St George's Church – The Most Important Sacred Landmark of Bobovišća

St George's Church is situated in the heart of the old settlement of Bobovišća and serves as the most significant sacred building in the area, as well as the seat of the parish. It is dedicated to Saint George the Martyr, the patron saint of Bobovišća, whose feast day is traditionally celebrated on 23 April, marking one of the most important days in the local community's calendar.

The church's history dates back to the 17th century. The construction of the original church began in 1656 and was completed in 1696, as evidenced by an inscription on the stone doorframe that has survived to this day. The original structure was a Baroque church that, over the centuries, became too small and dilapidated for the parish's needs. At the end of the 19th century, it was demolished to its foundations, and in its place, a new church was erected in 1914, which still dominates the centre of the village.

The present church is built in the shape of a cross and features a more spacious interior and a bell tower that rises above the stone houses of the old settlement. During its construction, part of the valuable inventory from the old church was preserved, including altars, crosses, and various liturgical items that still testify to the long history of the parish.

Inside, several valuable paintings attributed to an unknown Venetian painter are kept, adding further cultural and artistic significance to the church. For this reason, St George's Church is of interest not only to the faithful but also to visitors wishing to explore the cultural heritage of Brač Island.

The church is a protected cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia, and over the years, numerous restoration and preservation works have been carried out.

A visit to St George's Church can easily be combined with a stroll through the old part of Bobovišća, where narrow stone streets, traditional houses, and a tranquil atmosphere provide an authentic experience of the Brač interior. Due to its history and importance to the local community, the church represents one of the most significant cultural and historical landmarks in this part of the island.
