Lola Konoba & Bar Vis – Dinner in a Hidden Mediterranean Garden

Lola Konoba & Bar is one of those places in the town of Vis that can easily be overlooked if one only focuses on the waterfront. It is located a few steps away from the sea, behind the stone houses in the town centre, and the true character of the venue is revealed only upon entering the hidden Mediterranean garden.

Instead of tables lined up along a busy promenade, here you dine among stone walls, trees, palms, and Mediterranean greenery. In the evening, discreet lights and candles are lit, creating an atmosphere that is much more intimate than a typical tavern by the waterfront.

The kitchen follows the same concept. Lola is not a place that merely repeats the standard Dalmatian menu of grilled fish, squid, and Swiss chard. It starts with Dalmatian and Vis ingredients, but combines them with modern Mediterranean cuisine, influences from Spain and the Middle East, and a more contemporary style of presentation.

A Hidden Garden in the Centre of Vis

The garden is likely the first thing that comes to mind after visiting Lola.

The venue is nestled among the old stone houses of Vis and does not immediately reveal how much space lies behind the entrance. Once inside, a green courtyard unfolds with various levels, stone walls, and tables arranged among the vegetation.

This creates the feeling of dining in a private Mediterranean garden, rather than in a restaurant practically in the town centre.

It is particularly pleasant after sunset. Throughout the evening, the garden is illuminated, music becomes part of the atmosphere, and the tables are sufficiently spaced apart so that the area does not feel like a large restaurant terrace.

Because of its ambience, Lola is a good choice for a dinner for two, as well as for a more special evening during a stay in Vis.

Dalmatian Cuisine, but Without a Classic Menu

Lola describes itself as a gastro tavern, which quite aptly explains its cuisine.

The foundation consists of local fish, seafood, vegetables, herbs, and seasonal ingredients, but the dishes are not limited to traditional recipes.

The current menu features combinations such as cuttlefish croquettes, octopus prepared Lola-style, fresh fish, handmade pasta, gnudi made from fresh cheese, or spiced lamb kofta.

Hummus, tahini, muhammara, aioli, various pestos, and other elements also appear, clearly indicating that the kitchen draws on a broader Mediterranean repertoire alongside Dalmatia.

The menu changes with the seasons and the availability of ingredients, which makes more sense here than to rely on a specific dish in advance.

Fish and Seafood Remain an Important Part of the Story

Although the approach is more modern, Lola has not lost its connection to the island.

Fresh fish and seafood are regularly an important part of the offerings, and the restaurant notes its collaboration with local fishermen. Therefore, checking the fish of the day makes much more sense when seated at the table than searching for it on a fixed menu.

Octopus and cuttlefish appear in more creative interpretations, while fish is paired with seasonal sides and sauces that stray from the typical formula of grilled fish, Swiss chard, and potatoes.

Those seeking a completely traditional fish tavern will find more suitable options in Vis.

However, for those wanting to see how local ingredients can be presented in modern Mediterranean cuisine, Lola is likely to be more appreciated.

Not Just a Restaurant for Fish Lovers

The menu is not limited to seafood.

Meat dishes such as lamb are also available, as well as more substantial vegetarian options that are not merely salads or grilled vegetables added for the sake of variety.

This is useful when dining with a group where not everyone wants to eat fish.

Lola is also suitable for ordering several smaller dishes to share, especially if one wishes to try different flavours instead of the classic starter-main course sequence.

This reflects the influence of Spanish tapas culture, which has been part of the restaurant's identity for years.

Cocktails Are Not Just an Addition to the Restaurant

Another important part of the name is Bar.

Lola has a proper cocktail programme, not just a few standard cocktails added to the end of the wine list. The signature cocktails are designed as part of the overall evening experience and fit well with the relaxed atmosphere of the garden.

For this reason, one can come here just for a drink, although dinner is the main reason most guests reserve a table.

After the meal, there is no need to leave immediately. It feels quite natural to stay in the garden for another cocktail or glass of wine.

Occasionally, live music evenings are organised, so the atmosphere can be livelier than during a typical restaurant dinner.

Wines from Vis Have Their Place

Alongside cocktails, the wine list is also important.

Lola particularly highlights Dalmatian and local winemakers, which is quite significant in Vis. The island has a long winemaking tradition, and vugava and plavac mali are natural choices to accompany dinner on the island.

If local wine is desired, it is worth asking what is currently available from Vis producers and which label pairs best with the selected dishes.

This is a better way to get to know Vis than automatically ordering a well-known international variety.

Lola Is Primarily a Dinner Venue

Unlike many cafes and bistros that operate from morning, Lola is oriented towards the evening.

It currently opens around 6 PM, and dinner is served in the evening.

This aligns well with the concept of the garden, which makes sense after the day’s heat has passed and the evening lights are turned on.

Therefore, Lola should not be planned as a place for a quick lunch between two beaches. It is better reserved for an evening when there is no rush and when one wishes to spend a bit more time at the table over a meal.

Reservations in Summer Are Advisable

For dinner during July and August, reservations are recommended.

The restaurant encourages table reservations, especially in the peak season, which makes sense as the garden is precisely why people come, and the number of tables is not unlimited.

If the aim is a dinner at a specific time or a special evening for two, I would not rely on a casual arrival during the busiest times.

Outside the peak season, the situation is more relaxed, but the operating schedule can also depend on the time of year.

A Few Minutes' Walk from the Waterfront

Lola is located in the centre of the town of Vis, but it is not directly on the coast.

From the waterfront, one enters among the old town houses and after a short walk arrives at the restaurant entrance.

This is actually an advantage. The garden is removed from the boats, passenger traffic, and the constant movement along the coast, making the evening atmosphere calmer.

If staying in the town of Vis, using a car to get to Lola makes little sense.

For guests coming from Rukavac, Milna, Rogačić, or other parts of the island, it is more practical to leave the car at the public parking area in the town and continue on foot to the restaurant. The streets around the old town centre are not places where one should expect easy parking right next to the restaurant on a summer evening.

A Good Option for a Special Evening in Vis

Lola is particularly a good choice when one wishes to take a break from everyday taverns during a holiday.

The ambience is special enough for a romantic dinner, celebration, or a quieter outing for two, but the restaurant is not stiff or overly formal.

In the garden, the island's relaxed vibe is still felt.

Due to the space, smaller weddings and private events are also held here, which is easy to understand when the garden is seen in the evening.

Lola or a Traditional Vis Tavern?

These are actually two different experiences.

For komiška pogača, gregada, or a completely traditional island dinner, it is better to seek a restaurant focused specifically on those recipes.

Lola is more interesting if one desires a modern interpretation of the Mediterranean, more smaller dishes, creative combinations of ingredients, signature cocktails, and dinner in an unusual setting.

It does not attempt to resemble an old fishing tavern, and that is precisely why it has its own identity.

A Hidden Garden Worth Finding

In a town where most of the dining scene is naturally oriented towards the waterfront, Lola is proof that one of the most interesting places can be found behind a stone wall and a few streets from the sea.

The Mediterranean garden gives the restaurant an atmosphere that is hard to replace with a classic terrace, while the kitchen uses local ingredients more freely than a traditional tavern.

When cocktails, Vis and Dalmatian wines, and evening music are added to the mix, it becomes a place where it makes sense to spend the entire evening, rather than just having a meal.

For guests seeking a pleasant ambience, creative Mediterranean cuisine, and something different from the standard island tavern, Lola Konoba & Bar is one of the most interesting choices in the town.
