Kamenice Beach in Komiža
Kamenice Beach is situated on the southern side of Komiža, approximately a ten to fifteen-minute leisurely walk from the central promenade. It is close enough to reach on foot without difficulty, yet sufficiently distanced from the houses, harbour, and the busiest town beaches. This is one of those places where one can spend an entire afternoon, swim, find shade under the pines, and remain until sunset.
Kamenice is a pebble beach, larger than Lučica and many smaller bathing spots along the Komiža coast. Behind the shore lies a pine forest, while dark rocks continue along the edges of the beach, making this part of Komiža easily recognisable. During the day, families, couples, and visitors seeking a swim close to the town come here, and in the evening, the beach takes on a livelier character due to the bar and occasional summer events.
Beach Conditions and Sea Access
The main part of Kamenice is covered with fine to medium-sized pebbles. The easiest access to the sea is in the middle of the beach, avoiding the need to climb over rocks or navigate steep descents. The seabed near the shore is mostly pebbly and rocky, with a gradual increase in depth, making the beach suitable for families with children and swimmers who prefer an easier entry into the water.
At the ends of the shore, the coastline becomes rockier. These areas are quieter and interesting for snorkelling, but care should be taken when entering as the rocks can be slippery. Footwear is not necessary on the central part of the beach, but it may be useful for children and anyone who finds walking on stones uncomfortable.
The beach faces the bay of Komiža and the open sea. When the weather is calm, the water at Kamenice is usually very pleasant for swimming. However, stronger westerly winds can create waves, so caution is advised, especially near the rocky edges.
Shade Under the Pines
One of the greatest advantages of Kamenice is the pine forest immediately behind the beach. Under the trees, one can find natural shade for a good part of the day, which is not common on all Komiža beaches. The best spots beneath the pines tend to fill up quickly during July and August, so arriving early is advisable for a longer stay.
The open part of the shore is exposed to the sun, especially later in the day. Although there is shade in the background, it is still wise to bring sun protection for children and for those planning to stay all day. The ground under the pines is earthy and rocky, while closer to the sea, one lies on pebbles.
Water Source and Unique Rocks
Kamenice is also known for the cold water that appears at certain spots along the sea's edge. The beach's name is associated with stone depressions where spring water once collected. Before Komiža had a modern water supply, such springs were important to the locals and sailors.
Along the beach, darker rocks can be seen, differing from the usual light limestone found along the Adriatic coast. These are part of the volcanic history of the Komiža area and give Kamenice its distinctive appearance. There is no need to specifically visit the geological site – the rocks are naturally visible during walks along the beach and while swimming at its edges.
Facilities at the Beach
During the tourist season, a beach bar operates at Kamenice, where one can order coffee, cold drinks, and other simple summer offerings. In the evenings, musical programmes and entertainment are occasionally held there, making the atmosphere significantly livelier than in the morning.
The schedule of events and opening hours change throughout the season, so it is advisable to check them before visiting. Outside of summer, one should not expect the bar to be open.
For a peaceful family swim, it is best to arrive in the morning or early afternoon. Those who prefer drinks, music, and a more vibrant atmosphere can stay until the evening. Therefore, Kamenice offers two quite different moods throughout the same day – a quieter town beach during the day and a popular evening gathering spot in the season.
How to Reach Kamenice
From the centre of Komiža, head south along the coast towards Lučica Beach. After Lučica, continue through the southern part of the settlement and along Put Kamenica towards the town's exit. Expect a walk of approximately ten to fifteen minutes from the main promenade to the beach.
The path is not demanding, and hiking boots are not necessary. Most of it follows a paved local road, while the final approach to the beach is via a well-maintained path. In the summer heat, walking is more pleasant early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
For guests staying in Komiža, using a car is generally impractical as the beach is quicker and easier to reach on foot.
Arriving by Car and Parking
It is possible to drive to the area above and behind the beach, but there is no large designated parking area at Kamenice. The number of spaces along the local road is limited and fills up quickly during the summer. Vehicles may only be left where they do not obstruct traffic, access to houses, or the beach.
When there are no available legal parking spots nearby, it is more practical to park in one of the public car parks in Komiža and continue on foot. Arriving by car does not offer a significant advantage as the streets in this part of town are narrow, and the beach is not far from the centre.
Is the Beach Suitable for Children?
Kamenice is a good choice for families with children due to the pebbly shore, easier access to the sea, and shade under the pines. The beach offers more space than smaller bathing spots closer to the centre, making it easier to find a spot for towels and children's equipment.
However, small children should be supervised, especially near the rocky edges and when the sea is choppy. In the evenings, when musical programmes are held, the beach can become noisier and livelier, making it more suitable for adults and younger visitors than for families seeking peace.
The access is not particularly demanding for older individuals, but moving over the pebbles can be tricky. For those using wheelchairs, reaching the edge of the beach may be possible with assistance, but the shore itself is not fully accessible.
The Best Time to Visit
For swimming, shade, and a calmer atmosphere, it is best to arrive in the morning. Late afternoons see Kamenice becoming sunnier, but at that time, the western sky and sunset over the sea can be beautifully viewed from the beach. Early evening is one of the most pleasant times to visit, especially when swimming is to be combined with drinks by the beach.
Kamenice is accessible year-round, but the hospitality offerings and evening events are tied to the summer season. Outside of summer, the beach is completely tranquil and suitable for walks, while from June to September, it is one of the most popular swimming spots on the southern side of Komiža.
Kamenice Beach is a good choice for guests who wish to stay close to the town while still spending a day by the sea in the shade of the pines. The pebbly shore, interesting rocks, cold spring water, and views of the sunset give it a character that sets it apart from other beaches in Komiža.
