Konoba Kod Paveta – Traditional Vis Cuisine, Beef Stew and Handmade Dumplings

Konoba Kod Paveta is located in a quieter part of the town of Vis, just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront and Prirova. This is not a typical seaside restaurant where the view is the main attraction, but rather a small family-run konoba where the focus is primarily on the food – home-cooked, simple, and firmly rooted in Dalmatian and Vis cuisine.

The menu is not designed as a lengthy list of tourist classics. Many dishes are based on what is fresh and available that day, with a significant portion of the vegetables and herbs sourced from the family garden. This is why there is a clear distinction here between restaurants that merely serve 'Mediterranean food' and a konoba that cooks in a manner closer to home cooking.

If it's your first visit, two dishes particularly represent Kod Paveta well – beef stew with homemade dumplings and dumplings in a sauce of gorgonzola, walnuts, and sage.

Beef Stew with Homemade Dumplings

Beef stew is one of the signature dishes that makes Kod Paveta memorable. The beef is slow-cooked in a rich sauce of wine, vegetables, and spices, served alongside homemade dumplings that soak up the thick sauce.

This is not a light summer dish, but that is precisely why it is a good choice for a quieter dinner when one wishes to try something truly Dalmatian, rather than yet another grilled fish.

The preparation of the stew is particularly important – the meat must be tender, the sauce rich and concentrated, and the dumplings fresh. At Kod Paveta, the homemade dumplings feature prominently in several different dishes.

Dumplings with Gorgonzola, Walnuts, and Sage

The second dish closely associated with this konoba is dumplings in a creamy sauce of gorgonzola, walnuts, and sage.

The flavour is quite different from the beef stew – the intense cheese, nutty tones, and aroma of sage give the dish a memorable character. It is rich enough to serve as a main course and is particularly good if several different plates are ordered to share at the table.

Here, the homemade dumplings are not just a neutral side dish. They are one of the cornerstones of the cuisine at Kod Paveta and a reason to explore other daily combinations that feature them.

Lamb, Squid, and Seafood Dishes

Although beef stew and dumplings are among the most recognisable dishes, the menu is not limited to meat options.

It also features squid, prawns, and shrimp, seafood risottos, cuttlefish, and other fish and seafood dishes, depending on the daily offerings. Squid is prepared simply, often allowing the ingredient itself to take centre stage.

Lamb can also be a good choice, especially when local island lamb is available. As with other dishes, the preparation is more home-style than restaurant complicated.

This makes Kod Paveta suitable for a group where one person wants beef stew, another fish or squid, and a third something from the lamb or steak options.

Risottos, Soups, and Seasonal Dishes

The offerings also change with dishes that might not be the first thing someone looks for on the menu.

Black risotto, risotto with cuttlefish or seafood, homemade soups, vegetable dishes, and combinations with seasonal herbs may appear. Particularly interesting is motar, a wild Mediterranean plant traditionally foraged by the sea and used as a tangy-salty addition to various dishes.

In season, tomatoes, salads, green beans, and other vegetables from the garden are used, meaning even the simplest side dish can depend significantly on what has just been harvested.

This is also why it makes little sense to plan every order in advance. At Kod Paveta, it is worth asking what is particularly good that day.

Homely Atmosphere Instead of Formal Dining

Konoba Kod Paveta is small and family-run, which is reflected in the service style.

The atmosphere is relaxed and personal, without the formalities of fine dining. Instead of a large restaurant space, the feel is closer to having dinner in a small Dalmatian konoba where the day's preparations are known, and dishes are recommended accordingly.

This suits the cuisine perfectly. Beef stew, homemade dumplings, soup, lamb, or seasonal vegetables do not lend themselves well to being transformed into overly sophisticated plates.

Local Wine with Dinner

Alongside the food, Croatian and local wines are offered, and it is advisable to choose according to the main dish.

With squid, shrimp, and seafood risotto, white wine is a natural pairing, while beef stew, steak, and lamb are better complemented by fuller-bodied red wine.

If you are unfamiliar with Vis labels, the simplest approach is to ask what is currently open and what pairs best with your chosen dish.

Reservations Recommended

Konoba Kod Paveta is not large, so during the season, it makes sense to reserve a table, especially if visiting in the evening when most restaurants in the town fill up.

Reservations are also useful for another reason – with a smaller kitchen and a menu that relies on freshly prepared food, it is beneficial to know in advance how many guests will be coming.

If a specific dish is desired or if visiting with a larger group, it is worth mentioning this when making the reservation.

How to Get There

The konoba is located on Ivana Farolfija Street, slightly set back from the coast.

It is easily accessible on foot from the centre of Vis and the ferry port, as well as from the direction of Prirova and Kuta. If you are already staying in the town, a car is not necessary.

The location is close enough to the waterfront that dinner can easily be combined with an evening stroll by the sea, yet far enough removed that the atmosphere is not the same as on the busiest coastal terraces.

Parking

The konoba does not have a large private parking area immediately next to the premises.

If arriving by car from the interior of the island, it is best to use the available public parking spaces in the wider area of the town and continue the last part on foot.

For guests staying in Vis or sailors moored in the harbour, walking is the simplest option.
