Stončica Vis – A Tranquil Cove, Fishing Settlement, and Excursion Spot Near Vis

Stončica is a long and deeply recessed cove located on the northeastern side of the island of Vis, approximately six kilometers from the town of Vis. At the end of the cove, there is a small fishing-tourist settlement, a sandy beach, and a tavern, while the entrance to the cove from the east is guarded by the large stone lighthouse of Stončica.

This is not a typical island destination with a promenade, shops, and a central square. A few old houses and newer holiday homes are scattered along the coast and on the slopes above the sea, while a large part of the cove remains green and undeveloped. This is why Stončica offers a good combination that is not so common on Vis – it is close enough to the town for quick access to necessities, yet when you descend towards the sea, it feels much further from civilization.

Stončica is particularly suitable for those seeking quieter accommodation by the sea, a natural cove, and a sandy beach, but who do not want to be completely cut off from the town of Vis.

A Small Fishing Village, Not a Typical Tourist Settlement

Stončica originated as a small fishing hamlet. Houses were built where the steep terrain allowed access to the sea, and due to the narrow cove, there has never been significant continuous development along the coast.

Later, weekend homes and apartments were added to the old houses, but due to the high slopes and limited space, Stončica did not become a large apartment settlement. The tourist board of Vis highlights this as one of the unique features of the area – new houses have not completely taken over the landscape but have mostly remained scattered among the greenery.

Therefore, while staying here, one should not expect evening strolls along a promenade, a row of cafes, or shops at every turn. Stončica is much more a place for the sea, tranquility, and a slower pace of relaxation.

Where is Stončica Located?

The cove is situated on the eastern, or northeastern side of Vis, between the areas of the town of Vis and Milna. It is approximately six kilometers from the town of Vis, and the drive takes about ten minutes, depending on which part of the town you are coming from. To the south, it is also connected by road to Rukavac.

This is a very practical location for exploring the eastern side of the island. The town of Vis is close enough for shopping, dining, or accessing the ferry port, while Milna, Zaglav, Smokova, and Rukavac with Srebrna and Tepluša are easily accessible by car.

Stončica, however, feels more isolated than the distance on the map suggests. As you descend from the main road towards the sea, the sense of proximity to the town quickly diminishes.

A Long Cove That Almost Hides from the Open Sea

One of the most distinctive features of Stončica is its shape.

The cove is long, narrow, and slightly curved, which means that its inner part is not fully visible from the open sea. The high slopes close off a large part of the coastline, and at the very end, the cove concludes with a very shallow sandy section.

This shape gives Stončica a completely different character compared to the wide open coves on the southern side of Vis. As you go deeper towards the end, the sea becomes calmer and shallower, and the landscape greener.

The sand at the end of the cove is not a coincidence. The Geopark Vis Archipelago explains that the sandy coves on the eastern and southeastern sides of Vis are connected to deposits of aeolian sand from the Ice Age, when the sea level was significantly lower than today. Due to these deposits, Stončica is very shallow, and the water in the inner part can be several degrees warmer than the open sea during summer. The area is also included in the ecological network Natura 2000.

The Beach at the End of the Cove

At the end of Stončica, there is one of the few sandy beaches on Vis.

What it is particularly known for is its very long shallow area. The water remains shallow for dozens of meters from the shore, making this part of Stončica especially popular among families with small children.

There is natural shade from palm trees, tamarisks, and other vegetation near the beach, and during the summer season, a small beach bar and tavern operate. There is also a space for beach volleyball.

However, it is worth making a special visit to the beach itself as it differs significantly from the rest of the cove. Stončica as a place and cove is a much broader concept than just a few dozen meters of sandy shore at their end.

Arrival by Car and Parking

Stončica is accessed via an asphalt road from the direction of the town of Vis, but you cannot drive directly to the sandy beach.

Vehicles are left above the inner part of the cove, after which you continue on foot towards the beach. It takes about ten minutes of easy walking to reach the sea.

It is important to know that some holiday homes along the coast also do not have direct car access. If you book accommodation in Stončica, it is advisable to check how far the parking is from the house and how much luggage needs to be carried on foot. This can be much more significant here than in a typical settlement with a road running through it.

For a day visit to the beach, this is not a major issue, but for a week-long stay with children and a lot of luggage, the difference is considerable.

Stončica Lacks Typical Tourist Infrastructure

Stončica is not a place where you should expect a supermarket, pharmacy, ATM, and a wide selection of restaurants.

There is seasonal catering available near the beach, but for larger shopping and other daily needs, it is most practical to go to the town of Vis. Information about private accommodation in the cove also places the nearest shops, pharmacy, health services, and ATMs outside of Stončica, mostly in the area of the town of Vis.

This is good to know before arrival, especially if staying in a house by the sea and the car is not immediately next to the accommodation.

On the other hand, the lack of extensive infrastructure is one of the reasons why Stončica retains its quieter character.

Stončica by Boat – One of the More Popular Vis Coves for Sailors

Stončica is very interesting when approached from the sea.

Although it is open to the northeast, due to its great length and curved shape, the inner part of the cove can provide good shelter. The official pilot of the Tourist Board of Vis specifically highlights the southern, or inner part, as safer, where the depth is approximately five to six meters, and the two shores are about 150 meters apart.

The bottom is predominantly sandy. When anchoring, the anchor should be well buried, as simply dropping it onto the sand does not automatically ensure good holding.

Stončica may appear completely calm during summer calms, but it should not be considered an unconditionally safe shelter for every weather situation. The high sides of the cove can create turbulence and changes in wind direction during stronger winds, which is explicitly noted by the local pilot.

During the season, organized moorings or buoys may also appear, but their number and management can change. If planning to stay overnight, it is better to check the current conditions shortly before arrival rather than relying on older nautical guides.

Accessing the Shore from the Boat

Sailors find Stončica attractive because after anchoring, they are not limited to staying on the boat.

At the very end of the cove, there is a beach, while next to the tavern, there is a small dock used for guest arrivals. The capacity is limited, so it should not be viewed as a typical port or marina.

For a larger number of boats, a tender is more practical, allowing access to the inner part of the cove.

Due to the sandy beach, tavern, and relative proximity to the town of Vis, Stončica is particularly pleasant for a day stop or a quieter evening on the boat when the weather conditions are favorable.

The Lighthouse at the Entrance to Stončica

On the eastern cape that closes off the entrance to the cove stands the Stončica Lighthouse, one of the most prominent structures in this part of Vis.

Built in 1865, its 28-meter-high stone tower can be seen from afar at sea. The lighthouse is not just a decoration at the entrance to the bay – it is a large active maritime lighthouse whose main light has a range of about 30 nautical miles.

From the area of the settlement and beach, you can also walk to the lighthouse. The walk takes about twenty to thirty minutes one way, depending on the starting point and pace.

If spending the whole day in Stončica, this is the best addition to swimming: in the morning or later in the afternoon, go to the cape, and spend the hottest part of the day by the sea.

Stončica is Also Good for Walking from the Town of Vis

It is not necessary to arrive at the cove by car.

The marked walking route Vis – Kut – Zlo Polje – Stončica Cove leads from the town of Vis through the interior of the island and ends at the cove. The tourist board estimates the entire route at about 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking, with approximately 170 meters of ascent and descent.

This is a much more interesting option in spring and autumn than in mid-August. The path passes by vineyards and through the inland landscape of Vis, so arriving at Stončica is quite different than by car.

For the return, one should plan for the same route or arrange transportation.

Accommodation in Stončica – For Those Who Truly Seek Peace

There is private accommodation in Stončica, but the selection is much smaller than in the town of Vis, Komiža, or Rukavac.

The most interesting are the houses and apartments near the sea, especially for those for whom quiet and swimming are more important than evening outings.

Staying here is well-suited for a couple or family who want to spend most of the day by the sea and do not mind driving to get groceries or to Vis in the evening.

It is less suitable for guests who want to visit restaurants, shops, and bars on foot every day. For that type of vacation, the town of Vis is much more practical.

Before booking, it is particularly important to check three things: the distance to parking, access to the house, and the actual distance to the sandy beach. Due to the steep terrain, two houses that appear very close on the map may have quite different access.

What to See and Do in Stončica?

Stončica is not a place to visit based on a list of ten attractions. It makes more sense to experience it as a whole.

A day can start with swimming at the sandy beach, followed by lunch at the Stončica Tavern, a walk along the coast to the lighthouse, and in the evening, staying by the sea as day-trippers begin to leave.

If arriving by boat, late afternoon is often the most beautiful part of the day as the inner part of the cove calms down after the daily crowds.

Nearby, you can combine visits to Milna, Zaglav, Smokova, and other bathing spots on the eastern side of Vis, while the town of Vis is close enough for an evening stroll and a wider selection of restaurants.

Who is Stončica Best For?

Families with small children will find it most suitable due to the sandy beach and long shallow area.

Couples and guests seeking peace will appreciate the small houses by the sea and the fact that after the departure of day visitors, the cove becomes noticeably quieter.

Sailors will find it interesting due to the deeply recessed bay, sandy bottom, the possibility of reaching the shore, and the tavern in the inner part.

More active guests can enjoy the walk to the lighthouse and the walking connection with the town of Vis.

If nightlife, a wide selection of restaurants, and shops within a few minutes' walk are a priority, Stončica is not the best base. If the goal is to wake up in a small Vis cove and spend most of the day by the sea, then that is its greatest advantage.

When is the Best Time to Visit Stončica?

In July and August, the beach is the most visited, and during the middle of the day, day-trippers from the mainland and boats come to the cove.

For a quieter experience, June and September are much more pleasant, when the sea is suitable for swimming, and the cove does not have the peak summer crowds.

If coming during the peak season, mornings are best for the beach and parking, while late afternoons are good for a walk to the lighthouse.

Stončica is particularly beautiful when it is not being squeezed into a short "we must see another beach". It is worth spending a few hours here, and even better, a whole day.

Why is it Worth Visiting Stončica?

On Vis, there are more dramatic cliffs, more famous beaches, and larger places, but Stončica offers a rare good combination of everything needed for a peaceful day on the island.

A long green cove, a few old fishing houses, sandy bottom, calm shallow water, a tavern under the trees, and a large lighthouse on the cape give it an identity that is hard to confuse with any other place on Vis.

The best part is that it is not far away. From the town of Vis to Stončica, it takes about ten minutes, and after the last few hundred meters on foot, the atmosphere feels like you have arrived in a much more remote part of the island.

This is actually the best description of Stončica – close enough to everything you need, yet far enough away to escape for a few hours or a few days.
