Caffe Bar Karoca Gre in Komiža
Caffe Bar Karoca Gre is situated on Škoro, in the old centre of Komiža, just a few steps from the waterfront. It is not located on a wide open terrace by the sea, but rather in a cosy corner of the town among stone houses, from where the view opens up towards the harbour, boats, and the houses on the opposite side of the bay. This position is its greatest advantage – it is close enough to the sea and all the activity at the waterfront, yet slightly tucked away from the busiest thoroughfare.
This is a convenient spot for a morning coffee before heading to the beach or embarking on a boat trip, but Karoca Gre is not just a daytime café. Later in the day, the terrace becomes a pleasant place for a cold drink, and in the evening, gin and tonics, cocktails, wine, and beer are in higher demand. The atmosphere is informal and more local than polished for tourists, making it suitable for those who wish to sit in the heart of the town without feeling like they have ended up in a typical venue aimed solely at summer visitors.
Coffee in the Morning, Drinks in the Evening
The menu focuses on drinks, so Karoca Gre should not be planned as a place for a full lunch or dinner. In the morning, it is most commonly visited for coffee, while throughout the day, standard soft drinks, beer, wine, aperitifs, and spirits are offered. Various combinations of gin and tonic and cocktails are particularly noteworthy, making the bar a good choice for an evening drink after a stroll around Komiža.
It is advisable to arrive a bit earlier for a table on the terrace during summer evenings. The space is not large, and its central location means that seats fill up quickly when people return from the beach and excursions. In the morning, the atmosphere is calmer, making it the most pleasant time to sit with a coffee, especially before larger groups of day visitors start to arrive along the waterfront.
Karoca Gre is not a typical seasonal beach bar that closes as soon as summer ends. The establishment remains active outside the main season, occasionally hosting pub quizzes and other smaller gatherings. However, the opening hours vary throughout the year, so it is advisable to check before visiting outside of summer.
Location in the Old Part of Komiža
Škoro is a small area in old Komiža, right next to the main waterfront and a network of narrow stone streets. From the bar, the view is not towards the open sea as it is from the beaches on the edge of the town, but rather towards the daily life of the harbour – fishing boats, passers-by, and the houses that line the Komiža bay.
It takes about two to three minutes to walk from Komuna and the central part of the waterfront to Karoca Gre. There are no steep inclines or long walks, and access to the bar is through a well-maintained part of the old town. The stone surface can be slightly uneven in places, but the approach is not demanding and does not require special footwear.
The location is also practical for guests waiting for an excursion boat, returning from the beach, or wanting to take a break while exploring old Komiža. Nearby, there are restaurants, a patisserie, shops, and other cafés, making a visit easy to fit into the rest of the day without special planning.
Arriving by Car and Parking
It is neither necessary nor practical to drive directly to the bar. Karoca Gre is located in the narrow old centre, where the streets are tight, traffic is restricted, and available spaces along the waterfront are very rare. The bar does not have its own parking for visitors.
It is best to leave your vehicle in one of the public car parks above the narrow centre of Komiža and continue on foot. Depending on the chosen car park, it takes about five to ten minutes to walk to the bar. During July and August, it is advisable to arrive early as public car parks fill up quickly.
For guests staying in Komiža, using a car is not practical. Most accommodation in the centre, the harbour, the town beach, and evening activities are within a pleasant walking distance.
Who is Karoca Gre Best Suited For?
The bar is a good choice for couples, small groups, and anyone looking for coffee or a drink in the old part of Komiža. It is also suitable for families with children, especially in the morning and during the day, but in the evening, the space naturally takes on a more bar-like character.
Access should not be difficult for older individuals as there are no long flights of stairs or steep inclines. Those with limited mobility will find it easiest to approach from the direction of the waterfront, although due to the stone pavement and the arrangement of tables, one should not expect completely unobstructed movement without assistance.
The most pleasant time for a morning visit is before the peak daily crowds, while for a cocktail or gin and tonic, early evening is a good choice. Karoca Gre is particularly suited to those who do not seek a loud club or large hospitality complex, but rather a small bar where one can sit in the heart of the town and observe the daily rhythm of Komiža.
