Veli Dolac Beach in Stomorska – a pebbly cove with natural shade and Beach Bar Africa
Veli Dolac Beach is located on the northern side of Stomorska, away from the main promenade and the busiest part of the village. It is situated in a smaller cove, accessible from the centre via a coastal road that passes by houses, apartments, and several smaller swimming spots. The walk from the beginning of the Stomorska waterfront to the beach takes approximately ten minutes at a leisurely pace, depending on your starting point.
This beach is one of the most convenient options in Stomorska for families with children. The main part of the shore is covered with finer pebbles and small stones, and the entry into the sea is gradual and easier than at the surrounding rocky bathing areas. In the shallow water, one typically walks on pebbles, while further out, there are some rocks and patches of seagrass. Footwear is not essential, but it may be beneficial for small children and those who find walking on pebbles uncomfortable.
The beach is not a wide, uniform expanse. The central pebbly area extends to concrete sections and natural rocks, allowing bathers to spread out along a larger part of the shore. It is easiest to settle on the pebbles with children, while the rocky and concrete areas are practical for those who prefer to be a bit further from the main entry point to the sea. The beach is long, but in certain sections, it is quite narrow, which can lead to a quick build-up of visitors during July and August.
Behind the beach, there is a dense pine forest, which is one of the greatest advantages of Veli Dolac. Along the back of the shore and beneath the pines, natural shade can be found, especially in the morning and early afternoon hours. The shade shifts throughout the day and does not cover the entire beach, so the best spots are claimed quite early. For a full day’s stay, it is advisable to bring your own sunshade, particularly if you wish to remain right on the pebbles by the sea.
Adjacent to the beach is the Beach Bar Africa, set among the pines above the sea. This is the closest place for coffee, cold drinks, beer, or a break from the sun, meaning that visitors to Veli Dolac do not need to carry a large amount of food and drink as they might to more distant beaches on Šolta. The bar is somewhat removed from the centre of Stomorska and offers a more relaxed atmosphere than establishments on the main promenade. As it operates seasonally, it is advisable not to assume it will always be open outside the peak summer months.
Access to Veli Dolac by car is via an asphalt road leading from Stomorska to the northern part of the settlement. The road is passable for standard vehicles, but it can be narrow in places, especially when cars are parked along the edges. Parking is available in designated spots and widenings above the beach, as well as along the road near the pine forest. There is no large, organised car park that guarantees a space for every visitor, so during the peak season, it is wise to arrive early or park a bit further away and walk.
Guests staying in Stomorska generally do not require a car. The coastal walk to the beach is not demanding, with no significant inclines, and is short enough to be manageable with children. However, in certain sections of the road, there is no wide pavement, so caution is advised regarding vehicles, particularly when returning in the evening.
At Veli Dolac, there is a shower available, but one should not expect the level of facilities found at large hotel beaches. The availability of sun loungers, umbrellas, and other seasonal amenities may vary from year to year. The public toilet is most conveniently found within the hospitality establishment, with prior consumption. Shops, restaurants, and a wider selection of cafés can be found in the centre of Stomorska, just a few minutes' walk to the south.
The sea in the cove is generally calm and suitable for swimming. Veli Dolac is sufficiently distanced from the main moorings and boat traffic in the harbour, although smaller boats may appear in the wider waters. There are interesting areas for snorkelling along the rocky edges of the cove, while the middle of the beach is better suited for children and less experienced swimmers.
Along the coastline, there are smaller pebbly and rocky sections where fewer people swim. Further from the main beach, there is also an area marked on some maps as a dog beach. This is not the same space as the main bathing area of Veli Dolac, allowing families with children and dog owners to spread out along separate parts of the shore.
Veli Dolac is an excellent choice for guests seeking a pebbly beach, natural shade, and a beach bar, without wanting to stay right in the centre of Stomorska. It is close enough to the waterfront to reach on foot easily, yet sufficiently removed from the main traffic and evening crowds. The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning, while there are still shaded spots available and the sea is completely calm.
