Mlin Beach in Komiža
Mlin Beach can easily be overlooked by visitors heading straight to the more famous Kamenice from the center of Komiža. It is located beneath the complex of the former Neptun fish processing factory, approximately a ten to fifteen-minute walk from the waterfront. It is not large or particularly developed, but this makes it a pleasant spot for quiet swimming when the town beaches are crowded.
This is not a beach for which one would pack an entire apartment and plan a full day stay. Mlin is better suited for a few hours by the sea, morning swims, or later afternoon bathing. There is a small pier next to the pebble beach, and there is no tourist crowd behind the beach, making it easy to return to the center on foot.
How to Find the Beach
From the center of Komiža, head towards the southern side of the bay, in the direction of Jurkovica and Kamenice. Mlin Beach is located after Jurkovica, beneath the former Neptun factory. Access to the area above the beach is via a local road, with the last part descending towards the sea.
The access point is not as noticeable as at Kamenice, so it is advisable to follow the location on a map and look for a passage along the complex of the former factory. As the buildings in the area are being renovated, the final access may occasionally change. It is important to stick to the public path and not enter fenced or construction areas.
The distance from the Komiža waterfront to the beach is approximately 600 meters. The walk is not long or particularly demanding, but the return involves a short ascent. Stable sandals or regular summer footwear are sufficient for the journey, while descending with strollers or large amounts of beach equipment is less practical.
Small Pebble Beach with a Stone Pier
Mlin is a small pebble beach with rocky sections along the edges. The most comfortable area to lie down is in the central part of the beach, but space is limited, and a few larger towels can quickly occupy the best spots. The pebbles are natural and vary in size, so a thicker mat is advisable for longer stays.
The small pier is one of the recognizable features of the beach. It can be used for sitting or leaving belongings away from the pebbles, but a clear passage should be maintained for boats. Jumping from the pier is not recommended without checking the depth and rocks beneath the surface first.
The easiest way to enter the water is over the pebbly section. There are larger stones and boulders along the shore, but entry is not particularly difficult. Water shoes can be useful for children and more sensitive swimmers, especially near the ends of the beach.
The sea is most beautiful when there are no waves, as the rocky bottom is clearly visible. For snorkeling, the edges of the cove are more interesting, while the central part is more practical for regular entry and exit from the water.
No Shade and Beach Equipment
There is almost no natural shade on the beach itself. The beach is open to the Komiža bay, and the sun stays on it for a large part of the day, especially in the afternoon. Due to the limited space, it is not always easy to set up a large umbrella, so a hat, light shirt, and good sun protection are more useful than bulky equipment.
The most pleasant times to visit are early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Mornings are usually quieter and it is easier to find a spot, while in the evening, the view towards the open part of the bay is quite nice. During the hottest part of the day, Mlin is not the best choice for those who are sensitive to the sun.
There are no tourist facilities at the location. There is no beach bar, shower, toilet, changing cabin, or rental of sun loungers and umbrellas. Water and all necessities for your stay should be brought from Komiža, although it is easy to return to the town if something is needed.
Arrival by Car and Parking
It is possible to drive close to the area above the beach, but there is no large organized public parking right next to the beach. The number of parking spaces in the surrounding streets and near the former factory complex is limited, and during the summer, one should not expect a free spot to be available right by the access point.
Cars should only be parked where they do not block the road, entrance to a property, or access to a construction site. For guests already staying in Komiža, walking is much simpler than searching for parking due to the short distance that can be easily covered in about ten minutes.
Is Mlin a Good Choice for Children?
The beach may be suitable for children who are accustomed to pebbles and rocky seabeds. The beach is small, making it easy to keep an eye on them, and entry from the middle of the beach is relatively simple.
For a full day family stay, there are more practical beaches in Komiža. Mlin lacks shade, toilet facilities, food, and ample space for play. Gusarica and Kamenice are better choices when looking for amenities and longer stays, while Mlin is more suited for shorter swims without extensive preparation.
The final access and natural surface are not adapted for individuals using wheelchairs. Older individuals who can move safely should not find the short descent problematic, but should consider the uphill return.
A Quieter Alternative to More Popular Komiža Beaches
Mlin is not the most photogenic beach in Komiža in the traditional sense. Above the beach is the industrial complex of the former Neptun, there are no pine forests or developed promenades, and the space for towels is quite limited.
However, it offers what some swimmers prefer over larger beaches: it is close to the center, the water is clean, there is no loud music, and it rarely feels overcrowded. It is most suitable for those staying in Komiža who are looking for a simple place to swim, without the need for a bar, loungers, and other amenities.
