Jakšić Family Gallery in Donji Humac | A Fusion of Brač Stone, Sculpture, and Contemporary Art

The Jakšić Gallery is located in Donji Humac, within the old family house and stone masonry workshop of the Jakšić family, who have been working with Brač stone since 1903. The gallery opened in 2008 on the very site where master Lovre Jakšić once worked, and the entire space now resembles a blend of an artistic studio, gallery, and traditional Brač workshop.

Unlike typical galleries found in city centres, here art is literally surrounded by tools, stone blocks, and workspaces where artists create daily. During a visit, one can often see sculptures in progress, open studios, and large pieces of Brač stone being transformed into sculptures, tables, jewellery, and various designer items.

The gallery showcases works by several members of the Jakšić family. Notably, the stone sculptures by academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić stand out, alongside paintings and sculptures by Dina Jakšić Pavasović, and handmade silver jewellery featuring semi-precious stones crafted by Ida Stipčić Jakšić. In addition to artistic works, visitors can also view stone tables, interior details, and functional items made from Brač stone.

The entire space effectively illustrates the significance of stone in the life of inland Brač. The walls, courtyard, stairs, and exhibition areas are constructed from various types of Brač stone, making the gallery itself feel like part of the exhibition. It is particularly interesting to see how modern art is combined with traditional stone masonry, a craft that has been passed down through generations on Brač.

The gallery is situated along the main road through Donji Humac, making it easily accessible by car. Parking is available next to the building and along the road through the village. During the summer, the gallery is frequently visited by people who combine their visit with lunch at Konoba Kopačina or exploring the interior of Brač.

Visitor comments often mention that the space feels more like an open artistic house than a tourist attraction, precisely because the artists' work can be observed up close. The large stone courtyard and sculptures arranged among olive trees and ancient stone walls leave a lasting impression.
