CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

Archaeological remains from the Paleolithic period testify to the settlement of this area, which in ancient times was the dividing line between the Illyrian tribes of Liburni and Delmata, while in the Middle Ages the core of the first Croatian state emerged in this area. Drniš was first mentioned in 1494. In the 15th century, Drniš fell under Turkish rule and remained under it until the end of the 17th century. During Ottoman rule, Drniš was a large city with 200 to 300 households, a built water supply system, bridges and five mosques. With the arrival of Venetian rule in the 18th century, Drniš descended from Gradina and a square, palazzino and quarter were built, which make up the present city centre. Towards the end of the 18th century, Drniš came under Austrian rule, under which it remained until 1918. During this period, brown coal mines were opened in Drniš, the city was connected by railway to Šibenik and Split, continuous teaching was introduced in primary schools, the Drniš Music was founded, the Slavonic Folk Reading Room was opened, the Croatian language was introduced in schools, the Croatian Falcon was founded, an organization that began organized sports activities, and a municipal savings bank was established with the aim of improving agriculture and forestry.

In 1923, Drniš received electricity, while in 1925, the construction of the railway to Zagreb was completed and telephony was introduced. After World War II, Drniš again experienced suffering in the Homeland War (1991-1995). On August 5, 1995, Drniš was liberated. The residents quickly returned to the destroyed city after the liberation, which they are still rebuilding to this day. You can learn more about Drniš's history at the Drniš City Museum.
