Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nerežišća | Monumental Baroque Church in the Former Brač Capital

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in the heart of Nerežišća and is one of the most important religious buildings on Brač. It sits beside the main square, surrounded by stone houses, palaces, and the narrow streets of the old town, which has served as the administrative and economic centre of the island for centuries. Due to its size and location, the church dominates the village and is visible upon entering Nerežišća.

The first church on this site is mentioned as far back as 1287, but it has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The current appearance largely dates from the 18th century when the church was remodelled in a monumental Baroque style, designed by the renowned Dalmatian builder Ignazio Macanović. Due to its size and internal layout, it is often referred to as the 'Cathedral of Brač', although it has never held formal cathedral status.

Constructed from precisely worked Brač stone, the church features a prominent façade, a tall bell tower, and a spacious interior with three naves. It appears much larger than one might expect for a village like Nerežišća, which speaks volumes about the historical significance of the settlement on Brač.

The interior is richly adorned and contains several stone altars, Baroque paintings, and valuable artworks of Venetian origin. Notably, the altar piece 'Our Lady of the Rosary' by the painter Carlo Ridolfi from the 17th century stands out, as does the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel crafted by the Venetian sculptor Pietro dal Secco. The church also houses the organ built by the Venetian craftsman Pietro Nakić in 1753, one of the most important historical organs on Brač.

The area surrounding the church is one of the most picturesque parts of Nerežišća. The stone square, old noble houses, Venetian column, and narrow streets give the entire village the appearance of a former island capital. It is here that summer processions, klapa concerts, and events related to the feast of Saint Margaret, the village's patron saint, take place.

Access to the church is straightforward as it is located along the main road through Nerežišća, with parking available just a few minutes' walk from the village centre. Since the entire old town is built of stone and has limited traffic, the area around the church remains quite pleasant for walking, even during the summer season.
