Vela Travna Beach Vis – Tranquil Cove Velo Trovno on the Southern Coast

Vela Travna, locally referred to as Velo Trovno, is a peaceful pebble cove located on the southern side of the island of Vis, not far from Mala Travna and the nearby settlement of Marinje Zemlje. Although it is situated in the same coastal area as some of the island's most famous beaches, it does not experience large crowds, beach bars, or developed tourist infrastructure.

At the bottom of the cove, there is a beautiful natural pebble beach, with several old stone houses and boats along the shore, and behind them, pine trees, maquis, and steep slopes of the southern side of the island begin.

Vela Travna is therefore best suited for visitors seeking simple swimming in clear waters and who are willing to forgo the comforts of larger, well-equipped beaches.

Vela Travna is not the same as Mala Travna

The two coves are located very close to each other, and their names can easily be confused.

Mala Travna, or Molo Trovno, is situated slightly to the west and is much smaller. It is known for its sloping stone slabs, cooler waters, and the story of Senka Karuza.

Vela Travna, or Velo Trovno, is a larger cove with a more pronounced pebble beach and more houses along the shore.

However, the atmosphere is similar: there is no classic settlement, large roads along the coast, or tourist centre.

For this reason, it makes sense to treat both coves separately.

Pebble Beach and Very Clear Water

The main part of the beach is covered with light pebbles, while larger stones and rocks appear towards the edges of the cove.

The easiest entry into the sea is from the central part of the beach.

The seabed near the beach is predominantly pebbly and rocky, gradually deepening. There is no long sandy shallows, but entry for normal swimming is not demanding.

Water shoes can be useful, especially along the edges where the stones are rougher and sea urchins may be present.

The water is very clear, and due to the light seabed along the shore, it takes on a distinct turquoise colour.

A Good Spot for Snorkelling

The centre of the cove is best for regular swimming, while the side rocks are more interesting for snorkelling.

There, the seabed alternates between rocky areas, smaller underwater blocks, and vegetation, providing more marine life than the clear pebbly section.

The water can be exceptionally clear, especially early in the morning and during calm weather.

As local boats enter the cove and occasionally vessels come for swimming, it is advisable not to swim far into the middle of the cove without keeping an eye on the traffic.

How to Get There by Car?

The area of Vela Travna is accessed from Marinje Zemlje.

A dirt road branches off from the main island road leading to the southern coast. The road is not as well-maintained as the access to Srebrna or other more popular beaches, so the last part should be driven slowly.

You cannot drive right up to the beach.

Vehicles are left above or before the end of the cove, followed by a short walk to the sea. From where cars are usually parked to the beach, it takes approximately five minutes on foot.

This is, however, a significantly easier access than Stiniva, where a long and steep descent is required.

Exercise Caution on the Dirt Road

The road to Vela Travna is one of those roads on Vis where a few kilometres can take considerably longer than the map suggests.

The surface is unpaved, and conditions can change after winter, heavy rains, or construction work.

A regular car can generally get close enough if driven carefully, but low sports cars are not ideal for such approaches.

If arriving by scooter, it is even more important to adjust speed to the gravel and unevenness.

Do not attempt to force the car all the way to the houses on the shore just because navigation indicates a route.

Parking is Not a Designated Car Park

There is no large designated parking area for bathers at Vela Travna.

Cars are left in available spaces before the final walking approach, ensuring that the road, access to houses, or space needed for turning vehicles is not blocked.

In summer, it is wise to arrive early, although Vela Travna is significantly less burdened with cars than the most famous beaches on Vis.

Here, a simple island rule applies: where the road becomes too narrow or looks like private access, it is better to leave the vehicle earlier and walk the last few minutes.

Access by Boat is Very Simple

Like most coves on the southern coast of Vis, Vela Travna is naturally oriented towards the sea.

Arriving by boat or small craft is very pleasant and eliminates the whole issue of dirt roads and parking.

Smaller local boats are often seen in the cove, and during calm weather, sailors come for a day of swimming.

If anchoring your own boat, care should be taken regarding other vessels and local moorings along the shore.

The weather forecast is also important.

Vela Travna is located on the southern side of Vis and is not a place to remain without checking the weather when a sirocco or waves from the open sea are expected.

In calm summer weather, the situation is entirely different, and the cove can be very pleasant for several hours of swimming.

Is There Natural Shade?

Behind the beach and along the edges of the cove, there are pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation, so some natural shade can be found.

However, the majority of the pebble beach is exposed to the sun during the day.

The best shaded spots are few, so one should not rely entirely on natural shade in mid-July and August.

If planning to stay for several hours, a sun umbrella and good sun protection are advisable.

Early morning is particularly pleasant as the cove has a calmer atmosphere, the stones are not yet heated, and it is easier to find a spot along the edge of the beach.

No Beach Bar or Restaurant

Unlike Mala Travna, which has the well-known establishment of Senka Karuza, there is no classic restaurant or beach bar at Vela Travna that one can rely on during the day.

There are also no shops, showers, sunbed rentals, or other typical infrastructure found at developed tourist beaches.

Therefore, it is essential to bring:

sufficient water, some food if staying longer, sun protection, and everything else needed for your stay.

The nearest proper supplies should be made before descending from the main island road.

The absence of infrastructure is precisely why Vela Travna has managed to maintain its tranquillity.

Houses by the Sea Do Not Mean a Proper Settlement

Along the cove, there are about twenty houses and smaller structures, but Vela Travna does not feel like a classic tourist settlement.

There is no promenade, shops, restaurants, or streets one would expect in a coastal town.

The houses are scattered along the cove, and many of them traditionally served for summer stays, fishing, and simple life by the sea.

For this reason, the entire area still has a somewhat Robinson Crusoe character.

When there are not many bathers and boats, the feeling of distance from the rest of the island is very pronounced, even though Marinje Zemlje is relatively close in a straight line.

Is Vela Travna Suitable for Children?

For families accustomed to natural coves – yes.

The main beach is pebbly, entry into the sea is relatively easy, and there is no steep descent like that towards Stiniva.

On the other hand, there is no large shallow area, abundance of shade, or facilities for children.

Thus, Vela Travna is not the best choice for a family wanting a restaurant, ice cream, showers, and sunbeds just a few steps away all day.

If a peaceful natural beach is desired and one brings everything needed, it can be very pleasant for a family day out.

Why is it Quieter than the Famous Beaches of Vis?

The simplest reason is access.

Most visitors coming to Vis for the first time choose Stiniva, Srebrna, Stončica, Milna, or Zaglav. There are more well-known routes to these beaches, more information, and clearer tourist infrastructure.

To reach Vela Travna, one must consciously divert from the main road and descend the dirt track towards the coast.

There is also no significant tourist attraction that brings organised groups to the cove every half hour.

As a result, even in the peak season, Vela Travna often remains much quieter than the island's most famous beaches.

Of course, a small beach means that a few families or crews from boats can quickly change the feeling of space, so complete solitude cannot be guaranteed here in August either.

Vela Travna or Mala Travna?

If choosing only one of the two neighbouring coves, the decision largely depends on what kind of day one desires.

Mala Travna is more intimate, nestled between characteristic stone slabs and linked to the culinary story of Senka Karuza.

Vela Travna has a larger pebbly beach and somewhat more space for a classic beach stay.

Mala Travna has a more pronounced identity, while Vela Travna is a better choice if the primary aim is peaceful swimming on a natural pebble beach.

If you have the time and a car that can handle the dirt road, it is quite sensible to see both during your stay on Vis.

What to Bring?

Vela Travna is not a place where one can easily buy forgotten items after arrival.

The most important is water, especially in the height of summer.

It is also worth bringing some food, a sun umbrella, sun cream, and a mask and snorkel.

Water shoes are not mandatory across the entire beach, but they are helpful along the rocky edges.

If arriving in the evening or planning a longer stay, it is important to consider the return along the dirt road – it is better to head back to the main road before it gets completely dark if you are unfamiliar with the terrain.

Velo Trovno – Local Vis without a Large Tourist Scene

Vela Travna is not a beach that is marketed on Vis through a spectacular photograph.

There is no stone passage of Stiniva, the silver rocks of Srebrna, or the sandy shallows of Stončica.

Its value is different.

At the bottom, there is a white pebble beach, behind it a few simple houses and pine trees, and in front, the clear turquoise waters of the southern coast of Vis.

Access is via a dirt road, there is no tourist infrastructure, and it is still possible to spend several hours without the feeling that every metre of the coast is organised for visitors.

For guests who wish to experience a quieter, simpler Vis that lies beyond the main tourist routes after visiting the most famous beaches, Vela Travna, or Velo Trovno, is a very good choice.
