Šporku žolo Beach in Komiža
Šporku žolo is situated at the northern edge of Komiža harbour, only a few minutes' walk from the waterfront. It is the closest proper pebble beach to the centre of Komiža, located right in front of the old stone houses. Fishing boats are often pulled up on the shore, and small moorings are found in the sea in front of the beach, meaning that swimming and the daily life of the harbour share the same space.
This is not a beach where one typically spends the entire day. It is more suited for a quick morning swim, a refreshing dip after a stroll, or a last swim before dinner. Its advantage lies in the fact that it can be reached without a car, long walks, or carrying large supplies, while shops, cafés, and restaurants are just a few minutes away.
What does the name Šporku žolo actually mean?
The name is a local dialect expression that could be translated as "dirty beach", but it should not be taken literally. The beach did not receive its name because it is unusable or littered with waste, but rather because it is located by the harbour, among boats, ropes, and traces of everyday coastal use. Compared to secluded beaches outside the town, it does not appear untouched, but swimming here is perfectly normal.
This somewhat unusual name is part of its character. Šporku žolo is not a touristy setup, but a piece of old Komiža where boats are as important as beach towels.
Pebble beach in front of stone houses
The beach consists of several connected pebbly sections right by the houses. The pebbles vary in size, with some areas being finer and others coarser, so a thicker mat is useful for longer lounging. The space is not large, and a small boat may occupy part of the beach.
When laying down towels, it is important to leave clear access for the boats and pathways to the houses. The ropes, pulleys, and other equipment are not tourist props; they are in regular use. For this reason, Šporku žolo is not the best choice for large groups, inflatables, and a lot of beach gear.
It is most pleasant to come with just the essentials. When more space is desired for a full day’s stay, Gusarica is a more practical option, while Šporku žolo is much better for spontaneous swimming without special planning.
Entry into the sea and swimming by the harbour
Entry into the sea is directly over the pebbles. The water is shallow near the shore, with a bottom of pebbles and rocks. The entry is not particularly challenging, but care should be taken regarding ropes and moorings that may be in the water in front of the beach. Water shoes are not necessary, although they can be helpful for children and more sensitive swimmers.
As the beach is located at the edge of the harbour, it is wise to check for approaching boats before entering and to choose a spot without mooring ropes. It is advisable not to swim among the moorings or venture out towards the middle of the harbour. For a peaceful swim, it is sufficient to stay close to the shore, where the area is clearer and it is easier to spot the movement of boats.
The sea is most pleasant early in the morning, before the larger boat traffic begins. At this time, the surface is calmer, the beach is almost empty, and the sun is not yet strong. After strong winds or increased traffic in the harbour, the water may be less clear than at more open Komiža beaches, so Šporku žolo shows its advantages best in stable and calm weather.
Shade depends on the time of day
There are no pine trees or other significant natural shade on the beach. Some shade is provided by the houses and walls along the beach, but this moves throughout the day. In certain spots by the houses, shade can be found in the earlier or later hours, while the open pebbly area is exposed to the sun during midday.
Due to the limited space, a large sun umbrella is not always practical. Therefore, Šporku žolo is better suited for shorter stays rather than extended lounging in the strongest summer sun.
How to get there from the Komiža waterfront
From the main waterfront, head towards the northern side of the harbour, through the old part of Komiža and along the houses lining the coast. The beach can be reached in approximately three to five minutes of easy walking, without any serious inclines or long paths. Šporku žolo is officially listed as the beach closest to the Komiža waterfront.
The access is straightforward for most visitors, but the transition to the pebbles is not equipped as an accessible ramp. For those with limited mobility, the uneven stone surface and pebbles may pose a challenge, while lightweight pushchairs can be brought close, but it is not practical to push them on the beach itself.
Arriving by car and parking
There is little point in driving to Šporku žolo. The beach is located in the old, densely built part of Komiža, where the streets are narrow, and parking spaces near the houses are generally not intended for beachgoers.
It is best to leave the vehicle in a public car park in Komiža and continue on foot to the beach. Even when a spot is found closer to the centre, the final part of the journey is certainly easier without a car.
Facilities on and near the beach
There are no tourist facilities at the location. There are no beach bars, showers, toilets, changing cabins, or rentals of sun loungers and umbrellas.
This is not a significant drawback as the centre of Komiža is immediately nearby. Shops, bakeries, cafés, and restaurants can be reached in just a few minutes, so there is no need to carry food and large amounts of water. It is precisely this proximity that makes Šporku žolo practical for a quick swim.
Is the beach suitable for children?
Children may find the pebbly entry and shallow initial area suitable, but care should be taken regarding boats, ropes, and mooring equipment. There is not much space for play on the beach, and entry into the sea is not separated from the harbour area.
For a short swim with a child who is constantly supervised, Šporku žolo can be quite practical, especially if staying nearby. For a full day, more space and a relaxed family stay, Gusarica or one of the larger Komiža beaches would be a better choice.
A beach for a quick swim in old Komiža
Šporku žolo should not be compared to secluded coves and beaches that are accessed by boat. Its value lies in a completely different type of experience: from the narrow stone streets, one can descend to the pebbles in just a few minutes, leave a towel between the old houses, and swim among the boats that have been part of the same scene for decades.
It is best early in the morning or in the evening when there is not much movement in the harbour and when one can enter the sea calmly without a full day of preparation. This is not a beach one visits for facilities, spaciousness, or complete solitude, but simply a practical urban beach with genuine Komiža character.
