Veli Bok Beach in Stomorska – a small pebble bathing area on the way to Pulenat
Veli Bok Beach is situated on the eastern side of Stomorska, along the coastal stretch that extends from the main promenade towards Pulenat and Pišćena. It is not far from the centre of the village, and can be reached in approximately five to ten minutes on foot. This is the first notable bathing spot after leaving the main bay, making it convenient for guests staying on the eastern side of Stomorska who wish to have a beach close to their accommodation, yet slightly away from the boats and traffic at the harbour.
Veli Bok is not a large, well-equipped beach, but rather a smaller coastal cove with a few entry points into the sea. In the central area, there is a short pebble beach, while the edges consist of stone slabs, rocks, and concrete sections. The beach is significantly smaller than Veli Dolac and does not have enough space for a large number of bathers. Once a few families settle in, the main pebble area fills up quickly.
The easiest access to the sea is via the pebbles in the middle of the cove. The pebbles are occasionally larger, and beneath them, stones and rocks can be found. The entry is not entirely even, but it is more practical than at Pulenat, where entry into the sea is mainly over rocky surfaces and ladders. Water shoes may be beneficial for children and anyone who finds walking on pebbles uncomfortable.
The water gradually deepens after a short shallow area. Children can bathe near the shore, but Veli Bok does not have a wide shallow zone for prolonged play in the water. Parents should stay close to younger children, especially when the sea is choppier. The depth increases near the side rocks, making that part more interesting for swimmers and those who enjoy observing the seabed with a mask.
Veli Bok is located outside the inner part of Stomorska harbour, so the water is cleaner and there are fewer boat passages compared to the main promenade. However, the shore is more exposed to the north. When a strong bora or other northern winds blow, waves can appear, and the water near the pebble area becomes choppier. During such times, more sheltered bathing spots inland in Stomorska may be a more pleasant choice.
At the back of the beach and around the nearby houses, there is some Mediterranean vegetation, but there is not enough natural shade for all bathers. Certain areas remain shaded during the morning or late afternoon, while the main pebble space is exposed to the sun for most of the day. For a longer stay, it is advisable to bring a sunshade, although due to limited space, it is not always easy to set it up without disturbing other bathers.
There are no beach bars, restaurants, or shops at the beach. One should not expect organised rentals of sun loungers, umbrellas, or water equipment. Veli Bok is primarily a local bathing spot adjacent to the settlement, rather than a developed tourist beach with all amenities. The advantage is that the centre of Stomorska is close enough for a quick return to the promenade for drinks, ice cream, or lunch. Stomorska officially has a number of smaller bathing areas on both sides of the central beach, while a greater range of facilities is concentrated in the centre and at Veli Dolac.
The easiest way to reach Veli Bok from the centre is on foot. The coastal road runs alongside houses and apartments and generally follows the sea. The path is neither long nor demanding, but in some sections, there is no wide pavement, so caution is advised regarding vehicles. For guests staying near Riva Pelegrin and in the surrounding streets, the beach is just a few minutes away.
It is possible to reach the beach by car via the road above, but there is no dedicated public parking specifically for bathers. The space near the houses is limited, and some parking spots belong to private accommodations. It is not advisable to descend to the beach expecting to find a free spot there. It is more practical to leave the vehicle in available public spaces closer to the centre of Stomorska and walk the last part.
Access to the shore may involve several steps or a short descent from the road, making the beach not particularly practical for those with reduced mobility or parents with pushchairs. Once at the pebble area, movement is easier, but there are not many flat surfaces.
Veli Bok does not have public toilets or changing cabins, and the availability of showers should not be taken for granted. It is best to bring everything needed for bathing with you. Since the beach is close to the settlement, it is not necessary to carry supplies for the entire day as one might for more remote coves on Šolta, but a bottle of water and sun protection are certainly essential.
This beach is suitable for short morning or afternoon swims, particularly for guests staying on the eastern side of Stomorska. Veli Bok is not a place where one would expect sun loungers, music, and all-day programmes. Its advantage lies in the easy access from the village, the pebble entry into clean water, and a quieter position compared to the main harbour.
For families seeking more space, natural shade, and a beach bar, Veli Dolac is a more practical option. Pulenat is better suited for strong swimmers who enjoy rocky surfaces, while Veli Bok serves as a sort of middle ground between the two beaches: it is smaller and simpler than Veli Dolac, but offers easier access to the sea than predominantly rocky Pulenat.
