Vartalac Beach – Dog-Friendly Beach in Komiža
Vartalac Beach is located on the southern side of Komiža Bay, just outside the town and slightly before Kamenica Beach. It is far enough from the central promenade to be quieter than the town's bathing spots, yet still easily accessible on foot. Importantly, Vartalac has been officially designated as a beach where dogs are allowed to swim in the sea, so owners need not search for a secluded stretch of coast or worry about their pets disturbing other bathers.
The beach is neither large nor particularly developed, but this makes it pleasant for a short stay with a dog. It features a natural pebble shore, rocky edges, and Mediterranean greenery that separates it from the houses and busier parts of Komiža. Although close to the town, Vartalac does not resemble a typical urban beach.
Pebble Shore and Sea Access
The main part of the beach is covered in pebbles and smaller stones, while the edges become rockier. The easiest access to the water is through the middle of the shore, where there are no high cliffs or the need to jump in. The seabed near the shore is a mix of pebbles and stones, with depth increasing gradually.
This type of entry suits most dogs, including those who are new to the sea and may not want to swim straight into deeper water. More sensitive dogs might find walking on larger stones uncomfortable, so it is advisable to choose a flatter section of the shore.
The beach is relatively small, so during the summer, it quickly feels crowded when several owners and dogs gather. Pets should be kept under supervision, especially if they are not accustomed to other dogs or become excited in new environments. While Vartalac is a dog-friendly beach, it is essential to consider the safety of other animals and people.
Is There Shade at Vartalac?
Along the edges of the beach and in the back, Mediterranean vegetation grows, providing some natural shade during parts of the day. However, the main pebbly area does not offer enough reliable shade for an all-day stay, particularly when the sun is high.
During July and August, it is best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The pebbles can become very hot around midday, which is uncomfortable for dogs' paws, and staying without enough water can quickly become tiring.
It is advisable to bring drinking water and a bowl for your dog, even if you plan to stay for just an hour or two. Seawater is not a substitute for drinking water, and after swimming, it is good to allow your pet to rest in the shade.
Facilities at the Beach
Vartalac is not equipped like a large, developed dog beach with a fenced area, dedicated play area, and numerous services. During the tourist season, a small seasonal bar may operate near the beach, but its opening hours and offerings should not be relied upon, especially outside of July and August.
It is safest to bring everything needed for your stay: water, a bowl, a towel, a lead, and waste bags for your dog. Any waste should be taken away if bins are not available.
There is not much space for a large number of sun loungers and equipment. Vartalac functions best as a simple place for swimming, playing in the sea, and resting, rather than a beach where one spends the entire day with all their gear.
How to Walk from Central Komiža
From the centre of Komiža, head towards the southern side of the bay, in the direction of Lučica and Kamenica beaches. After Lučica, continue past Jurkovice and further towards the exit of the settlement. Vartalac is located before Kamenica, beneath the local road leading to the houses along this part of the coast.
It takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes of easy walking from the main promenade. The path is not long and does not involve a significant ascent. Most of it follows the town and local roads, while a short access path leads down to the beach, which can be uneven in places.
The walk is straightforward for dogs, but care should be taken on hot asphalt during the summer. In the hottest part of the day, it is more pleasant to walk along the edge of the road where there is shade, or to plan visits for the morning or evening hours.
Arriving by Car and Parking
Access by car is possible via the road leading to the surrounding houses and the southern part of Komiža. However, there is no large, designated public parking area directly by the beach that can be relied upon.
The space along the road is limited, and vehicles may only be parked where they do not block access, entrances to houses, or pathways to the coast. During the peak season, available spots are quickly taken.
For guests staying in Komiža, walking is the more practical option. Visitors coming from other parts of the island can leave their cars in permitted public parking in the town and then proceed to Vartalac without searching for a spot near the beach.
Is the Beach Suitable for Children and Elderly People?
The shore and entry to the sea are not particularly demanding, but Vartalac is primarily a dog beach. Families with children should be aware that there will be several dogs on the shore and in the water, some of which may be off-lead. For children who love animals and are accustomed to dogs, this may not be an issue, but families seeking a quiet bathing spot without pets may prefer Lučica, Gusarica, or Kamenica.
For older individuals, the short access is generally not strenuous, but the final walk over pebbles and uneven surfaces can be tricky. The beach is not accessible for those in wheelchairs.
For owners of older dogs or dogs with mobility issues, the central part of the shore is the easiest, where access to the water is gentler and there is no need to cross larger rocks.
The Best Time to Visit
Early morning is ideal for dogs that cannot tolerate heat, need more space, or struggle in larger groups of animals. The sea is usually calmer at this time, the pebbles are not heated, and it is easier to find a spot along the edge of the vegetation.
Late afternoon is also pleasant, especially when the sun weakens and the beach receives more shade. Midday during summer is best avoided due to the hot pebbles, strong sun, and lack of reliable shade.
Vartalac is accessible year-round, but it is most used as a proper swimming beach from late spring to early autumn. Outside of summer, it can be visited for a walk with a dog, but do not expect an open bar or other seasonal facilities.
Vartalac Beach may not be large or particularly developed, but it addresses an important need for dog owners looking to relax in Komiža. It is conveniently located near the centre, with easy access, allowing dogs to swim and stay on the shore without the need to seek out a hidden spot away from official bathing areas.
