Mlin Beach in Komiža
Mlin Beach can easily be overlooked by visitors heading straight from the centre of Komiža to the more well-known Kamenice. It is tucked away beneath the complex of the former Neptun fish processing factory, approximately a ten to fifteen-minute walk from the waterfront. While it is not large or particularly developed, this makes it a pleasant spot for a quiet swim when the town beaches are crowded.
This is not a beach where one would bring half a holiday's worth of gear for an entire day. Mlin is better suited for a few hours by the sea, a morning swim, or a dip later in the afternoon. Along the pebble shore, there is a small jetty, and there is no tourist congestion behind the beach, making it easy to return to the centre on foot.
How to Find the Beach
From the centre of Komiža, head towards the southern side of the bay, in the direction of Jurkovice and Kamenice. Mlin Beach is located after Jurkovice, beneath the former Neptun factory. Access to the area above the beach is via a local road, with the final section descending towards the sea.
The approach is not as obvious as that to Kamenice, so it is advisable to keep an eye on the map and look for a passage alongside the former factory complex. As the buildings in the area are being renovated, the final access route may occasionally change. It is important to stick to the public path and avoid entering fenced-off or construction areas.
The distance from the Komiža waterfront to the beach is approximately 600 metres. The walk is not long or particularly strenuous, but the return journey does involve a short incline. Sturdy sandals or regular summer footwear are sufficient for the trip, although descending with a pushchair or a large amount of beach equipment may be less practical.
A Small Pebble Beach with a Stone Jetty
Mlin is a small pebble beach with rocky sections along the edges. The most comfortable spot to lie is in the central part of the shore, but space is limited, and a few larger towels can quickly occupy the best areas. The pebbles are natural and vary in size, so a thicker mat is advisable for longer stays.
The small jetty is one of the beach's distinctive features. It can be used for sitting or placing belongings away from the pebbles, but it is important to leave a clear passage for boats. Jumping off the jetty is not recommended without checking the depth and the rocks beneath the surface first.
The easiest way to enter the water is over the pebbly section. There are some larger stones and boulders along the shore, but entry is not particularly difficult. Water shoes can be beneficial for children and more sensitive swimmers, especially near the ends of the beach.
The sea is most beautiful when there are no waves, as the rocky bottom is clearly visible. For snorkelling, the edges of the cove are more interesting, while the central area is more practical for general entry and exit from the water.
No Shade and Beach Amenities
There is almost no natural shade on the beach itself. The beach faces the Komiža bay and receives sunlight for a large part of the day, especially in the afternoon. Due to the limited space, it is not always easy to set up a large sunshade, so a hat, light shirt, and good sun protection are more useful than bulky equipment.
The most pleasant times to visit are early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Mornings are usually quieter and it is easier to find a spot, while in the evening, the view from the beach towards the open part of the bay is quite lovely. During the hottest part of the day, Mlin is not the best choice for those who struggle with the sun.
There are no tourist facilities on site. There is no beach bar, shower, toilet, changing cabin, or rental of sun loungers and umbrellas. Water and all necessities for your stay should be brought from Komiža, although it is easy to return to town if something is needed.
Arriving by Car and Parking
You can drive close to the area above the beach, but there is no large, designated public parking right next to the shore. The number of spaces in the surrounding streets and near the former factory complex is limited, and during the summer, it is unrealistic to expect a free spot right by the access point.
Cars should only be parked where they do not block the road, access to properties, or construction sites. For guests already staying in Komiža, walking is far simpler than searching for parking, as the distance can be easily covered in about ten minutes.
Is Mlin a Good Choice for Children?
The beach itself may suit children who are accustomed to pebbles and rocky seabeds. The shore is small, making it easy to keep an eye on them, and entry from the middle of the beach is relatively straightforward.
For a full day of family activities, there are more practical beaches in Komiža. Mlin lacks shade, toilet facilities, food options, and ample space for play. Gusarica and Kamenice are better choices when looking for amenities and longer stays, while Mlin is more suited for shorter swims without much preparation.
The final approach and natural surface are not suitable for those using wheelchairs. Older individuals who can move safely should not find the short descent problematic, but it is important to consider the uphill return.
A Quieter Alternative to the More Popular Komiža Beaches
Mlin is not the most photogenic beach in Komiža in the traditional sense. Above the shore is the industrial complex of the former Neptun, there are no pine forests or well-maintained promenades, and the space for towels is quite limited.
However, it offers what some swimmers prefer over larger beaches: proximity to the centre, clean water, no loud music, and it rarely feels overcrowded. It is best suited for those staying in Komiža who are looking for a simple place to swim, without the need for a bar, sun loungers, or other facilities.
