Pritišćina Beach – A Hidden Pebble Cove Beneath Podhumlje
Pritišćina Beach is situated on the southern coast of the island of Vis, beneath the settlement of Podhumlje, in an area belonging to Komiža. It lies at the end of a small cove surrounded by rocky slopes and Mediterranean vegetation, far from settlements and the main island roads. Access is possible by land, but the last few kilometres are along a gravel road, indicating that this is one of the more secluded beaches in this part of Vis. The Komiža Tourist Board includes Pritišćina among the beaches of the Komiža area.
The beach commonly referred to simply as Pritišćina is actually known as Velika Pritišćina. At the end of the cove, there is a natural pebble shore, while rocky areas on both sides are suitable for sunbathing and entering the water. The sea is very clear, and the rocky edges of the cove are interesting for swimming and snorkelling.
How to Reach Pritišćina Beach
From the direction of Komiža, take the main road inland towards Podhumlje, after which you will turn towards the southern coast. From the turn-off to Pritišćina, there is approximately 3.5 kilometres of gravel road that descends from about 270 metres above sea level down to the coastal area. Allow at least fifteen minutes for this part of the drive and do not rush.
The gravel track is mostly narrow, and in some places, two vehicles cannot pass each other without using widening areas. The condition of the road may change after winter, rain, and during the season, so extra caution is required if driving a low vehicle. An off-road vehicle is not strictly necessary in good conditions, but this route is not suitable for drivers who find several kilometres of narrow island gravel challenging.
Near the end of the road, there is a larger widening area used for turning around and parking. The final part of the descent is steeper, so a vehicle can be left a bit earlier if the driver does not wish to continue to the very end. After the road ends and past a few houses, it is a short walk to the beach. This is not a conventional organised and paid parking area, so care should be taken not to block access or space needed for turning around.
What the Beach is Like
Pritišćina is a natural pebble beach, with minimal alterations to the shoreline. The pebbles vary in size, and entering the water from the main shore is straightforward. The cove is characterised by rocky sides that enclose it and very clear water that, depending on the light, takes on bright blue and turquoise hues along the shore.
Visitors should not expect reliable natural shade throughout the day on the main part of the beach. There are also no facilities typical of organised urban beaches – there are no beach bars, restaurants, sunbed rentals, or other tourist offerings. For a few hours of stay, it is advisable to bring water, food, sun protection, and anything else needed for the day. Visitors regularly mention the absence of catering facilities as an important practical detail.
Due to the rocky edges and clear water, Pritišćina is also good for snorkelling. The cove is small enough to explore easily by swimming along the shore, but it should be noted that it is located on the open southern side of Vis, which can be affected by wind and waves.
Pritišćina can also be accessed by boat, which is often a simpler option than driving along the gravel road. For smaller vessels, the cove is appealing due to its natural surroundings and swimming opportunities, but care should always be taken regarding depth, other vessels, and sea conditions when approaching the shore.
In close proximity, there is also Mala Pritišćina, a much narrower and less accessible cove. Although the two locations are often presented together, they are distinct beaches, and Mala Pritišćina merits a separate visit and description.
Pritišćina is a good choice for those seeking a quieter beach on Vis without cafes, sunbeds, and the crowds typical of easily accessible bathing spots. One must accept a few kilometres of gravel road and bring everything needed for a stay, but in return, you arrive at a small pebble cove that remains strongly defined by the natural landscape of the southern coast of Vis.
