Prirovo Beach, Vis – City Beach in the Shade of Tamarisks
Prirovo Beach is the main city beach of Vis and one of the most convenient options for swimming if you are staying in the town itself. It is located on a small peninsula called Prirovo, just a ten-minute leisurely walk from the ferry port and the centre of Vis, so a car is not necessary to reach the sea.
The beach stretches approximately 100 metres along the northern side of the peninsula, with a shoreline made up of finer pebbles and rounded stones. Behind the beach, tamarisks and pines provide valuable natural shade, making it possible to stay here during the warmer parts of the day.
Prirovo is not a wild cove like Stiniva or Pritišćina. It is a well-maintained city beach, but thanks to the greenery, clear waters, and the historical ambience surrounding the Church of St. Jerome, it possesses much more of an island character than a typical urban bathing area.
About 100 Metres of Pebbles and Easy Access to the Sea
The main part of Prirovo consists of a pebble beach with fine and medium-sized stones.
The entry into the sea is gentle, with no sudden drop-off right by the shore, making the beach suitable for families with children. In certain areas, there are larger stones on the seabed, so water shoes may be useful, especially if swimming near the edges of the beach.
The water is very clean and clear for a location within a large harbour.
Prirovo is far enough from the main ferry terminal that swimming does not take place amidst port traffic, yet it is close enough to the centre that one can return to town within minutes after a swim.
The Shade of Tamarisks is One of the Greatest Advantages
Prirovo has something that many beaches near Vis lack – a good amount of natural shade.
Behind the pebble area, there is a row of tamarisks, and in the surrounding area, there are also pines. Their canopies create shade right by the beach, particularly beneficial for families with children and anyone who does not wish to spend the entire day in direct sunlight.
Of course, in July and August, the spots under the trees are the first to be taken.
If natural shade is important, it is best to arrive in the morning.
Compared to Vela Plaža, where shade cannot be relied upon, Prirovo is much more comfortable for a few hours of stay.
A Very Good Beach for Children
Prirovo is among the better city options for families.
Access is straightforward, with no long descents or challenging paths; the shoreline is pebbly, the entry into the sea is relatively gentle, and there is shade behind the beach.
Nearby, there are also beach volleyball and small football courts, making the area interesting for older children who do not want to spend the entire day just swimming.
For very young children, Stončica and Milna still have the advantage due to their more pronounced shallows, but if staying in the town of Vis, Prirovo is much simpler for daily trips to the sea.
The Water is Surprisingly Clean for a City Beach
Prirovo is located within St. George's Bay, but the quality of the water is one of its strong points.
Favourable sea currents through the entrance to Vis Harbour bring water from the open sea, so swimming around Prirovo can regularly be enjoyed in very clear waters.
This is confirmed by official water quality measurements – Prirovo has excellent water quality for swimming.
Especially early in the morning, before the larger daily boat traffic begins, the sea can be very calm and transparent.
A Good Spot for Snorkelling
The main pebbly part of the beach is not particularly dramatic for exploring the underwater world, but along the edges of the peninsula, there are more rocks and marine life.
This makes it more interesting for snorkelling.
On the rocky parts, sea urchins can appear, so care should be taken where one steps, and it is advisable not to walk barefoot on larger stones beneath the surface.
There are also underwater traces of older port and coastal structures around Prirovo, which further indicates how this area has been connected to seafaring for centuries.
However, due to its location in the city harbour, it is best not to swim unnecessarily far from the shore towards the directions where boats pass.
The Church of St. Jerome Right by the Beach
What sets Prirovo apart from almost all other beaches in Vis is its immediate proximity to the Church of St. Jerome and the Franciscan Monastery at Prirovo.
The complex dates back to the 16th century and was built above the remains of a Roman theatre from ancient Issa.
Therefore, during a visit to the beach, it is very easy to combine swimming with a short walk around one of the most interesting historical sites in Vis.
The stone church, monastery, cypress trees of the old cemetery, and the sea create an atmosphere that makes Prirovo much more intriguing than an ordinary city beach.
Especially in the evening, when most bathers have left, it is worth taking a stroll around the entire peninsula.
Swimming is Not Limited to the Pebble Beach
Prirovo is almost entirely surrounded by stone and concrete promenades along the sea.
During the summer, these areas are also used for sunbathing and entering the water.
This particularly suits adults who do not require a classic pebbly beach and prefer to descend directly into deeper water.
However, the main beach is much more practical for children and for longer stays due to the pebbles and natural shade.
Drinks and Food are Close By
Prirovo is not an isolated cove where one needs to bring everything for the entire day.
Just above the beach is the Issa Hotel, which has a bar and terrace among the pines, and other cafés, shops, and restaurants in the centre of Vis can be reached with a short walk.
Therefore, there is no need to carry large amounts of food and drink if coming to the beach from the town.
This combination of natural shade and proximity to all urban amenities is one of the reasons why Prirovo works well for a full day.
However, I would not rely completely on certain facilities directly on the beach, such as showers or equipment rentals, as their availability can vary throughout the season.
Beach Volleyball and Small Football
Behind the beach, there are sports courts for beach volleyball and small football.
This distinguishes Prirovo from most smaller urban bathing spots in Vis.
If coming with friends or older children, part of the day can be spent on the courts, and then one can immediately return to the sea.
For this reason, Prirovo is not just a place to lay down a towel and lie for a few hours, but one of the more active city beaches.
How to Get from the Centre of Vis?
The simplest way is to go on foot.
From the ferry port area and the town centre to Prirovo takes about ten minutes of easy walking.
The path is straightforward and almost completely flat, so there is no reason to use a car if you are already in town.
This makes Prirovo especially good for the last day of a holiday. After checking out of the apartment, one can spend a few more hours at the beach and then return to the ferry relatively quickly.
Of course, it is important to leave enough time for changing and boarding.
Parking Near Prirovo
If arriving at Prirovo by car from Rukavac, Milna, Rogačić, or another part of the island, the situation is simpler than in the narrow streets of Kut.
In the wider area, there is parking just a few minutes' walk from the beach, approximately 200 metres from the main pebble area.
However, during July and August, a free spot should not be taken for granted.
It is also important to distinguish between public parking and the parking lot of the Issa Hotel, which is intended for hotel guests.
If staying in the town of Vis, walking remains far more practical.
Prirovo or Grandovac?
Both beaches are accessible from the town without a special excursion, but they have different characters.
Prirovo is closer to the centre, more organised, has sports facilities, and is very practical for families.
Grandovac is further towards the eastern entrance of Vis Harbour and feels more natural, with a slightly more pronounced sense of a small island cove under the pines.
If one wants the simplest swimming experience close to the ferry and the centre, Prirovo is the better choice.
If one wishes to distance themselves a bit from the town and spend a few hours in a more natural setting, Grandovac has the advantage.
The Best Time to Arrive
Prirovo is very pleasant early in the morning.
At that time, there are fewer people on the beach, the sea is calmer, and it is easy to find a good spot under the tamarisks.
During the peak season, the beach fills up later as it is one of the most accessible in the town.
Late in the afternoon, it becomes pleasant again, especially if one wishes to take a stroll around the monastery after swimming and then continue towards the centre for dinner.
For guests arriving in Vis in June or September, Prirovo is even more enjoyable as its combination of town, greenery, and calm sea is much more pronounced.
The Most Practical City Beach in Vis
While Prirovo may not be a beach that one travels to Vis for on its own, it holds immense practical value for guests already staying in the town.
In about ten minutes from the centre, one can reach around 100 metres of pebbly shoreline, in the shade of tamarisks and pines, with clear water and sports facilities, without the need for a car.
Additionally, just a few steps away is the Franciscan monastery with the remains of a Roman theatre beneath its walls.
This is precisely why Prirovo effectively combines what makes Vis interesting: the sea, everyday urban life, and history that is present at almost every turn.
For families, guests without cars, and anyone who wants simple and pleasant swimming in close proximity to the centre of Vis, Prirovo Beach is one of the best choices in the town.
