Novo Pošta Beach in Komiža
Novo Pošta Beach is situated on the southern side of the Komiža bay, a few hundred metres from Kamenice. Although it is only about a twenty-minute walk from the centre of Komiža, the final approach sufficiently separates it from the town's beaches and the usual summer crowds. There are no houses along the shore, no loud bars, nor a well-maintained promenade. Visitors come here for the clear sea, natural pebble beach, and a quieter swimming experience on the outskirts of the settlement.
Novo Pošta is more suited to visitors who are willing to navigate a somewhat challenging final stretch than to those seeking a beach accessible with pushchairs and all their gear. A short trip from Komiža does not require special planning, but it is advisable to understand the access route beforehand and bring everything needed for the stay.
Pebble Shore and Sea Entry
The beach consists of a natural pebble shore, with rocky and stony sections at both ends. The pebbles vary in size, so some areas may have larger stones and uneven ground. A slightly thicker mat is practical for lying down, especially if planning to stay for several hours.
The easiest entry into the sea is from the central part of the shore. The seabed near the shore is pebbly and rocky, with a gradual increase in depth, avoiding a sudden drop right at the water's edge. Water shoes are not mandatory but can be useful due to the rocks, particularly when approaching from the coastal path and entering at the edges of the beach.
The water is very clear in calm weather, and the rocky areas of the bay are good for snorkelling. In this part of the Komiža bay, freshwater springs appear along the coast, so there may be cooler layers in the sea at certain spots.
Shade and Sun at the Beach
In the hinterland and along the edges of the beach, Mediterranean vegetation grows, and some natural shade can be found in certain areas. However, Novo Pošta Beach does not have a wide pine forest under which one can rely on shade throughout the day.
A large part of the shore remains exposed to the sun during the day, so for a longer stay, it is necessary to bring sun protection and enough water. The most pleasant time to arrive is in the morning when temperatures are lower and it is easier to find a spot closer to greenery.
Later in the afternoon, the sun continues to reach most of the shore, which suits those who wish to stay on the beach until early evening. However, the return to Komiža should begin while there is still sufficient daylight, as the final coastal path is not illuminated.
Walking Access from Komiža
From the centre of Komiža, head towards the southern side of the harbour, passing along Lučica Beach and continuing towards Vartalac and Kamenice. The walk to Kamenice is along town streets and a local road, without any particularly demanding ascents.
After Kamenice, the well-maintained town path ends, and the route to Novo Pošta Beach continues along a more natural coastal path. The final section is not a classic promenade. You will encounter rocks, a stony surface, and a narrow passage along the sea. Depending on the sea level and waves, it may be necessary to wade through shallow water or carefully navigate around the rocks in certain areas.
There is also an access path from above, but it is steeper, more uneven, and less practical for visitors unfamiliar with the terrain. It is easiest to first reach Kamenice and then assess the condition of the coastal path. When the sea is rough, the final section can be slippery and uncomfortable, so it is better to plan the visit for a calmer day.
From the main waterfront to the beach, expect approximately a twenty-minute walk, depending on your pace and chosen route. Sturdy sandals or lightweight sports shoes are a better choice than ordinary flip-flops, which can only be worn after arriving at the shore.
Driving and Parking
It is possible to drive to the southern part of Komiža and the area above Kamenice, but there is no paved road leading directly to Novo Pošta Beach. There is no public parking along the shore, nor is there space to leave a vehicle immediately by the water.
Parking spaces along the local roads in this part of Komiža are very limited and may only be used where parking is not prohibited and where access to houses is not blocked. During the peak season, it is unwise to rely on finding a free spot near Kamenice.
For visitors already staying in Komiža, walking is the more practical option. If coming from another part of the island of Vis, it is safer to leave the car in a public parking area in the town and continue to the beach without searching for a spot on the narrow local road.
Arriving by Boat
Novo Pošta Beach can also be reached by a small boat or a pre-arranged taxi boat from Komiža. The journey is not long, but there is no established port or secure mooring along the beach that can be relied upon in all conditions.
Disembarkation occurs along the natural pebble or rocky shore, at the discretion of the person operating the vessel. When strong winds blow or waves rise in the bay, the approach can be uncomfortable. Therefore, transport and return times should be arranged in advance, rather than relying on a call at the end of the day.
Arriving by boat can be convenient for visitors wishing to avoid the rocky walking access, but even then, one should not expect an easy disembarkation as one would at a well-equipped dock.
Facilities at the Beach
There are no tourist facilities at the location. There is no beach bar, shop, shower, toilet, or rental of sun loungers and umbrellas. Everything needed should be brought from Komiža, including water, food, and sun protection.
The nearest seasonal hospitality facility is located at Kamenice, but it is not close enough to visit without crossing the coastal path again. All waste after your stay should be taken away with you.
Due to its secluded location, naturists may also be found at the beach, so it is important to be aware that it is a mixed-use area and to behave considerately towards other visitors. Novo Pošta is not officially designated as a separate nudist beach.
Who is Novo Pošta Beach Best Suited For?
The beach is a good choice for couples, solo visitors, and confident swimmers looking for a quieter spot not far from Komiža. It is also suitable for older children who are accustomed to walking on rocky shores, but constant supervision is necessary during the final approach.
For families with small children, it is not among the most practical beaches in Komiža. The issue is not just swimming, but also carrying equipment over the rocks, the lack of facilities, and the return along the same path. Gusarica and Kamenice are simpler options when easy access, shade, and proximity to hospitality facilities are important.
Novo Pošta Beach is not suitable for pushchairs, wheelchair users, or visitors who struggle to maintain balance on uneven surfaces. For older individuals, arriving by boat may be easier than walking, but even then, one must consider disembarking without a proper dock.
Best Time to Visit
The most pleasant time to set off is in the morning when the walk from Komiža is easier, the sea is often calm, and the sun has not yet heated the entire shore. In July and August, it is advisable to avoid walking during the hottest part of the day.
Late afternoon, the beach remains pleasant for swimming, but the return should begin before dusk. The coastal path between Kamenice and Novo Pošta Beach is not illuminated, and wet rocks can be slippery.
The beach can be visited year-round, but for swimming and safe passage along the sea, the most practical period is from late spring to early autumn, with stable weather forecasts.
Novo Pošta will not suit those expecting a well-maintained bathing area, a wide range of facilities, and easy access by car. It is a good choice when one wishes to stay close to Komiža while still finding a more natural and tranquil shore where the town's bustle is hardly felt.
