Jurkovica Beach in Komiža
Jurkovica is situated on the southern side of Komiža, just beyond Lučica and approximately a five-minute walk from the central waterfront. It is close enough to the centre for a quick morning swim, yet its atmosphere is more akin to a local cove than a developed city beach. Along the shore, you will find stone houses, small piers, moored boats, and vessels pulled up onto the beach, which gives a sense of the everyday life of Komiža rather than just the summer tourist season.
Visitors typically come to Jurkovica without much preparation: towel over shoulder, for a quick dip or a few peaceful hours by the sea. The beach is larger than the neighbouring Lučica, but lacks its organised facilities, resulting in a more relaxed vibe.
Pebbles, Stone Edges, and Boats on the Shore
The main part of Jurkovica is covered in pebbles, while the edges continue with stone slabs, smaller piers, and rocks. The most pleasant spot for a towel is on the pebbly section, but it should be noted that part of the shoreline is used by boat owners. The boats pulled up onto the beach should not be seen as an inconvenience – they are part of the beach's character and a reminder that Jurkovica is not solely designed for bathers.
Access to the water is easiest over the pebbles. The seabed is rocky at first and clearly visible when the sea is calm, with depth increasing gradually enough for typical swimming. Sensitive swimmers may find water shoes helpful, especially when entering along the beach edges.
There are several moorings in front of Jurkovica, so while swimming, attention should be paid to smaller boats approaching the shore or leaving their moorings. For worry-free swimming, it is best to stay near the pebbly area and avoid swimming towards the busier part of the Komiža harbour.
A Good Spot for Snorkelling
Nearby Jurkovica is the B24 diving centre, which uses this stretch of coastline for water entry. The depth in front of the beach ranges from approximately one to six metres, making the underwater scenery accessible for beginners, with enough details along the rocky edges for interesting snorkelling.
The best visibility occurs when the sea is calm in the morning and there is not much boat traffic. Small fish and marine organisms can be observed around the rocks, while the more open central area is more practical for regular entry and swimming.
How to Get to Jurkovica from the Centre of Komiža
From the waterfront, head towards the southern part of the harbour, passing along the breakwater and continuing towards Lučica Beach. Jurkovica is located just behind a small rocky outcrop that separates the two beaches. When the sea is low and calm, it is possible to pass between them closer to the shore, but a safer access route is via the short road above the beaches.
It takes about five minutes of easy walking from the centre. Jurkovica is situated directly below the main local road, so there is no long descent or challenging path. However, the final approach to the pebbles is not completely flat and may involve steps or uneven stone surfaces.
Access is not particularly practical for pushchairs, and the beach is not equipped for independent access for wheelchair users.
Parking and Nearby Facilities
There is no large dedicated parking area for bathers directly at Jurkovica. The road above the beach runs through the built-up part of Komiža, and available spaces near houses and driveways are very limited. It is simpler to leave the car in a public car park in Komiža and walk to the beach.
There are no typical beach facilities such as beach bars, sunbed rentals, or large organised areas for all-day stays directly on the shore. The advantage is that Lučica and the centre of Komiža are very close, allowing access to cafes, restaurants, and shops within a few minutes. Therefore, Jurkovica is not a secluded beach where one needs to bring large supplies of water and food.
The diving centre by the beach uses part of the shoreline for its activities, so it is important to leave a clear passage when bringing in or taking out equipment.
Is There Shade?
There is not much reliable natural shade on the open pebbly area. Some shade is provided during the day by the surrounding houses and buildings, but its position varies depending on the time of day. For longer stays, it is advisable to consider sun exposure, especially around midday.
A large sunshade is not always practical due to limited space, boats, and pathways along the shore. Jurkovica is therefore more pleasant early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is milder, the beach is quieter, and finding a spot by the sea is easier.
Is Jurkovica Suitable for Children?
Children may appreciate the pebbly entry into the water and the proximity to accommodation in the town, but Jurkovica is not a traditionally organised family beach. There are boats, ropes, and equipment on the shore, and there is not much natural shade or space for play.
For short swims with children, it can be quite a good choice, especially if staying nearby. For a full day, pushchairs and more beach equipment would be better suited to the neighbouring Lučica or larger beaches in Komiža such as Gusarica.
A Local Cove for Short and Peaceful Swimming
Jurkovica is best appreciated when one does not expect a developed bathing area. Its value lies not in sunbeds and facilities, but in its proximity to everything while still retaining a local character. On the same shore, people swim, prepare diving equipment, maintain boats, and chat with neighbours from the surrounding houses.
It will appeal most to guests staying in the southern part of Komiža, who enjoy smaller local coves and wish to swim without travelling to more distant beaches. For a quick morning swim or an evening refreshment, Jurkovica is one of the simplest choices in the town.
