Školjić Beach on Šolta – a small natural swimming spot in Tatinja Cove
Školjić Beach is situated on the southern coast of Šolta, within the rugged Tatinja cove, south of Grohote. It is not a large, developed beach, but rather a small and relatively secluded swimming area surrounded by rocks, pine trees, and dense Mediterranean vegetation. It is most suitable for visitors seeking peace, clear waters, and a natural environment, away from the crowds and amenities typical of beaches in island settlements.
The shoreline consists of pebbles, larger stones, and rocky sections. The space for towels is limited, so the beach can fill up quickly even when there are not many people. In some areas, it is possible to settle on flatter rocks, but it is advisable to bring a thicker mat for comfort.
The water is very clear, with a bottom made up of pebbles, stones, and underwater rocks. Entry into the water is generally easier on the pebbly sections, while the rocky edges can be slippery and require more caution. Water shoes are recommended due to sharp stones and the possibility of sea urchins.
The depth increases relatively quickly, so Školjić is not a typical beach with a long and completely shallow entry. It may be suitable for families with older children who are good swimmers, but for small children, pushchairs, and individuals with reduced mobility, there are more practical beaches on Šolta.
One of the main advantages of Školjić is its underwater scenery. The transparent water, rocky bottom, and intricate edges of the cove are ideal for snorkelling. Along the shore, one can observe small fish, underwater rocks, and transitions from the bright shallow areas to the darker, deeper waters.
Natural shade can be found under the pine trees and along the vegetation at the beach's edges, but it is not guaranteed throughout the day. The best spots are taken early, while the central pebbly area is mostly exposed to the sun. For a longer stay, it is advisable to bring a hat and sunscreen.
There are no showers, toilets, changing cabins, sun loungers, umbrellas, or lifeguard services at the beach. There are also no kiosks or beach bars immediately by the swimming area. Visitors should bring enough water, food, and all essentials for their stay, and take all waste with them when they leave.
How to reach Školjić Beach
To get to the Tatinja area from Grohote, there is a rural and unpaved road leading to the southern coast. The last part of the approach to the beach is not paved like a town promenade, so one should expect uneven surfaces, stones, and a short walking section.
Access by car is possible via the unpaved road, but conditions may change after rain and during the season. Some sections may be narrow, dusty, or washed out, so low vehicles should proceed with caution. Passing on narrow stretches can be difficult with oncoming traffic.
There is no large, organised public parking near the beach. Vehicles can only be parked where there is enough width and permitted space, without blocking access to houses, the sea, or other parts of the cove. The last part of the road is often safer to traverse on foot.
It is also possible to reach Školjić on foot or by bicycle from Grohote, but the return journey involves an ascent from the southern coast. In summer, the path is mostly exposed to the sun, so it is advisable to set off early in the morning or later in the afternoon and to bring plenty of water.
Arriving by boat
Školjić is also appealing to visitors arriving by small boat. The cove offers good shelter in calm summer conditions, but the space is shared with bathers, local boats, and moored vessels. In some areas, there may be mooring buoys and ropes leading to the shore, so it is important to check current regulations and available space before anchoring.
It is recommended for speedboats to reduce speed well in advance, as bathers may be further from the beach itself. Before staying for an extended period or overnight, it is essential to check the weather forecast, as the southern coast of Šolta is exposed to changes in wind and waves from the open sea.
Who is Školjić Beach suitable for?
Školjić is the best choice for couples, competent swimmers, boat owners, and visitors who enjoy small natural swimming spots. It is not a destination for amenities or complete comfort, but rather for calm waters, beautiful underwater scenery, and a sense of seclusion from the more populated parts of the island.
Families with very young children, individuals with mobility difficulties, and guests carrying a lot of equipment may find access challenging. For them, more developed beaches in Maslinica, Rogač, Nečujam, or Stomorska are more practical options.
The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning when the sea is calmer and there is a greater chance of finding a shaded spot. During July and August, boats and guests from nearby houses come to the cove, but Školjić retains a much more natural and tranquil character compared to the main island beaches even then.
