Ivan Dolac is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations on the southern coast of the island of Hvar, located between Zaval and Sveta Nedjelja, beneath steep slopes covered with vineyards, pine forests, and Mediterranean vegetation. This small coastal settlement is particularly attractive due to its clear sea, pebble beaches, views of the islands of Šćedro and Korčula, and the relaxed Dalmatian atmosphere that is best felt in the evenings when the daytime crowds at the beaches gradually subside.
Unlike larger tourist centers on Hvar, Ivan Dolac does not have large hotels, a long promenade, or a developed nightlife. Instead, it offers private apartments and holiday homes surrounded by greenery, a few good restaurants and bars, and a series of beaches that can be reached on foot from most parts of the settlement. The combination of beautiful beaches, comfortable accommodation, and a quieter way of vacationing is why many guests return to Ivan Dolac year after year.
The main attraction of Ivan Dolac is its beaches. The coastline alternates between pebble coves, rocky areas suitable for sunbathing, and smaller natural swimming spots. The sea is exceptionally clear, and there are interesting places for snorkeling along the rocky edges of the coves. Since the coast faces south, the sea can be choppy during the sirocco winds, while the calmest days are the most pleasant for swimming.
Ivan Dolac Beach, also known as Velo žolo, is the main beach of the settlement and the most popular choice for families with children. The pebble shoreline, easy access to the sea, and proximity to restaurants, cafes, and accommodation make it practical for all-day swimming. During the peak summer season, it is the busiest here, so for a quieter experience, it is best to visit in the morning.
Podnožica – Feronija Beach is located in the western part of the settlement and attracts guests looking for a quieter atmosphere without having to travel far. Nearby is the Šanpjerin Beach Bar, a pleasant spot for refreshments by the sea.
Paklina Beach is another beautiful part of the coastline of Ivan Dolac. The combination of rocky areas and access to the sea is suitable for guests who enjoy exploring the coast and finding their own swimming nook. It is advisable to wear water shoes in the more natural parts of the coast.
FKK Mola Podnožica Beach is designated for guests who prefer naturist swimming and a quieter stay by the sea. Due to the rocky terrain and simpler access conditions, it is more suitable for those who enjoy natural beaches without many amenities.
West of Ivan Dolac is Jagodna Beach, one of the most beautiful pebble coves in this part of Hvar. Nestled between steep slopes and greenery, it is known for its turquoise sea and picturesque natural surroundings. It is particularly a good choice for those who want to explore more beaches on the southern coast during their vacation.
When choosing a beach, it is worth considering the availability of shade. Pines and surrounding vegetation provide shelter in some areas of the coast, but many sunbathing spots remain exposed to the sun for most of the day. For longer stays, especially with small children, it is advisable to bring an umbrella.
Although Ivan Dolac is a small place, during the tourist season it offers several different options for lunch, dinner, or a relaxed drink after swimming.
Restaurant Slavinka is one of the well-known dining establishments in the area and a practical choice for guests who want to dine in Ivan Dolac without driving to neighboring settlements.
Restaurant Rot Ivan Dolac, situated on a hill above the sea, is particularly noted for its panoramic view of the southern coast of Hvar and the islands on the horizon. The space was previously known as OPG Carić and now combines local gastronomy, grilled dishes, and homemade wines with one of the most striking views in the area. It is especially appealing in the evening when the sun is lower and the view of Šćedro, Korčula, and the distant islands is highlighted.
ARIA Restaurant is a newer addition to the culinary offerings of Ivan Dolac, opened in 2026, while Fast Food Mareto in the central part of the settlement offers a simpler, informal meal. Its menu includes burgers, ćevapi, tortillas, sandwiches, salads, pancakes, and other fast dishes, which is convenient especially during a day spent at the beach.
For morning coffee, afternoon refreshments, or evening gatherings, Vartal, a café-bar operating since 2009, is a good choice, particularly pleasant due to its abundance of natural shade. Along with coffee and cold drinks, local wines, cocktails, and ice cream are offered.
Šanpjerin Beach Bar, located near Podnožica, provides a different, relaxed lounge atmosphere. Decorated in a boho style, with cocktails, cold platters, bruschetta, and oysters, it is an attractive place to take a break by the sea.
Ivan Dolac is not only known for its beaches. The steep, sun-drenched slopes above the settlement belong to one of the most renowned wine-growing areas on the island of Hvar, where Plavac Mali holds a special place.
The vineyards in this part of the island are cultivated on demanding terrain, often on rocky terraces exposed to strong summer sun. Such conditions, along with proximity to the sea and highly sunlit southern positions, contribute to the production of strong red wines with intense color and rich flavor.
Viticulture has been an important part of life in Ivan Dolac and surrounding settlements for centuries. Traces of this way of life are visible in the dry stone walls, old stone houses, and cultivated plots that climb the slopes above the sea.
For wine lovers, a stay in Ivan Dolac is an opportunity to explore one of the most recognizable wine landscapes in Dalmatia. Local wines can be tasted in some restaurants and purchased from producers, and the drive between Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjelja reveals particularly beautiful views of vineyards above the open sea.
Present-day Ivan Dolac developed from an older settlement connected to the area of Taja, mentioned as early as the 15th century. The population of surrounding places, especially Pitava and Svirča, has cultivated the land here for centuries, and the settlement gradually expanded towards the coast.
An important part of local history is associated with the Kačić family, whose estates encompassed this area in the early 17th century. Later, the land gradually passed into the hands of local landowners and vintners, and over time, alongside agriculture, holiday homes began to emerge.
Among the few sacred landmarks of the place is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as the Church of St. Mary or Our Lady of Pompeii. It is located in the older, elevated part of the settlement and reflects the religious and viticultural life of former Ivan Dolac. Particularly interesting is an inscription from 1901 related to gratitude for being spared from vine disease.
At the eastern entrance to the settlement is the old Lokva, once a watering place for livestock, one of the modest but interesting traces of a time when agriculture and livestock farming played a more significant role than tourism.
Ivan Dolac is not a place with a large number of monumental landmarks. Its history is best understood through old houses, the church, dry stone walls, and vineyards that still define the appearance of the surrounding landscape.
Most guests come to Ivan Dolac primarily for swimming and relaxation, but the surroundings offer enough opportunities for those who wish to spend part of the day more actively.
Walking along the coast, exploring smaller swimming spots, and snorkeling are among the simplest ways to enjoy nature. The sea is particularly interesting along the rocky edges of the coves due to underwater rocks and diverse marine life.
Photography enthusiasts can enjoy views from higher parts of the settlement and the road to Sveta Nedjelja. The southern slopes of Hvar, the blue of the open sea, and the island of Šćedro create scenes that are particularly beautiful in the morning and late afternoon light.
For shorter excursions, it is worth visiting Zavala, located about 3 km away, which also has beautiful beaches and a peaceful coastal atmosphere. In the opposite direction is Sveta Nedjelja, about 5 km away, known for its vineyards, steep cliffs, and attractive coastline.
Further away, through the Pitve – Zavala tunnel, are the traditional settlements of Pitve and Jelsa, which offer a wider selection of restaurants, shops, promenades, and other tourist amenities.
During the summer, fishing evenings have been organized in Ivan Dolac, featuring music, socializing, and local specialties. Such events, when scheduled, provide a nice opportunity to experience the more relaxed and social side of the place.
Most often, Ivan Dolac is reached by car via Jelsa and the village of Pitve. After passing through Pitve, the road leads to the well-known Pitve – Zavala tunnel, which connects to the southern side of the island of Hvar. After descending towards Zavala, the road continues west along the coast to Ivan Dolac.
The tunnel is approximately 1.4 km long, narrow, unlit, and has alternating traffic regulated by traffic lights at the entrances. For drivers visiting Hvar for the first time, passing through may be an unusual experience, but it is a common traffic connection to Zavala and Ivan Dolac.
The road after the tunnel is paved, but in some parts narrow and winding, requiring careful driving, especially in summer when there are more cars.
In Ivan Dolac itself, the roads are also narrow, and parking options vary depending on the part of the settlement and the accommodation facility. Many apartments and holiday homes have their own parking spaces, which is a significant advantage during July and August. Near the main beach, parking is more limited, so it is best to arrange a parking spot in advance with your host.
To reach Hvar by car, the most practical ferry line is Split – Stari Grad, and Ivan Dolac is located approximately 17 km from Stari Grad. It is also possible to arrive via Sućuraj on the eastern part of the island, but from there the drive is significantly longer.
Ivan Dolac is particularly a good choice for families with children, couples, and guests who want to spend their vacation close to the sea without the need for daily drives to the beach.
The majority of the accommodation options consist of private apartments, holiday homes, and villas, many of which have balconies or terraces with sea views. Some properties are located right by the coast, while others are situated on elevated parts of the settlement, among pines and vineyards.
When choosing an apartment, it is important to pay attention to the actual distance from the beach, as well as the elevation difference. Accommodation that appears very close to the sea on the map may require a return uphill, which is particularly important for families with small children or guests with limited mobility.
There is a shop for basic daily needs in the settlement, and for larger purchases and a wider selection of services, it is most practical to go to Jelsa.
Ivan Dolac is not the best choice for those expecting large nightclubs, daily entertainment programs, and a rich urban offer. Its advantage lies in a different rhythm: morning swimming, relaxing in the shade, a light dinner, a glass of local wine, and peaceful evenings by the sea.
