Vartalac Beach – Dog Beach in Komiža

Vartalac Beach is located on the southern side of the Komiža bay, at the exit of the town and just before Kamenice Beach. It is far enough from the central waterfront to be quieter than the urban bathing areas, yet still easily accessible on foot. Importantly, Vartalac is officially designated as a beach where dogs can swim in the sea, so owners do not need to search for a secluded spot or worry about their pets disturbing other bathers.

The beach is not large or particularly developed, but this makes it pleasant for a short stay with a dog. It consists of a natural gravel shore, rocky edges, and Mediterranean greenery that separates it from the houses and busier parts of Komiža. Although it is close to the town, Vartalac does not have the appearance of a typical urban beach.

Gravel Shore and Sea Access

The main part of the beach is covered with gravel and smaller pebbles, while the edges become rockier. The easiest access to the sea is through the middle of the shore, where there are no high rocks or the need to jump into the water. The bottom near the shore is a combination of gravel and stones, with depth increasing gradually.

This type of entry is suitable for most dogs, including those who are just getting acquainted with the sea and do not like to swim into deeper water immediately. Sensitive dogs may find walking on larger stones uncomfortable, so it is best to choose a flatter part of the shore.

The beach is quite small, so it quickly feels crowded during the summer when many owners and dogs gather. Pets should be kept under supervision, especially if they are not used to other dogs or become excited when arriving at a new place. Vartalac is a dog beach, but this does not mean that the safety of other animals and people can be overlooked.

Is There Shade at Vartalac?

Along the edges of the beach and in the hinterland, Mediterranean vegetation grows, creating some natural shade during parts of the day. However, there is not enough reliable shade on the main gravel area for a full day stay, especially when the sun is high.

During July and August, it is best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The gravel can become very hot around noon, which is uncomfortable for dogs' paws, and staying without enough water can quickly become tiring.

It is advisable to bring drinking water and a bowl for the dog, even if planning to stay only an hour or two. Seawater is not a substitute for drinking water, and after swimming, it is good to allow the pet to rest in the shade.

Facilities Near the Beach

Vartalac is not equipped like a large developed dog beach with a fenced area, special playground, and numerous services. During the tourist season, a small seasonal bar may operate near the beach, but its opening hours and offerings should not be relied upon, especially outside of July and August.

It is safest to bring everything needed for the stay: water, bowl, towel, leash, and waste bags for the dog. Waste should be taken away if bins are not available.

There is not much space for a large number of loungers and equipment. Vartalac functions best as a simple place for swimming, playing in the sea, and resting, rather than as a beach where one spends the entire day with all equipment.

How to Walk from the Center of Komiža

From the center of Komiža, head towards the southern side of the bay, in the direction of Lučica and Kamenice beaches. After Lučica, continue past Jurkovice and further towards the exit of the settlement. Vartalac is located before Kamenice, below the local road leading to the houses in this part of the coast.

It takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes of easy walking from the main waterfront. The path is not long and does not involve a serious ascent. Most of it runs along urban and local roads, while a short access path leads down from the road to the beach, which can be uneven in places.

The walk is simple for dogs, but in summer, care should be taken on heated asphalt. During the hottest part of the day, it is more pleasant to walk along the edge of the road where there is shade, or to schedule visits in the morning and evening hours.

Arrival by Car and Parking

Access by car is possible via the road leading to the surrounding houses and the southern part of Komiža. However, there is no large organized public parking lot directly at the beach that can be reliably counted on.

The space along the road is limited, and vehicles may only be parked where they do not block passage, entrance to a house, or access to the coast. During the peak season, available spots are quickly taken.

For guests staying in Komiža, it is more practical to walk. Visitors coming from another part of the island can leave their car in a permitted public parking area in the town and then continue towards Vartalac without searching for a spot near the beach.

Is the Beach Suitable for Children and Elderly People?

The shoreline and entry into the sea are not particularly demanding, but Vartalac is primarily a dog beach. Families with children should consider that there will be several dogs on the shore and in the water, some of which may be off-leash. For children who love animals and are accustomed to dogs, this may not be a problem, but families seeking a quiet bathing area without pets may prefer Lučica, Gusarica, or Kamenice.

For elderly individuals, the short access is generally not strenuous, but the final walk over gravel and uneven terrain can be tricky. The beach is not adapted for wheelchair users.

For owners of older dogs or dogs with mobility issues, the central part of the shore is the easiest, where access to the water is gentler and there is no need to cross larger rocks.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is best for dogs that cannot tolerate heat, need more space, or have difficulty navigating among larger groups of animals. The sea is usually calmer then, the gravel is not heated, and it is easier to find a spot along the edge of the vegetation.

Late afternoon is also pleasant, especially when the sun weakens and the beach receives more shade. Midday in summer is best avoided due to the hot gravel, strong sun, and lack of reliable shade.

Vartalac is accessible year-round, but it is most used as a proper bathing beach from late spring to early autumn. Outside of summer, it can be visited for a walk with a dog, but do not expect an open bar or other seasonal facilities.

Vartalac Beach is not large or particularly developed, but it addresses an important need for dog owners looking to relax in Komiža. It is close to the center, access is not demanding, and dogs can swim and stay on the shore without searching for a hidden spot away from official bathing areas.
