St John the Baptist Church – Spiritual and Historical Centre of Postira

St John the Baptist Church is located in the very centre of Postira and is one of the most recognisable symbols of the village. Situated by the main waterfront and surrounded by stone houses of the old town, it has served for centuries as an important religious, cultural, and social hub for the local community.

The current parish church was built in the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier Early Christian church, reflecting the long-standing Christian tradition in this part of Brač Island. Over the years, it has been renovated and expanded several times, and its present appearance is the result of various construction works that have preserved the blend of historical heritage and sacred art.

Particular attention is drawn to the elegant stone bell tower, which dominates the view of Postira's harbour and is one of the first details visitors notice upon arriving in the village. The interior of the church exudes simplicity and peace, adorned with valuable altars, sacred objects, and artworks that testify to the rich history of the parish.

In addition to its religious significance, the church is an essential stop for anyone wishing to explore the cultural heritage of Postira. Thanks to its location in the heart of the village, it is easily accessible during a stroll along the waterfront and the old stone streets. It is particularly striking in the evening when the illuminated bell tower is visible from nearly all parts of the harbour.

For enthusiasts of history, architecture, and sacred heritage, St John the Baptist Church offers an opportunity to engage with one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of Postira, as well as a significant part of the identity of this Brač village.
