Jurkovica Beach in Komiža

Jurkovica is located on the southern side of Komiža, just after Lučica and approximately a five-minute walk from the central waterfront. It is close enough to the center for a quick morning swim, but it has more of a local beach feel than a developed city beach. Along the shore, there are stone houses, small piers, tied boats, and fishing vessels pulled up on the beach, which gives a sense of the everyday life of Komiža rather than just the summer tourist season.

Visitors typically come to Jurkovica without much preparation: with a towel over their shoulder, for a quick swim or a few peaceful hours by the sea. The beach is larger than the neighboring Lučica, but it does not have the same facilities, making it generally feel more relaxed.

Pebbles, Stone Edges, and Boats on the Shore

The main part of Jurkovica is covered with pebbles, while the edges continue with stone slabs, smaller piers, and rocks. The most pleasant spot for a towel is on the pebbly section, but it should be noted that part of the shore is used by boat owners. A boat pulled up on the beach should not be seen as an inconvenience – it is part of the character of the beach and a reminder that Jurkovica is not solely designed for bathers.

The easiest entry into the sea is over the pebbles. The bottom is rocky at first and clearly visible when the sea is calm, and the depth increases gradually enough for typical swimming. Sensitive swimmers may find water shoes helpful, especially when entering along the edges of the beach.

In front of Jurkovica, there are several moorings, so swimmers should pay attention to smaller boats approaching the shore or leaving their moorings. For worry-free swimming, it is best to stay near the pebbly area and avoid swimming towards the busier part of the Komiža harbor.

A Good Spot for Snorkeling

Nearby Jurkovica is the B24 diving center, which uses this part of the coast for entering the water. The depth in front of the beach ranges approximately from one to six meters, making the underwater scenery accessible for beginners, and there are enough details along the rocky edges for interesting snorkeling.

The best visibility occurs when the sea is calm in the morning and there is not much boat traffic. Small fish and marine organisms can be observed among the rocks, while the more open central area is more practical for regular entry and swimming.

How to Get to Jurkovica from the Center of Komiža

From the waterfront, head towards the southern part of the harbor, passing along the breakwater and continuing towards Lučica Beach. Jurkovica is located just behind a small rocky outcrop that separates the two beaches. When the sea is low and calm, it is possible to pass closer to the shore between them, but a safer access route is the short path along the road above the beaches.

It takes approximately five minutes of easy walking from the center. Jurkovica is located directly below the main local road, so there is no long descent or challenging path. However, the final approach to the pebbles is not completely flat and may involve steps or uneven stone surfaces.

Access is not the most practical for strollers, and the beach is not equipped for independent access for individuals using wheelchairs.

Parking and Nearby Facilities

There is no separate large parking area for bathers directly at Jurkovica. The road above the beach runs through the built-up area of Komiža, and available spaces near houses and driveways are very limited. It is simpler to leave a car in a public parking area in Komiža and walk to the beach.

There are no typical beach amenities such as beach bars, sunbed rentals, or large organized spaces for all-day stays on the beach itself. An advantage is that Lučica and the center of Komiža are very close, allowing access to cafes, restaurants, and shops within a few minutes. Therefore, Jurkovica is not a secluded beach where one needs to bring large supplies of water and food.

The diving center near the beach uses part of the shore for its activities, so it is important to leave a clear passage when bringing in or taking out equipment.

Is There Shade?

There is not much reliable natural shade in the open pebbly area. Some shade during the day is provided by surrounding houses and buildings, but its position depends on the time of day. For longer stays, it is advisable to account for the sun, especially in the middle of the day.

A large umbrella is not always practical due to limited space, boats, and pathways along the shore. Therefore, Jurkovica is more pleasant early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is milder, the beach is quieter, and it is easier to find a spot by the sea.

Is Jurkovica Suitable for Children?

Children may appreciate the pebbly entry into the sea and the proximity of accommodation in the town, but Jurkovica is not a typically organized family beach. There are boats, ropes, and equipment on the shore, and there is not much natural shade or space for play.

For shorter swims with children, it can be a good choice, especially if staying nearby. For a full day, strollers and more beach equipment are more practical at the neighboring Lučica or larger Komiža beaches like Gusarica.

A Local Beach for Short and Quiet Swimming

Jurkovica is best understood when one does not expect a developed bathing area. Its value lies not in sunbeds and facilities, but in its proximity to everything while still retaining a local character. On the same shore, people swim, prepare diving equipment, maintain boats, and converse with neighbors from surrounding houses.

It will appeal most to guests staying in the southern part of Komiža, who enjoy smaller local beaches and want to swim without traveling to more distant beaches. For a quick morning swim or an evening refreshment, Jurkovica is one of the simplest choices in the town.
