Konoba Kod Paveta – Local Cuisine of Vis, Beef Stew and Handmade Dumplings

Konoba Kod Paveta is located in a quieter part of the town of Vis, just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront and Prirova. This is not a typical seaside restaurant where the view is the main attraction, but a small family tavern where the focus is primarily on the food – homemade, simple, and firmly rooted in Dalmatian and Vis cuisine.

The menu is not designed as a long list of tourist classics. Many dishes are based on what is good and available that day, with a significant portion of the vegetables and herbs coming from the family garden. This is why there is a clear distinction between restaurants that simply serve "Mediterranean food" and a tavern where the cooking is closer to home-style cuisine.

If visiting for the first time, two dishes particularly represent Kod Paveta well – beef stew with homemade dumplings and dumplings in a sauce of gorgonzola, walnuts, and sage.

Beef Stew with Homemade Dumplings

Beef stew is one of the main dishes that makes Kod Paveta memorable. The beef is slow-cooked in a rich sauce of wine, vegetables, and spices, served with homemade dumplings that absorb the thick sauce well.

This is not a light summer dish, but that is precisely why it is a good choice for a quieter dinner when one wants to try something truly Dalmatian, rather than another grilled fish.

The preparation of the beef stew is particularly important – the meat must be tender, the sauce rich and concentrated, and the dumplings fresh. At Kod Paveta, homemade dumplings appear as an important part of several different dishes.

Dumplings with Gorgonzola, Walnuts, and Sage

The second dish that is almost equally associated with this tavern is dumplings in a creamy sauce of gorgonzola, walnuts, and sage.

The flavor is significantly different from the beef stew – the intense cheese, nutty tones, and aroma of sage give the dish a memorable character. It is rich enough to serve as a main course and is particularly good if several different plates are ordered to share at the table.

Homemade dumplings here are not just a neutral side dish. They are one of the foundations of the cuisine at Kod Paveta and a reason to explore other daily combinations that feature them.

Lamb, Squid, and Seafood Dishes

Although beef stew and dumplings are among the most recognizable dishes, the offerings are not limited to meat dishes.

The menu includes squid, shrimp, seafood risottos, cuttlefish, and other fish and seafood dishes, depending on the daily offerings. Squid is prepared simply, often allowing the ingredient to remain in the spotlight.

Lamb can also be a good choice, especially when island lamb is available. As with other dishes, the preparation is more home-style than restaurant complicated.

At Kod Paveta, it is suitable for a group where one person wants beef stew, another fish or squid, and a third something from lamb or steak.

Risottos, Soups, and Seasonal Dishes

The offerings change and include dishes that may not be the first thing someone looks for on the menu.

Black risotto, risotto with cuttlefish or seafood, homemade soups, vegetable dishes, and combinations with seasonal herbs may appear. Particularly interesting is motar, a wild Mediterranean plant traditionally harvested by the sea and used as a sour-salty addition to various dishes.

During the season, tomatoes, salads, green beans, and other vegetables from the garden are used, so even the simplest side dish can depend significantly on what has just been harvested.

This is also why it does not make much sense to plan every order in advance. Kod Paveta is one of the places where it is worth asking what is particularly good that day.

Homely Atmosphere Instead of a Formal Restaurant

At Kod Paveta, the atmosphere is small and family-run, which is felt in the way the service is provided.

The atmosphere is relaxed and personal, without fine-dining formalities. Instead of a large restaurant space, the impression is closer to dinner in a small Dalmatian tavern where it is known what has been prepared that day, and dishes are recommended accordingly.

This suits the cuisine well. Beef stew, homemade dumplings, soup, lamb, or seasonal vegetables do not make much sense if they are attempted to be turned into overly sophisticated plates.

Local Wine with Dinner

Alongside the food, Croatian and local wines are offered, and with such a menu, it is advisable to choose according to the main dish.

With squid, shrimp, and seafood risotto, white wine is a natural choice, while beef stew, steak, and lamb pair better with fuller red wine.

If unfamiliar with Vis labels, it is simplest to ask what they currently have open and what pairs best with the ordered dish.

Reservations Recommended

As Kod Paveta is not a large tavern, it makes sense to reserve a table during the season, especially if visiting in the evening when most restaurants in the town fill up.

Reservations are also useful for another reason – with a smaller kitchen and a menu that relies on freshly prepared food, it is good to know in advance how many guests are coming.

If a specific dish is desired or if coming with a larger group, it is worth mentioning this when making the reservation.

How to Get There

The tavern is located on Ivana Farolfija Street, slightly set back from the coast.

It is easily accessible on foot from the center of Vis and the ferry port, as well as from the direction of Prirova and Kuta. If already staying in the town, a car is not necessary.

The location is close enough to the waterfront that dinner can easily be combined with an evening stroll by the sea, but far enough away that the atmosphere is not the same as on the busiest coastal terraces.

Parking

The tavern does not have a large private parking area immediately next to the establishment.

If arriving by car from the interior of the island, it is best to use available public parking spaces in the wider area of the town and continue the last part on foot.

For guests staying in Vis or sailors docked in the port, walking is the simplest option.
