Mali Brijun is one of the 14 islands that make up the Brijuni, located off the western coast of Istria, opposite the town of Fažana. Together with Veliki Brijun, it forms part of the protected area known as Brijuni National Park, renowned for its unspoiled nature, rich history, and crystal-clear waters.
The island covers approximately 1 km² and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Mali Brijun is an ideal destination for a day trip, as well as for a peaceful retreat away from the crowds, offering a unique blend of nature and cultural heritage.
Mali Brijun boasts a rich and layered history. The island's most notable landmark is the Austro-Hungarian fortress Fort Minor, built in the late 19th century as part of the defensive system for the main naval port in Pula. Today, the fortress serves as an impressive historical site and a unique open-air venue.
During the summer, theatrical performances and cultural events are held at Fort Minor, organised by Ulysses Theatre, founded by the renowned actor Rade Šerbedžija. These events give the island a distinctive cultural identity and attract visitors from across Croatia and abroad.
In addition to the fortress, remnants of military structures and traces of earlier historical periods can be found on the island, making Mali Brijun an intriguing destination for history and architecture enthusiasts.
The beaches on Mali Brijun are natural, rocky, and pebbly, surrounded by unspoiled vegetation and crystal-clear waters. They are ideal for those seeking peace, privacy, and an authentic experience of nature.
The coves are smaller and secluded, perfect for swimming, diving, and exploring the underwater world. As the island lies within a protected area, the natural environment is preserved, and the sea is exceptionally clean, making it attractive for ecology enthusiasts and those seeking active leisure.
Mali Brijun does not have a developed tourist infrastructure like larger resorts. This is precisely its advantage – peace, quiet, and the absence of mass tourism.
During cultural events at Fort Minor, occasional hospitality services (bars and drink stands) are available. For a wider selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs, visitors typically head to nearby Fažana or Pula, where they can enjoy Istrian cuisine, fresh fish, olive oil, and fine wines.
Mali Brijun is perfect for:
A trip to Mali Brijun typically involves a boat ride from Fažana, and it is possible to combine the visit with a tour of Veliki Brijun and other parts of Brijuni National Park. Active leisure enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking around the island or guided tours.
The proximity to Pula allows for additional excursions and sightseeing of landmarks such as the Pula Arena.
There are no traditional hotel facilities or private accommodation on Mali Brijun, as it is located within a protected area of the national park.
Visitors typically stay in Fažana or Pula, where a wide range of hotels, apartments, and campsites are available. Staying on the mainland allows for easy boat access to the island and the opportunity to combine a seaside holiday with exploration of the natural and cultural beauties of Brijuni.
Mali Brijun is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic experience of Istria, combining unspoiled nature, rich history, and unique cultural events – away from mass tourism yet close to urban amenities.
