Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nerežišća | Monumental Baroque Church in the Former Brač Capital

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in the center of Nerežišća and is one of the most significant sacred buildings on Brač. It is situated next to the main square, surrounded by stone houses, palaces, and narrow streets of the old town core, which has been the administrative and economic center of the island for centuries. Due to its size and location, the church dominates the entire village and is visible upon entering Nerežišća.

The first church on this site is mentioned as early as 1287, but it has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The current appearance largely dates from the 18th century when the church was remodeled in a monumental baroque style according to the design of the renowned Dalmatian builder Ignazio Macanović. Due to its size and internal layout, it is often referred to as the "Brač Cathedral," although it has never formally held the status of a cathedral.

Constructed from precisely worked Brač stone, the church features a prominent façade, a tall bell tower, and a spacious interior with three naves. The church appears much larger than one would expect for a place like Nerežišća, which speaks to the importance the village held throughout the history of Brač.

The interior is richly decorated and contains several stone altars, baroque paintings, and valuable artworks of Venetian origin. Notably, the altar piece "Our Lady of the Rosary" painted by Carlo Ridolfi in the 17th century and the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel created by the Venetian sculptor Pietro dal Secco stand out. The church also houses the organ built by the Venetian craftsman Pietro Nakić in 1753, which is one of the important historical organs on Brač.

The area around the church is one of the most beautiful parts of Nerežišća. The stone square, old noble houses, Venetian column, and narrow streets give the entire village the appearance of an old island capital. It is here that processions, klapa concerts, and events related to the feast of Saint Margaret, the patron saint of the village, take place during the summer.

The church is easily accessible as it is located along the main road through Nerežišća, with parking available a few minutes' walk from the village center. Since the entire old town core is built of stone and has little traffic, the area around the church remains quite pleasant for walking even during the summer season.
