Mali Brijun is one of the 14 islands that make up Brijuni, located off the western coast of Istria, opposite the town of Fažana. Together with Veliki Brijun, it is part of the protected area of Brijuni National Park, known for its unspoiled nature, rich history, and crystal-clear sea.
The island covers an area of approximately 1 km² and features a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Mali Brijun is an ideal destination for a day trip, as well as for a peaceful retreat away from crowds, offering a unique blend of nature and cultural heritage.
Mali Brijun has a rich and layered history. The most notable landmark on the island is the Austro-Hungarian fortress Fort Minor, built in the late 19th century as part of the defensive system of the main naval port in Pula. Today, the fortress is an impressive historical site and a unique outdoor venue.
During the summer, theatrical performances and cultural events are held at Fort Minor, organized by Theater Ulysses, founded by the renowned actor Rade Šerbedžija. These events give the island a distinct cultural identity and attract visitors from across Croatia and abroad.
In addition to the fortress, the island also features remnants of military structures and traces of earlier historical periods, making Mali Brijun an interesting destination for history and architecture enthusiasts.
The beaches on Mali Brijun are natural, rocky, and pebbly, surrounded by unspoiled vegetation and crystal-clear waters. They are ideal for those seeking tranquility, privacy, and an authentic nature experience.
The coves are smaller and secluded, perfect for swimming, diving, and exploring the underwater world. Since the island is located within a protected area, the nature is preserved, and the sea is exceptionally clean, making it attractive for ecology enthusiasts and active vacationers.
Mali Brijun does not have a developed classic tourist infrastructure like larger resorts. This is its advantage – peace, quiet, and the absence of mass tourism.
During cultural events at Fort Minor, occasional catering services (bars and drink stands) are available. For a wider selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs, visitors typically head to nearby Fažana or Pula, where they can enjoy Istrian cuisine, fresh fish, olive oil, and fine wines.

There are no classic hotel facilities or private accommodations on Mali Brijun, as it is located within a protected area of the national park.
Visitors typically stay in Fažana or Pula, where a wide range of hotels, apartments, and campsites are available. Staying on the mainland allows for easy boat access to the island and the combination of a seaside holiday with the exploration of the natural and cultural beauties of Brijuni.
