BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Komiža is a town on the island of Vis in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is located on the western side of the island of Vis in the deep Komiža Bay at the foot of the Hum hill. Due to the lack of agricultural land, Komiža has turned to the sea, namely fishing and tourism. According to the last census, it has 1,526 inhabitants. It is connected to the center of the island of Vis, 10 kilometers away, by the Sveti Mihovil Pass. Vis also has a ferry port that connects Vis with Split, a ferry and a catamaran. Vis and Komiža are connected by bus lines and a taxi service.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Komiža is somewhat younger than Vis. One theory of the origin of the name is that it comes from the word Com Issa, which means near Issa, an ancient settlement on the site of today's Vis. It is assumed that the Greeks and Romans settled the Komiža bay, but there is no evidence. Komiža was first mentioned in 1145 as Val Comeza in a deed of gift from Prince Petar, who ruled the Dalmatian islands at the time. It is believed that the Benedictine abbey that is now in the town existed even earlier. In 1997, it was granted the status of a city. In addition to the abbey, visit the church of Our Lady of the Pirates, the Venetian castle on the waterfront, the memorial house, Zonkot's house on Škor Square, the parish church of St. Nicholas with the remains of a Benedictine monastery, the City Library and Reading Room, galleries and the Fisherman's Museum.
BEACHES
Along the entire coast of Komiža Bay are pebble beaches with drinking water springs. These are Nova pošta, Velo žalo, Pizdica, Kamenice, Gusarica, Srebrna, Zaglav, Parja, Perna... If you are on Vis, you cannot leave without visiting the famous Stiniva bay.
