Buktenica Gallery & Buktenica – Šoltan Naïve Art in the Family Home of Eugen Buktenica
Buktenica Gallery & Buktenica is located in Grohote, within the family home of the Šoltan painter Eugen Buktenica Đenko. It can be found at 22 Šoltan Emigrants Street, in the older part of the village, just a few minutes' walk from St. Stephen's Church and Kaštel Slavić.
The gallery is dedicated to two of the most prominent figures in Šoltan naïve painting – Eugen Buktenica and his nephew Vicko Buktenica. Unlike a traditional museum with large exhibition halls, this is an intimate artistic space connected to family, home, and the place where the paintings were created.
Eugen Buktenica Đenko is one of the most significant Šoltan painters and a pioneer of the distinctive style of Dalmatian naïve art. His paintings depict island villages, stone houses, boats, fishermen, farmers, processions, celebrations, and scenes of everyday life on Šolta. They often lack classical perspective, featuring clear outlines, a multitude of small details, and bright, almost narrative compositions.
His works do not provide a photographic representation of the island. Instead, Šolta is reimagined through memories, humour, and personal experiences of life in a small island community. People, animals, houses, and landscapes are often depicted equally, as parts of the same story.
Particularly interesting are the scenes of island customs, processions, and gatherings. The figures are often dressed in vibrant colours and adorned with distinctive patterns, while the background features the sea, boats, stone walls, and settlements. This blend of island daily life and imaginative representation has made Buktenica's work easily recognisable.
The gallery also showcases works by Vicko Buktenica, a painter who continues the family artistic tradition while developing his own expression. His motifs are similarly connected to Šolta, the sea, stone villages, and the people living on the island, but his paintings differ in style, spatial relationships, and use of colour.
The joint exhibition allows for a comparison of the two artists from the same family and island environment. Visitors can identify the motifs that connect them, as well as the differences in how each perceives the landscape, people, and everyday life on Šolta.
The gallery operates under the auspices of the Eugen Buktenica – Đenko Art Association. The association was established to preserve the artistic legacy of Eugen Buktenica, promote Šoltan naïve art, and organise exhibitions, art colonies, workshops, and artist meetings.
One of the key programmes is the Days of Eugen Buktenica, an event that connects Šoltan and Podravina traditions of naïve painting. This programme includes exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, including a Small School of Naïve aimed at children, adults, and visitors wishing to learn about this painting style.
The connection between Šolta and Hlebine is not coincidental. Hlebine is one of the most renowned centres of Croatian naïve art, while Eugen Buktenica shaped its Dalmatian and island expression through his work. The collaboration between artists and associations from these two regions has facilitated the exchange of exhibitions, workshops, and joint cultural programmes.
A visit to the gallery is particularly engaging after a stroll through the old town centre of Grohote. The paintings depict the very stone houses, courtyards, people, and island scenes that surrounded the artists, making the exhibition a continuation of exploring the place.
The gallery does not resemble a large commercial exhibition space. The visit is more personal, and alongside the artworks, one can often hear stories about the artists, specific motifs, and the development of Šoltan naïve art. This direct contact is one of its greatest values.
Opening hours may vary throughout the year. The gallery is most active in summer and during cultural programmes, while visits outside the main season are best arranged in advance. It is advisable not to rely solely on the opening hours displayed on online maps, as openings may be adjusted according to exhibitions, workshops, and other commitments of the association.
The gallery is a short walk from the centre of Grohote. It is located within the old core, where the streets can be narrow and uneven. Nearby, one can visit St. Stephen's Church, the remains of an early Christian basilica, an old cemetery, and Kaštel Slavić.
It is not practical to park directly in front of the gallery. It is better to park in a permitted area along the wider road or in the central part of Grohote and walk the last part. The ferry port of Rogač is just a few minutes' drive from Grohote, and the settlements are also connected by the island bus.
Due to the older stone house, narrow access, and potentially uneven surfaces, individuals with reduced mobility should check the possibility of entry before visiting. The same applies to organised groups, as the gallery space is not large and cannot always accommodate a larger number of people at once.
Buktenica Gallery & Buktenica is one of the most significant cultural attractions in Grohote. It represents not only the works of two artists but also a unique perspective on Šolta – an island of fishermen, farmers, stone villages, processions, and everyday events transformed into vibrant island stories by naïve art.
