Stončica Beach, Vis – A Sandy Beach with a Long Shallow Area
Stončica Beach is located on the northeastern side of the island of Vis, at the end of the long Stončica bay. It is one of the few genuine sandy beaches on Vis, particularly noted for its very shallow waters, natural shade, and relaxed atmosphere. For this reason, Stončica is one of the best choices on the island for families with young children. The official Tourist Board of Vis describes it as the only sandy beach on the northern coast of the island.
The beach is not large, but it is wide enough for a comfortable all-day stay. The shore is predominantly sandy, occasionally mixed with finer pebbles, while the seabed is mostly sandy as well. Consequently, the water along the shore is light and very clear, gradually deepening into deeper blue shades as one moves towards the middle of the bay.
Very Shallow Water – An Excellent Choice for Children
The most distinctive feature of Stončica is not just the sand but the exceptionally long shallow area. In some parts, one must walk more than 40 metres from the shore for the depth to reach approximately one metre.
This means that small children have ample space to play in the shallow water, which warms up quickly during the summer. For parents, Stončica is considerably more practical than many other beaches on Vis where the depth begins almost immediately at the shore.
Those primarily interested in swimming in deeper water will need to venture further from the shore, but it is precisely this long sandy shallow that sets this beach apart from most others on Vis.
Sea urchins may appear along the rocky edges of the bay, so it is advisable to wear water shoes when exploring those areas. The main sandy entrance poses significantly less of a problem.
Is There Shade at Stončica?
Yes, and this is another significant advantage of the beach. On the western side, several palms grow, while on the eastern side, tamarisks and other Mediterranean vegetation provide shade. The official Tourist Board of Vis cites the natural shade as one of the reasons why Stončica is so popular among families.
However, the beach is not entirely covered by dense forest like some other beaches on Vis. The best shaded spots tend to fill up quickly in the summer, so if visiting in July or August and shade is important, it is worth arriving early.
How to Get to Stončica Beach?
Stončica is accessible by road from the town of Vis, and it takes approximately ten minutes by car. It is also connected by road to the Rukavac area, which is similarly about a ten-minute drive.
You cannot drive right down to the shore. Vehicles are parked above the bay, after which one continues on foot along a gravel path to the sea. The official Tourist Board states that it takes less than ten minutes to walk from the end of the road access to the beach.
The descent is not long, but one should account for the uphill return, which can feel more strenuous in the summer heat than the initial walk down. For a typical trip to the beach, hiking shoes are not necessary, but sturdy sandals or trainers are more comfortable than flip-flops if carrying more items.
Parking at Stončica
Parking is located above the bay, at the end of the road access. It is not a parking area just a few metres from the towel, so all beach items must be carried the last part on foot.
During the peak season, Stončica is very popular, especially among families, so available parking spaces can diminish during the middle of the day. Arriving in the morning has several advantages: it is easier to park, simpler to find a shaded spot, and it avoids the largest crowds at the relatively small beach.
Bar, Restaurant and Other Facilities
Unlike many more remote beaches on Vis, at Stončica, you do not need to bring everything with you.
A small beach bar is located right on the beach, and adjacent to the sea is Konoba Stončica, allowing visitors to stay on the beach throughout the day without returning to town for lunch or drinks.
The beach also features a volleyball court, which fits well with the wide and flat sandy area behind the sea.
There is a toilet available, but since this is a seasonal beach and the facilities primarily operate during the tourist season, it is not advisable to rely on all amenities being available outside the main season.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
For families with young children, the most pleasant time is in the morning, when it is easier to find shade, the beach is quieter, and the sun is not yet strong.
During July and August, Stončica can become quite crowded. The beach is smaller than the well-known wide bathing areas, and due to the sand and shallow water, it attracts a large number of families, so the difference between arriving in the morning and arriving in the middle of the day can be significant.
In June and September, the atmosphere is usually calmer, and the water remains pleasantly warm for extended swimming.
Stončica is One of the Best Family Beaches on Vis
Vis has more attractive beaches if one is looking for high cliffs, dramatic coves, or secluded spots that are difficult to reach. Stončica offers a completely different advantage – it is simply pleasant for an entire day by the sea.
The sandy bottom, dozens of metres of shallow water, natural shade, beach bar, tavern, and the ability to drive relatively close to the beach make it particularly practical for families. Children can spend a long time in the shallow water, and adults do not have to spend the entire day on rocky slabs or large pebbles, which dominate most of Vis.
Therefore, Stončica is not a beach worth visiting solely for its photogenic qualities. Its greatest value lies in the fact that it is one of the most pleasant and practical natural beaches on the island for longer stays, especially with children.
The lighthouse, fishermen's houses, nautical area, and the broader story of Stončica bay deserve a special visit and are best explored separately from the beach itself.
