Le Grand Bleu Biševo – Coffee and a Break by the Blue Cave
Le Grand Bleu is situated on the island of Biševo, in the Mezuporat area, right next to the spot where small boats transport visitors to the Blue Cave. Due to its location, it is one of those places that nearly everyone will notice during their trip to Biševo's most famous attraction.
Although it appears on maps in the restaurant category, Le Grand Bleu is primarily a café and simple snack bar. People come here for coffee, cold drinks, or a light bite while waiting for their turn to visit the Blue Cave, rather than for a traditional Dalmatian lunch featuring fish and multiple courses.
Its greatest advantage is its location – just a few steps from the sea, the pier, and the entire system for visiting the Blue Cave.
Le Grand Bleu is located in Mezuporat
Mezuporat is the main entry point for visiting the Blue Cave.
Excursion boats and the regular line from Komiža drop off visitors here, after which tickets are purchased and boarding for the small official boats that can pass through the low entrance of the Blue Cave takes place.
Le Grand Bleu is located right in this area, so there is no need to search for it or plan an additional trip to get there.
This is particularly practical during the peak season when waiting for the cave tour can take some time. Instead of standing in the sun, you can sit down, have a coffee or a cold drink, and wait for your turn.
What does Le Grand Bleu offer?
The menu is simple and tailored to the large number of daily visitors to Biševo.
It mainly features coffee, espresso, juices, cold drinks, and sandwiches, which are items that can be quickly served and consumed during a short stay in Mezuporat.
For this reason, Le Grand Bleu should not be compared to taverns in Porat, where one goes for fish, squid, and a longer lunch by the beach.
If the plan is just to visit the Blue Cave and return to Komiža, a practical break can be made here.
If you are staying on Biševo for the whole day and want a more substantial lunch, Porat is a better next stop, as there are several more traditional island restaurants and taverns there.
A good place to wait for the Blue Cave
The main reason Le Grand Bleu makes sense is the waiting.
During July and August, boats from Komiža, Vis, Hvar, Split, and other places arrive simultaneously in Mezuporat. The number of small boats that can enter the cave is limited, so the queue cannot always be resolved immediately.
Le Grand Bleu therefore functions best as a place to rest between arriving at Biševo and the actual cave tour.
On a sunny summer day, shade and a seated area with a drink can be particularly useful, especially if travelling with children or if you have arrived at Biševo after a long boat ride.
Seaside terrace
The establishment has outdoor seating, and the entire space faces Mezuporat and the sea.
The atmosphere varies significantly depending on the time of day.
Early in the morning, Mezuporat can still be relatively quiet. Later in the morning, when the main wave of visitors to the Blue Cave begins, it becomes much livelier – boats arrive, visitors wait for their number, and small boats continuously depart for the cave and return.
Le Grand Bleu should not be imagined as a hidden romantic tavern on a deserted Biševo coast. It is located in the busiest tourist area of the island and is adapted to that.
When is the best time to visit?
The most natural time to sit down is before or after visiting the Blue Cave.
If you arrive early and need to wait for your turn, having a coffee or drink is a practical way to pass the time.
After the visit, another short break can be made before heading back to Komiža or continuing on to Porat, Salbunara, and other parts of Biševo.
Le Grand Bleu operates primarily during the island's daily excursion rhythm. The currently published opening hours are from morning until late afternoon, which also indicates that it is not a restaurant primarily focused on dinner.
As Biševo is a distinctly seasonal destination, it is advisable to check the opening hours before setting off outside the main tourist season.
How to get to Le Grand Bleu?
You cannot reach the establishment by car.
The simplest way is to take a boat from Komiža to Biševo and disembark in Mezuporatu.
This can be a regular boat line, a local taxi boat, a private vessel, or an organised trip that includes the Blue Cave.
After disembarking, there is no additional walking through the island – Le Grand Bleu is located in the immediate vicinity of the pier and the entrance to the cave tour system.
Arriving on the regular line from Komiža
For guests staying in Komiža, Biševo can be visited without an organised tourist trip.
The regular boat line connects Komiža with Mezuporat, Salbunara, and Porat, allowing for a much more interesting day on Biševo than a quick trip solely to the Blue Cave.
A good combination is to disembark in Mezuporatu, visit the cave, and take a short break at Le Grand Bleu, before continuing to other parts of the island.
This avoids the situation where you return to Komiža just twenty minutes after the visit.
What to do after Le Grand Bleu and the Blue Cave?
If your schedule allows, it is worth continuing to Porat.
Porat has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on Biševo, a large shallow area, natural shade, and several places for a more serious lunch.
Another option is Salbunara, a smaller and quieter sandy cove with much less tourist traffic.
Biševo is dotted with old walking paths, so certain parts of the island can also be connected by walking.
This is a better way to get to know Biševo than just staying in Mezuporatu, visiting the cave, and leaving.
Le Grand Bleu or a restaurant in Porat?
It depends on what you are looking for.
If you need coffee, a cold drink, or a quick sandwich while waiting for the Blue Cave, Le Grand Bleu is more practical as it is located right where you are already waiting for the boat.
If you want a proper lunch and a few hours of relaxation by the beach, Porat makes more sense.
In Porat, there are sandy beaches and taverns like Kod Jakše and Konoba Tomić, making it easier to organise lunch as part of a full-day stay.
Le Grand Bleu therefore serves a different function – a short break in Mezuporat, rather than a gastronomic destination for the entire trip.
Is it suitable for families with children?
Yes, especially as parents with children have a place to sit and get a drink or a simple snack while waiting.
Mezuporat also has a small stretch of coast where one can spend a short time by the sea.
If you want a few hours of proper swimming with children, Porat is a much better choice after visiting the Blue Cave due to its sandy beach and long shallow area.
Is a reservation necessary?
For a regular coffee, drink, or sandwich, reservations do not make much sense.
Le Grand Bleu primarily operates as a daytime establishment through which visitors to the Blue Cave pass.
During the peak summer crowds, several tables may be occupied at once, especially when larger excursion groups arrive in Mezuporat.
If a classic reserved lunch on Biševo is desired, it is better to arrange a table in one of the taverns in Porat in advance.
A practical stop by Biševo's most famous attraction
Le Grand Bleu is not a destination in itself for which one travels specifically to Biševo, but due to its location by the Blue Cave, it can be a very practical part of the trip.
You arrive by boat in Mezuporat, take a number for the tour, sit down for a coffee or cold drink, and wait for the small boat that takes you to the cave.
After returning, you can decide whether to head back to Komiža or continue to the sandy beaches of Porat and Salbunara.
This is how Le Grand Bleu should be viewed best – as a simple café and a place to rest by the departure point for the Blue Cave, rather than a classic island tavern.
