Zanchi Palace – Zonkotov Paloc in Komiža

Zanchi Palace, referred to locally as Zonkotov Paloc, is one of the more intriguing historical houses in the old part of Komiža. It is situated on a small square close to the harbour and the port captaincy, making it easily accessible on foot during a stroll through the centre of Komiža.

This Baroque three-storey building was constructed at the end of the 17th century. The palace is associated with Antun Zanchi, who, according to historical sources, was likely a knight and the castellan of the Komiža fortress. The house was built in a considerably more lavish style than most of the traditional stone houses surrounding it, which is why it still stands out in the old town centre.

The most interesting details are best viewed from the square. A long stone balcony is prominent on the façade, with a small niche above it housing a statue of the Virgin Mary. Particularly unusual are the roof lanterns adorned with slender stone pyramids and spheres, along with a decorative chimney. Attention should also be paid to the clay rainwater drainage ends shaped like dragon heads – a feature that gives Zanchi Palace a very distinctive appearance.

The palace is not a standalone monumental building that requires a special trip to visit. Its value lies in its location among the houses, squares, and narrow streets of old Komiža. It is best included in a walk along the waterfront and through the historic core, alongside the nearby Kaštel Komuna and the Fishing Museum.

Zanchi House is officially protected as a cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia. For visitors to Komiža, it is interesting as one of the few examples of more opulent Baroque residential architecture in the area and as a detail that reveals the rich civic history behind the well-known fishing image of Komiža.
