Diga Beach in Stomorska – Central Pebble Beach Along the Promenade
Diga Beach is situated in the heart of Stomorska, on the western side of the bay and just a few minutes' walk from the main promenade. It is the closest genuine pebble beach to the old town center, restaurants, cafes, and shops, making it the most practical choice for combining swimming with lunch, coffee, or an evening stroll by the sea.
Accessing Diga from the center of Stomorska is straightforward, without the need for driving or searching for hidden paths. Simply continue along the coastal path towards the western side of the bay. It takes only a few minutes of easy walking from the main part of the promenade to the beach, and the access is paved and mostly flat. Due to this location, Diga is particularly convenient for guests staying in the old part of Stomorska who do not wish to use a car daily.
The beach consists of a smaller pebble area, which is followed by concrete surfaces, stone slabs, and organized entries into the sea. It is not as large as Veli Dolac, but it provides enough space for short swims and several hours by the sea. During July and August, the main pebble area quickly fills up as it is used by families, guests from nearby apartments, and people arriving by boat.
The pebbles are generally finer near the shore, while larger stones and some boulders appear in the shallows. The entry into the sea is gradual and easier than at Pulenat and other rocky bathing spots to the east of the town. Children can play along the shore, but the shallows are not particularly wide, so parents should stay close to younger swimmers.
On the side concrete and stone areas, entry into the sea is via steps or ladders. These parts are more suitable for swimmers who want to access deeper water immediately, while the central beach area is more practical for families. Water shoes are not mandatory, but they can be helpful for children and individuals who find walking on pebbles uncomfortable.
Diga is located within the Stomorska bay but is far enough from the main part of the promenade and most boat moorings. The sea is generally calm and suitable for swimming, especially in the morning. Since Stomorska has an active port with small boats, sailboats, and excursion vessels, it is not advisable to swim too far into the bay or cross navigation routes.
The greatest advantage of Diga is not only the pebble beach but also its location within the town. Restaurants, cafes, and shops are just a few dozen meters away, so there is no need to carry large supplies of food and drinks. You can walk to the promenade in a swimsuit, have lunch or coffee, and then return to the beach without a long walk. Accommodation near Diga is therefore among the most practical in Stomorska.
There is no separate beach bar set up directly on the pebbles. Food and drinks are available from the hospitality offerings at the nearby promenade. This distinguishes Diga from Veli Dolac, where Beach Bar Africa is located right by the bathing area, but the selection of restaurants and cafes in the center of Stomorska is significantly larger.
In this part of the coast, there are organized access points and showers, which is typical for the main bathing areas on both sides of the Stomorska center. However, one should not expect large changing rooms, organized animation programs, or extensive areas with rows of sun loungers. Diga is a well-maintained local bathing area, not a large tourist complex.
There is not much natural shade on the pebble part itself. Some shade during the day is provided by surrounding houses, walls, and individual trees along the coastal path, but most of the beach remains exposed to the sun. Those planning to stay for several hours should bring an umbrella. A thicker mat is also practical on the harder side surfaces, as concrete and stone heat up quickly in summer.
Access by car is possible through Stomorska, but Diga does not have a large separate parking area designated solely for bathers. Parking in the town center during summer can be challenging due to narrow streets, and available spots are used by residents, guests of apartments, and visitors to restaurants. It is best to use the parking of your accommodation or leave the vehicle in a permitted area before entering the narrow coastal part and continue on foot.
Driving down to the beach does not make much sense. The coastal area is narrow, and during summer, it is frequented by pedestrians, delivery vehicles, and guests from nearby houses. Diga is primarily a beach that is accessed on foot, especially when staying anywhere in the central part of Stomorska.
Due to its proximity to the settlement, the beach is not completely quiet. Conversations from the promenade, boats, and the daily life of the town can be heard, but there is no loud music or organized entertainment on the beach itself. It is the calmest in the morning, while it becomes livelier in the afternoon. In the evening, most bathers retreat, and the area transforms back into a part of the seaside promenade.
Diga is a good choice for families seeking an easy pebble entry, older guests who do not wish to walk to more distant bays, and anyone wanting to be close to restaurants and shops. For more natural shade and larger space, Veli Dolac is better, while Pulenat and Pišćena are more suitable for good swimmers who prefer rocky and quieter places without facilities.
This is not a beach that one would specifically drive to from the other side of Šolta, but it is very valuable for those staying in Stomorska. It allows for a quick access to clean sea and a pebble entry from apartments, restaurants, or the promenade without the need for a car or special planning. This simplicity is the greatest advantage of Diga Beach.
