Kupinovac Beach near Komiža
Kupinovac Beach is located at the southernmost part of the Komiža Bay, following a series of smaller coves that extend beyond Kamenica, Nova Pošta, Pizdica, Veli Žal, and Utlica. Although it is not far from the centre of Komiža when viewed across the sea, it is not accessible via a casual walk along the coast. Kupinovac is a secluded natural bathing spot that requires arranging a boat or setting off in a smaller vessel.
The cove is entirely different from the urban beaches in Komiža. There are no houses directly by the shore, no bars, no paved promenades, and fewer bathers arriving on foot. Behind the beach rises a steep green slope, and from the sea, one can see a narrow natural pebble beach nestled between the rocky sides of the cove. This unique location makes Kupinovac most suitable for those seeking a few peaceful hours by the clear sea, away from the town's waterfront and summer crowds.
Natural Coastline and Sea Entry
The beach consists of natural curves, larger stones, and sections of rocky coastline. One should not expect a flat, well-maintained shore like Gusarica or Kamenica. The easiest entry into the water is from the more accessible central part, while the edges of the cove feature larger stones and rocks.
The seabed along the coast is also rocky, with depth gradually increasing. Water shoes are a good choice, especially when getting out of the boat and walking on larger pebbles. In calm weather, the water in the cove is very clear, and the rocky edges are suitable for snorkelling and exploring the underwater world.
Space for comfortable lounging is limited and not entirely flat. A towel can be most easily placed on areas with finer pebbles, while a thicker beach mat is practical for longer stays.
Shade and Time Without Direct Sunlight
Due to the high slope behind Kupinovac, part of the day remains in shadow. This is pleasant during the hottest summer days, but it may not be the best choice for visitors wishing to sunbathe from early morning. The position of the shade changes depending on the time of year and the section of the beach, so it is advisable to bring sun protection.
There is greenery in the hinterland, but one should not rely on a wide and reliable shade from pine forests along the entire shore. Conditions on natural beaches like this can vary, and finding a free spot under vegetation is not always practical or safe for sitting.
How to Reach Kupinovac
The simplest way to reach the beach is by boat from the Komiža harbour. A ride on a faster taxi boat takes about five minutes, while a smaller vessel may take a bit longer, depending on speed, wind, and sea conditions. Transport should be arranged in advance, along with the return time.
Upon arrival, there is no established port or reliable mooring available in all conditions. Disembarkation occurs directly along the natural coastline, at a spot chosen by the boat operator on that day. When the sea is not calm, getting out of the vessel can be tricky, so it is better to postpone the visit than to insist on docking.
There is no confirmed and established walking path from Komiža to the beach. Although old paths and natural terrain exist above the cove, official city documentation lists Kupinovac Veli and Mali as beaches accessible only by sea. Therefore, walking access should not be recommended to tourists as a reliable route.
Arriving by Car and Parking
It is not possible to drive directly to the beach, and there is no parking along the cove. Vehicles should be left in a permitted public parking area in Komiža, and from there, one must continue on foot to the harbour. A taxi boat can then be arranged, or one may set off in their own vessel.
There is little point in attempting to approach the cove via unpaved roads from the hinterland. These are not maintained as tourist road access to the beach, and the final descent to the shore is not suitable for ordinary cars.
Facilities and Staying at the Beach
There are no tourist facilities at the location. It is essential to bring enough water, food, towels, sun protection, and anything else needed until the arranged return of the boat.
Do not rely on a water source, even if fresh water appears in some of the wider areas of certain Komiža coves. All waste should be taken away, as there are no bins or organised waste collection on the beach.
Before leaving Komiža, it is wise to confirm the return time once more. Mobile signal is generally available, but in a secluded location, it is not advisable to rely solely on a last-minute call.
Is Kupinovac Suitable for Children?
Kupinovac can be a pleasant choice for families with older children who can safely enter and exit a smaller boat and are accustomed to rocky shores. The sea and tranquillity of the cove are its greatest advantages, but parents must consider the lack of facilities, uneven ground, and the inability to return quickly on foot.
For small children, the beach is not among the most practical options. Disembarkation, larger pebbles, and the lack of flat space make it difficult to stay with pushchairs and a larger amount of equipment.
The location is not suitable for individuals using wheelchairs. For older adults and those with reduced mobility, getting out of the boat onto the natural rocky shore can also be challenging.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to set off is in the morning, when the sea is often calm and there are not many vessels passing through Komiža Bay. As the slope shades part of the day, the cove remains pleasant even when the town beaches are already quite hot.
Later in the afternoon, Kupinovac receives more sunlight and offers a lovely view towards the western part of the bay. However, it is advisable to arrange the return early enough, before sea conditions change or darkness falls.
The beach is natural and accessible year-round, but visiting by boat is most practical from late spring to early autumn, when the sea is calm and the forecast is stable. Outside the main season, it is advisable to check in advance whether transport can be arranged.
Kupinovac is not a beach one visits for facilities and comfort. It is worth choosing for its secluded position, clear waters, and the feeling of completely escaping the bustling Komiža within just a few minutes' boat ride.
