Milna Vis – Sandy Beaches, Zaglav, Budikovac and Local Guide

Milna on the island of Vis is a small coastal settlement located on the southeastern side of the island, known for its sandy beach, long shallow waters, and a quieter holiday experience just a few kilometers from the town of Vis. Although it does not have a large promenade, many restaurants, or evening bustle, Milna offers something that is quite rare on Vis – sandy beaches almost at your doorstep, easy access by car, and several beautiful excursions that start practically from the bay.

From here, you can walk to Zaglav, take a boat to Budikovac and the Blue Lagoon, and nearby are Brgujac, Stončica, Rukavac, and several other coves along the southeastern coast. The town of Vis is close enough for shopping, dining, or catching a ferry, but upon returning to Milna, you quickly feel the tranquility of a small island settlement again.

Milna is therefore not a place for guests who prioritize having ten bars within a few minutes' walk. It is much more suitable for those who want to step out of their apartment in the morning and quickly be in the sea, provide children with a large sandy shallow area, and spend the day between the beach, a short boat ride, and dinner by the sea.

Where is Milna located on Vis?

Milna is situated in the central part of the southeastern coast of the island of Vis, approximately ten kilometers by road from the town of Vis.

It is located in the bay of the same name, between the area of Stončica on one side and Zaglav, Brgujac, and Rukavac on the other. In front of the coast lies a small archipelago of islets and rocks, among which the most famous are Budikovac and Ravnik.

There are two roads leading to Milna. The older route comes via Podstražje, while the other access is through the area of Stončica. This makes it easy to include Milna in a tour of the entire eastern and southeastern part of the island.

The official Tourist Board of Vis describes Milna as the first known summer resort on Vis, which is interesting because today it appears very unassuming and much quieter than the main tourist centers on the island.

From Fishing Cove to the First Summer Resort on Vis

Milna did not develop around modern apartments.

Before tourism, there was a small fishing port here, and the area above the sea was strongly connected to viticulture, particularly the Plavac Mali grape. Vineyards once stretched across the entire valley from Podstražje almost to the sandy shore.

In the early 20th century, the first summer houses were built in Milna. It was these holiday homes that made Milna the first known resort on Vis, long before the current development of private accommodation.

By the late 1960s, the fishing port and surrounding houses gradually expanded into a weekend settlement. A similar development occurred in the neighboring Brgujac, and somewhat later, Ženka emerged along the coast.

This older story is still felt in Milna. Alongside newer apartments, old houses, a small port, and a relationship with the sea that is much closer to a fishing hamlet than a classic tourist resort remain.

Milna Beach – Sand and One of the Largest Shallow Areas on Vis

The main Milna Beach is located at the bottom of the bay and is one of the few true sandy beaches on Vis.

What sets it apart is not just the sand but the very long shallow area. The water reaches knee-deep approximately 30 meters from the shore, providing children with ample space to play, and the conditions are excellent for picigin or other ball games.

For this reason, Milna Beach is one of the most practical family beaches on the island.

There are no large pebbles to walk over, the depth does not start immediately at the shore, and you can drive very close to the water. This is a significant difference compared to many well-known Vis beaches that require walking or descending steeper paths.

The main drawback is the lack of significant natural shade until later in the afternoon. During the season, sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented, but for a full day stay, it is advisable to have your own sun protection.

The beach is particularly pleasant in the morning. The sun rises early, the sea is often calm, and before the daily influx of bathers, the entire bay has a completely different feel than in the middle of August at noon.

Zaglav – One of the Most Beautiful Sandy Beaches on Vis

One of the greatest advantages of staying in Milna is the fact that you can reach Zaglav Beach without a car.

There is a coastal walking path from Milna, and it takes about 15 minutes to walk. The path is not demanding but is quite exposed to the sun, which is quite noticeable in July and August.

Zaglav is a larger and more natural sandy beach than Milna. The sand is very light, the seabed is shallow, and the entire bay does not have a road immediately behind the shore.

This is a good choice when you want a greater sense of seclusion without serious adventure in accessing it.

In the main part of Zaglav, there is not much natural shade. Later in the afternoon, the beach gradually enters the shade, while during the hottest part of the day, shade is mainly sought at the catering facility.

If staying in Milna for several days, there is almost no reason to choose between these two beaches. Milna is more practical for daily swimming, while Zaglav is more beautiful for a stroll and spending a few hours in a more natural bay.

Budikovac and the Blue Lagoon – An Excursion Starting Practically from Milna

When looking out to sea from the shore of Milna, a series of small islets and rocks are located off the southeastern side of Vis. Among them, the most famous is Budikovac, or Veli Budihovac, with the well-known Blue Lagoon.

For guests of Milna, this is not a distant all-day excursion. Budikovac is close enough that during the summer, you can reach it by small local boat or taxi boat, swim in the lagoon, and return to Milna without losing the entire day.

The Blue Lagoon is known for its very shallow, extremely clear turquoise waters and light seabed. The islets and rocks around the lagoon further protect it from the open sea, and Budikovac has two natural beaches.

For swimming, it is one of the most attractive spots in the entire Vis archipelago. The water is also ideal for snorkeling, especially along the rocky edges of the lagoon.

During July and August, however, you should expect excursion boats. If you can choose the timing of private transport, early morning or late afternoon provides a much calmer experience.

Ravnik and the Green Cave

Another natural excursion from Milna leads to the islet of Ravnik and the Green Cave.

The official Tourist Board of Vis explicitly mentions Milna as one of the places from which local boats can depart to the Green Cave.

Ravnik is an uninhabited islet, and the Green Cave is located on its coast. Sunlight falls through an opening in the ceiling, creating a characteristic green reflection in the water.

When conditions are good, swimming in the cave is also possible.

If taking a private boat, a very natural combination is Milna – Ravnik and the Green Cave – Budikovac and the Blue Lagoon. The two attractions are close enough to each other that there is no need to organize separate all-day tours.

Brgujac – The Old Fishing Neighborhood of Milna

West of Milna is Brgujac, which in older and local forms is often referred to as Bargujac.

This is an old fishing settlement on a small peninsula, and the official Tourist Board of Vis emphasizes that despite the development of weekend homes since the 1970s, it has retained a lot of its original character.

Brgujac does not have the tourist infrastructure that would make it a place to spend the whole day, but it is interesting for a short visit, swimming at the small beach, or a walk.

From this part of the coast, there is also an old walking path to Zaglav.

If staying in Milna for a longer period, such small places are a good way to explore the southeastern coast beyond a few of the most well-known beaches.

Where to Eat in Milna?

Milna does not have a large selection of restaurants, and this should be noted before booking accommodation. However, for such a small place, a few options adequately cover what most guests need.

Dida Luka is a small family restaurant just a few steps from the sea. It is more suited for a planned dinner with fresh fish and daily specials than for a quick tourist lunch. Due to the limited number of tables and the way it operates, reservations are very helpful, especially if you want peka or a specific dish.

Restaurant and Caffe Bar Milna has a different character. It is more practical for coffee, breakfast, lunch after the beach, or a simpler dinner. Due to its all-day operation, it is well-suited for families and guests staying in Milna itself.

At Zaglav, there is Konoba Zoglov, which can be reached on foot from Milna. It makes the most sense for lunch during a day spent at the beach.

For a significantly larger selection of restaurants, taverns, cafes, and evening strolls, the most practical option is to go to the town of Vis.

Accommodation – For Those Who Want the Sea in Front of Their Place

Accommodation in Milna mainly consists of apartments, holiday homes, old summer houses, and former weekend homes.

This is not a place with large hotel complexes.

When choosing an apartment, it is worth checking the actual location on the map. Milna stretches along the coast and on the slopes, so two accommodations advertised as "Milna" can have completely different proximity to the beach.

If arriving by car, it is very important to check if the accommodation has its own parking.

For families with small children, the best position is near the main sandy beach. Those seeking more peace can choose a house a bit further from the central part of the bay.

How to Get to Milna from the Town of Vis?

Most guests arrive on the island of Vis by ferry or catamaran to the town of Vis.

From the ferry port to Milna, it is approximately ten kilometers by road. The most practical way to get there is by car, scooter, or taxi.

If bringing a car from the mainland, it needs to be loaded onto the ferry in Split. A scooter is also very practical for Milna as it is easier to park and sufficient for most excursions around the eastern part of the island.

Milna currently does not have a regular local bus connection that tourists can reliably rely on. The official seasonal timetable for 2026 has been published for the line Vis – Komiža – Vis, so for a stay in Milna, having your own vehicle or taxi is much more practical.

Parking in Milna

Milna does not have one large central parking lot like larger tourist resorts.

Vehicles are generally left along the local road, in available spots near the beach, or in the private parking of accommodations. Near Milna Beach, it is possible to park very close to the water, which gives it a significant advantage over Zaglav.

During July and August, the most sought-after spots by the sea fill up earlier in the day.

If staying in Milna, having your own parking space with the apartment is therefore a detail worth checking before making a reservation.

Walking to Milna – The Old Path from the Town of Vis

Milna can also be reached on foot.

The marked route Vis – Kut – Čunkovica – Tiho Braće Polje – Uvala Milna takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and covers about 180 meters of ascent and descent.

The path passes through a completely different Vis than what is seen from the coastal road – fields, old paths, and areas that once connected the town with vineyards and smaller settlements.

This is not a route I would recommend in the middle of August at noon, but in spring, early autumn, or during cooler summer mornings, it is a very interesting way to reach the sea.

Milna Without a Car – Possible, but Not Ideal

If the entire holiday is planned to be spent between the apartment, Milna Beach, and Zaglav, a car is not necessary.

The beach is in the village, Zaglav is a 15-minute walk away, and boat excursions to Budikovac and Ravnik can be organized from the Milna area itself.

The problem arises when wanting to regularly go to the town of Vis, visit Komiža, Stiniva, Rukavac, Stončica, or the interior of the island.

Due to the lack of a regular bus connection, one quickly becomes dependent on taxis.

For a longer stay on Vis, therefore, a car or scooter is significantly more practical.

What is Near Milna?

The location of Milna is particularly good for exploring the southeastern side of Vis.

To the northeast is Stončica, a long bay with a sandy beach, a tavern, and a large lighthouse at the cape.

To the west are Brgujac and Zaglav, and a bit further Rukavac, Srebrna, and Tepluš.

From the sea, the most important are Budikovac with the Blue Lagoon and Ravnik with the Green Cave.

For this reason, a very large number of the best swimming spots and natural attractions on the eastern side of Vis can be visited from Milna without long daily drives.

Milna or Rukavac?

These two places are often compared as they are both on the southeastern side of the island.

Milna is a better choice if sand, a large shallow area, and proximity to Zaglav are priorities.

Rukavac has a greater variety of beaches – Srebrna, Tepluš, Mala Srebrna, and Ruda – and somewhat more scattered accommodation.

Both places are quiet and rely on the town of Vis for a more serious evening offer.

For a family with very small children, Milna has a particular advantage due to its sandy bottom and extremely shallow sea.

Milna or the Town of Vis?

Here, the choice is much simpler.

The town of Vis is better if restaurants, cafes, shops, evening strolls, ferry port, and the ability to function without a car are important.

Milna is better if the priority is peace, a sandy beach at your doorstep, and staying by the sea.

The distance from Milna to the town is not far, so many guests choose this combination: sleeping and swimming in Milna, with occasional dinners and walks in Vis.

Who is Milna the Best Choice For?

Milna is particularly well-suited for families with children.

The sand and long shallow area are much more practical than large pebbles, there is no serious walking to the main beach, and Zaglav offers another excellent sandy option without the need for driving.

It is also good for couples seeking a quieter accommodation by the sea, who do not mind driving to dinner or excursions.

For sailors and guests who enjoy boat trips, the location opposite Budikovac and the proximity to Ravnik is interesting.

It will be less suitable for guests expecting a lively promenade, nightlife, shopping, or a wide selection of restaurants within walking distance.

Milna simply is not that kind of place – and that is a big part of its appeal.

When is the Best Time to Visit Milna?

July and August provide the most summer energy, seasonal activities are in operation, and there are the most opportunities for boat excursions. At the same time, it is the hottest, parking is more sought after, and Zaglav and Budikovac have the most visitors.

June and September may be even better for Milna. The sea is suitable for swimming, there is more space on the beaches, and the walking path to Zaglav is much more pleasant.

Spring and early autumn are good for hiking, visiting old villages, and exploring southeastern Vis without the summer heat.

Milna is a Small Place in a Very Good Location

Milna does not have a monumental church, a large old town, or a tourist attraction that draws in buses.

Its value is much simpler.

It has a sandy beach with a huge shallow area, Zaglav is about a fifteen-minute walk away, Budikovac and the Blue Lagoon are almost at the doorstep, and Ravnik and the Green Cave are also accessible by a short boat trip.

Additionally, there remains a small fishing port, old summer houses, the story of Plavac Mali, and the fact that Milna was the first known summer resort on Vis.

All of this makes it a very good base for guests who do not seek much activity around them but want the sea and good beaches to be the most important part of their holiday.

Milna is close enough to the town of Vis that nothing is truly far away, but quiet enough to feel the rhythm of a small island cove again in the evening after the daily bathers have left.
