You do not reach Gatula by tourist car.

Biševo is accessed by boat, most commonly from Komiža, and then you continue on foot into the interior of the island.

If you are setting off from Mezuporat, where the starting point for the Blue Cave is located, a well-maintained island path leads towards the Poje area and the Visitor Centre.

Be prepared for an uphill walk, but the route is not classic demanding hiking. It takes approximately twenty minutes of walking to reach the central part of the island, depending on your pace and starting point.

Trainers or good sandals are much more practical than flip-flops, especially if lunch is combined with further exploration of the Geostaza.

For those with reduced mobility, the Visitor Centre provides organised transport by electric vehicle from Mezuporat, while transfers for organised groups can be arranged as part of the Centre's programmes.

Arriving After the Blue Cave

One of the best combinations is the Blue Cave in the morning, the Visitor Centre, and then lunch at Gatula.

After a brief visit to the cave, there is no need to immediately board the boat back to Komiža.

From Mezuporat, you can head inland, explore a completely different landscape of Biševo, and have lunch at Gatula.

After that, the excursion can continue towards Porat or Salbunara, where the rest of the day can be spent on the sandy beach.

This way, in one day, you can get a nearly complete picture of Biševo – the Blue Cave, the island's interior, local gastronomy, and one of its sandy coves.

Gatula is Not a Beach Restaurant

If you want a restaurant where you can walk from the sea in your swimsuit to the table in two minutes, Porat is a more practical choice.

Tavern Tomić and Kod Jakše are located right next to the sandy beach and are naturally connected to all-day swimming.

Gatula is different.

You need to climb into the interior of the island to reach it, and in return, you receive a more modern space, a serious gastronomic offering, a wine list, and a panoramic view.

Therefore, it does not make sense to choose between them based solely on the menu.

For a day at the beach, Porat is better. For exploring the interior of Biševo and a lunch that is itself part of the excursion, Gatula is a more interesting choice.

Should You Make a Reservation?

For lunch during the peak season, reservations are advisable, especially for larger groups.

Gatula does not operate in the same way as a large city restaurant. The number of guests on Biševo depends on boat connections, organised groups, and the weather, so the daily rhythm can change quickly.

If you are visiting outside of July and August, it is a good idea to check in advance whether the restaurant is open that day. Opening hours on Biševo can be adjusted according to the season, weather conditions, and boat traffic.

The restaurant is not designed solely as a place for adults or formal gastronomic dinners. There are child-friendly options, and the space of the Visitor Centre can further enhance the entire excursion for families.

A greater challenge may be walking with very young children, especially during the hottest summer heat.

If you are going with children, it is much more comfortable to set off from Mezuporat earlier, visit the Centre, have lunch, and then head down towards one of the beaches.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

For lunch, it is best to arrive after a morning or early afternoon visit to the Blue Cave.

This avoids unnecessary backtracking and gives the day on Biševo a natural order.

In July and August, walking inland should be avoided during the hottest part of the day if you are sensitive to heat.

June and September are particularly good for combining the restaurant and Geostaza as walking around the island is much more pleasant.

If you plan to have dinner, it is essential to check the restaurant's current opening hours and the possibility of returning by boat, as Biševo cannot be treated as a place from which you can simply call a taxi to Komiža at any time.
