Mala Pritišćina – a hidden miniature beach on Vis
Mala Pritišćina is one of the smallest and most distinctive coves on the southern coast of the island of Vis. It is located just west of Velika Pritišćina, beneath the area of Podhumlje, but unlike the larger neighbouring beach, there is no road or established footpath leading to it. The narrow cove is deeply carved between the rocks, and at its end, there is only a small pebble beach. Due to its location and difficult access, Mala Pritišćina still feels completely isolated from the rest of the island.
The water in the cove is exceptionally clear, taking on bright turquoise hues, especially when the sun shines on the shallow area in front of the beach. The high bare cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation above create an almost canyon-like appearance, making Mala Pritišćina appealing even to those who come for a brief swim while exploring the southern coast by boat.
How to reach Mala Pritišćina
The simplest and safest way to get there is by sea. The cove can be accessed by a small boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP), and Mala Pritišćina is also featured as a stop on some boat tours around the island of Vis. Due to the very limited space along the shore, a large number of vessels and bathers can quickly change the experience of the cove, so it is most pleasant to arrive earlier in the day or outside of the peak summer crowds.
An alternative option is to arrive via Velika Pritišćina. By car, one can first reach Velika Pritišćina via an unpaved road, and from there, continue to Mala by sea. The two coves are only a few hundred metres apart, but there is a rocky coastline between them without a designated path.
It is also possible to swim from Velika Pritišćina. The route goes around a rocky point and partly along a more open coastline, and according to visitors' experiences, the swim takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This is not an option for inexperienced swimmers, small children, or on days when the wind is blowing and there are waves. There are no spots along this stretch where one can easily exit the water if they become tired, so for most visitors, a kayak, SUP, or small boat is a better choice.
What is the beach like?
The beach itself is very small and pebbly. Depending on the sea conditions and the amount of pebbles washed in or taken away by the waves, the space for lying down can be quite limited. For this reason, it is not ideal to think of Mala Pritišćina as a beach where a larger group will spend the entire day, but rather as a small hidden cove for swimming, snorkelling, and a shorter stay. Some tourist sources even describe it as one of the smallest beaches on Vis.
The cliffs drop almost directly into the sea, making the cove particularly interesting for exploration with a mask and snorkel. Due to its narrow shape, part of the beach may receive shade from the surrounding rocks during the day, but this should not be relied upon as a constant natural shade.
At Mala Pritišćina, there are no beach bars, restaurants, toilets, showers, sun loungers, or any other tourist facilities. If planning to stay longer, visitors should bring their own water, food, and sun protection.
Mala or Velika Pritišćina?
Velika Pritišćina is a better choice if you wish to arrive by car, have more space on the beach, and spend several hours there. Mala Pritišćina offers a different experience – much smaller, more enclosed among the rocks, and practically accessible from the sea. For this reason, it is worth considering them as two separate beaches, even though they are located right next to each other.
If you have a kayak or small boat, it is very easy to connect the two in one outing. Those who arrive at Velika Pritišćina by car should carefully assess the conditions before swimming to Mala. In calm seas, the distance is not great for a good swimmer, but the return journey is equally long and takes place along a rocky, partly open coastline.
Mala Pritišćina is not a beach one visits for comfort and amenities. It is valued for its very small beach, the cliffs that almost enclose the cove, and the feeling of having reached a part of the Vis coast that is difficult to see from land. For those exploring the southern side of Vis by sea, it is one of the more interesting short stops among the numerous hidden coves in this part of the island.
