How to Reach Sveta Nedjelja – New Road from Hvar and Route via Jelsa

Due to the steep terrain and high island ridge, road connectivity has long been significantly more complex than one might expect based on distance on the map.

A major change occurred with the opening of the new road Sveta Nedjelja – Dubovica in June 2026. This new road, approximately 6.2 kilometers long, allows for a more direct drive between the town of Hvar and Sveta Nedjelja, without a large detour via Jelsa. The journey from the town of Hvar is now significantly shorter, approximately 15 to 20 minutes under favorable conditions.

Another important traffic connection leads via Jelsa, Pitava, and the Pitve – Zavala tunnel. After exiting the tunnel, the road continues through Zavala and Ivan Dolac towards Sveta Nedjelja. This approach is particularly convenient for guests coming from Jelsa, Stari Grad, and the eastern parts of the island.

The Pitve – Zavala tunnel is narrow, without internal lighting, and traffic is regulated alternately by traffic lights. After the tunnel, the road runs along the southern coast, where caution is needed in certain sections due to curves and a narrower roadway.

To reach Hvar by car, the ferry line Split – Stari Grad is most commonly used, followed by a drive towards the chosen approach to Sveta Nedjelja.

Spring and autumn are excellent choices for hiking, sport climbing, and walks through the vineyard landscape. Temperatures are more comfortable for ascending to the cave and Sveti Nikola, while in summer, such excursions require an early start.
