St Jerome's Church, Pučišća | Historical Parish Church Above the Pučišća Cove

St Jerome's Church is located in the heart of the old town of Pučišća, just a few minutes' walk above the waterfront and the main square. Perched on an elevated part of the village, its bell tower is visible from nearly the entire Pučišća cove and serves as a key landmark for those arriving by sea.

The current parish church was built in the 16th century, during a time when Pučišća began to develop its maritime and stone masonry traditions more robustly. It was constructed on the site of an older medieval church and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries. During the periods of Ottoman and pirate attacks, the church, like much of the village, played a significant role in the daily lives of the residents of Pučišća.

The exterior of the church is quite simple and typical of Dalmatian sacred architecture, built from Brač stone. The main façade faces St Jerome's Square, while a stone bell tower alongside the church dominates the old part of the village. The bell tower and the stone details around the church clearly reflect the long-standing tradition of stone processing for which Pučišća is known.

Inside, the church is more richly adorned than one might expect from the outside. It houses stone altars, valuable paintings, wooden details, and several artistic items related to the history of local brotherhoods and maritime families. Some of the internal stone elements were crafted by local stonemasons, further linking the church to the village's stone masonry tradition.

Of particular interest is the large stone altar made from Brač stone, along with several older gravestones and reliefs embedded in the church walls. Over the years, the church has been renovated multiple times, thanks to the local craftsmen and stonemasons from Pučišća.

The area surrounding the church is one of the quietest parts of the village centre. The stone steps, narrow streets, and views towards the cove provide a glimpse of what Pučišća looked like before the advent of tourism. In the evenings, the contrast between the quieter old part of the village and the bustling waterfront is quite palpable.

During the summer, St Jerome's Church often hosts cultural events, including classical music concerts, performances by the International Summer Music School, and various programmes as part of the Pučišća Summer Festival. The stone interior and acoustics make it well-suited for smaller musical performances.

The church is most easily accessed on foot from the village centre via the stone streets above the waterfront. It is not possible to drive directly to the entrance as the church is situated within the old core of Pučišća.
