant supervision, but they should be prepared for a rocky coastline, uneven terrain, and the absence of developed facilities.
There are no tourist facilities on-site. Visitors should bring sufficient water, food, sun protection, and all necessary items for their stay, and all waste must be taken back to Maslinica.
Best Time to Visit
The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning when temperatures are lower and the sea is often calmer than later in the day. Late afternoon can also be lovely for views towards Maslinica and the sunset, but it is advisable to plan the return early enough to avoid navigating and disembarking in the dark.
Stipanska is a year-round natural and archaeological site, but practical visits largely depend on weather conditions. The best period is from late spring to early autumn, with stable forecasts and calm seas. During July and August, it is recommended to avoid the hottest part of the day.
A visit to Stipanska is a good choice for enthusiasts of archaeology, nature, and boat trips who wish to explore a lesser-known side of Maslinica. The island is not a developed bathing area or a typical tourist attraction, but the combination of secluded nature and the remains of the basilica makes it a unique spot in the Maslinica archipelago.
