BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
The town of Drniš, located south of Mount Promina, is the central point of the Šibenik-Knin County, reached by following the main county road from Šibenik to Knin, at the far northeast of which lies the town of Knin and Mount Dinara. Drniš and the area of the neighboring municipalities of Promina, Ružić and Unešić are often referred to as the "Drniš area".
The city of Drniš, which covers an area of 355 km2 and includes 27 settlements, has 3,224 inhabitants, while the wider city area has a total of 7,801. The Krka and Čikola rivers flow through the city of Drniš, while the mountains Promina (1,148m), Moseć (838m) and Svilaja (1,508m) surround it. Drniš has such a unique microclimate, which means that summers are hot and winters are cold and windy, which is conducive to the production of the famous Drniški Pršut.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Archaeological remains from the Paleolithic period testify to the settlement of this area, which in ancient times was the dividing line between the Illyrian tribes of Liburni and Delmata, while in the Middle Ages the core of the first Croatian state emerged in this area. Drniš was first mentioned in 1494. In the 15th century, Drniš fell under Turkish rule and remained under it until the end of the 17th century. During Ottoman rule, Drniš was a large city with 200 to 300 households, a built water supply system, bridges and five mosques. With the arrival of Venetian rule in the 18th century, Drniš descended from Gradina and a square, palazzino and quarter were built, which make up the present city centre. Towards the end of the 18th century, Drniš came under Austrian rule, under which it remained until 1918. During this period, brown coal mines were opened in Drniš, the city was connected by railway to Šibenik and Split, continuous teaching was introduced in primary schools, the Drniš Music was founded, the Slavonic Folk Reading Room was opened, the Croatian language was introduced in schools, the Croatian Falcon was founded, an organization that began organized sports activities, and a municipal savings bank was established with the aim of improving agriculture and forestry.
In 1923, Drniš received electricity, while in 1925, the construction of the railway to Zagreb was completed and telephony was introduced. After World War II, Drniš again experienced suffering in the Homeland War (1991-1995). On August 5, 1995, Drniš was liberated. The residents quickly returned to the destroyed city after the liberation, which they are still rebuilding to this day. You can learn more about Drniš's history at the Drniš City Museum.

In addition to the beautiful landscape, you will also enjoy the rich gastronomic offer. Several restaurants in the city offer local specialties, such as Drniš prosciutto and sheep cheese "iz mišina", as well as various local dishes and excellent white and red wines, while the city's pizzerias will surprise you with rich pizzas. The pastry shop in the city center offers a variety of ice creams and other desserts, while in the city's numerous cafes you can drink morning or afternoon coffee, and have fun in the evening hours. In the summer, these parties often last until the early morning hours. Numerous concerts, plays and presentations are also held in the summer. The most important event in the city is the feast of St. Roko, which is held on August 16.
SPORT
It is an exceptional pleasure to see and feel untouched nature on a leisurely bike ride, and to encounter the streams of the Čikola and Krka rivers, or to test your physical endurance by riding a mountain bike along the gravel roads to the top of Promina. At 855 meters above sea level, the "Promina Mountaineering Association" has set up a mountain hut, where you can stay with prior notice. Mountaineering, trekking, hiking - all these activities are possible on Promina. Several marked trails lead to the mountain hut. The first leads from Drniš via Lišnjak and the Mali točak spring; the second trail leads from Drniš via the church of St. John in Badanj, and the third starts from Siverić. The time required to complete these routes is about 2 hours.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
There are many possibilities for one-day trips. In the immediate vicinity of the city are the Roški Slap waterfall and the islet of Visovac, which are part of the Krka National Park, as well as the Čikola Canyon and the historic cities of Šibenik, Knin, Zadar and Split with their rich cultural heritage.
