Veli Dolac Beach in Stomorska – a pebbly cove with natural shade and Beach Bar Africa

Veli Dolac Beach is situated on the northern side of Stomorska, away from the main waterfront and the busiest part of the town. It is located in a smaller cove that can be reached from the center by a coastal road, passing by houses, apartments, and several smaller swimming spots. The walk from the beginning of the Stomorska waterfront to the beach takes approximately ten minutes, depending on the starting point.

This beach is one of the most practical options in Stomorska for families with children. The main part of the shore is covered with finer pebbles and small stones, and the entry into the sea is gradual and easier than at the surrounding rocky bathing areas. In the shallow water, one generally walks on pebbles, while further out, there are stones and areas covered with seagrass. Water shoes are not necessary, but they can be beneficial for small children and those who find walking on pebbles uncomfortable.

The beach is not a wide and uniform area. The central pebbly section extends to concrete parts and natural rocks, allowing bathers to spread out along a larger part of the shore. It is easiest to settle on the pebbles with children, while the rocky and concrete areas are practical for those who prefer to be a bit further from the main entry point into the sea. The beach is long, but in some sections, it is quite narrow, which can lead to crowds during July and August.

Behind the beach, there is a dense pine forest, which is one of the greatest advantages of Veli Dolac. Along the back of the shore and under the pines, natural shade can be found, especially in the morning and early afternoon hours. The shade moves throughout the day and does not cover the entire beach, so the best spots are taken quite early. For a full day stay, it is advisable to bring your own umbrella, especially if you wish to remain right on the pebbles by the sea.

Adjacent to the beach is Beach Bar Africa, set among the pines above the sea. This is the closest place for coffee, cold drinks, beer, or a break from the sun, so there is no need to carry a large amount of drinks and food to Veli Dolac as one might for more distant beaches on Šolta. The bar is separate from the center of Stomorska and has a more relaxed atmosphere than establishments on the main waterfront. Since it operates seasonally, it should not be assumed that it will always be open outside the main summer period.

Access to Veli Dolac by car is via an asphalt road leading from Stomorska to the northern part of the settlement. The road is passable for regular passenger vehicles, but it is occasionally narrow, especially when cars are parked along the edge. Parking is available in designated spots and widening above the beach and along the road near the pine forest. There is no large organized parking area that guarantees a free spot for every visitor, so during the peak season, it is advisable to arrive early or leave the vehicle a bit further away and continue on foot.

Guests staying in Stomorska generally do not need a car. The coastal walk to the beach is not demanding, with no significant inclines, and it is short enough to be manageable with children. However, in some parts of the road, there is no wide sidewalk, so caution is advised regarding vehicles, especially when returning in the evening.

At Veli Dolac, there is a shower available, but one should not expect the level of amenities found at large hotel beaches. The availability of sun loungers, umbrellas, and other seasonal facilities may vary from year to year. The public restroom is most conveniently found within the hospitality establishment, with prior consumption. Shops, restaurants, and a wider selection of cafes are located in the center of Stomorska, a few minutes' walk to the south.

The sea in the cove is generally calm and suitable for swimming. Veli Dolac is sufficiently distanced from the main moorings and boat traffic in the harbor, although smaller boats may appear in the wider area. There are interesting spots for snorkeling along the rocky edges of the cove, while the middle of the beach is better suited for children and less experienced swimmers.

Along the coast, there are smaller pebbly and rocky sections where fewer people swim. Further from the main beach, there is also an area marked on some maps as a dog beach. This is not the same space as the main bathing area of Veli Dolac, allowing families with children and dog owners to spread out in separate parts of the shore.

Veli Dolac is the best choice for guests who want a pebbly beach, natural shade, and a beach bar, but do not wish to stay in the very center of Stomorska. It is close enough to the waterfront for easy access on foot, yet it is removed from the main traffic and evening crowds. The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning when there are still shaded spots available and the sea is completely calm.
